wo write only of thoso whom wo knew until they were gathered to their fathers There was Colonel Thomas P Hill a great lawyer and an orator whose fame was almost national He was tho nester ot tho bar and many a young man who afterwards became legalloroyears of age maintaining his vigor Otis mind even If the body had grown weak and feeble Then thoro war Colonel William Gatewood Welch a man of massive physique as well as of robust mental qualities Wo have often thought that the two greatest minds wo have overcome In close contact with were those of Colonel W C P Brcckfnridgo and Colonel Welch Toe dllference was that tho former had a laudable ambl lion the latter seemed to care noth tag for tho favors of the plaudits of then The one added to the talents the Lord had given him the other In a measure burled his lie was as gallant a soldier as ever drew a sword for tho Sunny Southland and as brave a man is over lived but he lacked atu bUlon and few knew the strength of his mind federate veterans except Colonel Hill who was too old for service and Judge Warren perhaps too young and como from the war as poor as Jobs Turkey as the saying Is shows tho wonderful recuperation of Howard of Lincoln county and sold them in Harrodsburg on April court day will escape the penalty of his crime because Governor Willson will not Issue a requisition for his return to the scene ot his misdoings Says the Harrodsburg Herald Gross hired the turnout from Howard drove to liar rodsburg and sold the horse on the street to the highest bidder Ed Rutherford of Jessamine county bocom ing the Office at Sta lord Kyi as Second Class malL JUDGE SAUFLEY Words fall us when we seek to pay a tribute of love and respect to the memory of our kinsman Judge M C Saufley who was taKen so unexpect cdly last week A first cousin of our grandfather we looked upon him at the titular head of the name and rev erenced him as the patriarch of our family clan in addition to other reasons suggested by his most eminent abilities and attainments- It were hardly possible to pay him a more beautiful or truer tribute than was said in Saturdays Lexington Herald by our dear friend Col W P Walton former editor of this pa per and who knew the deceased Intimately for over a quarter ora ccn lineNotrover of the south who went to war for the lost cause is passing away Every days dlspatcnes tell of tht deaths of those who have crossed the river to rest with Jackson under the shade of the trees and soon there will be none to tell the tale of the hardships and the trials of those who were brave In war and have proved as worthy of praise after its close in everything that pertains to civic duty It is sad to think how rapidly passingsI of selfsacrifice and devotion to duty will be a heritage more precious than r rubles to those they leave behind These thoughts were revived yester day by the news of the sudden death of Judge MIcah Chrisman Saufley of Stanford one of the noblest Ilomans of them all Our columns tell the tfid etory It is our pleasure to add a word of praise of him who was faithful In every demand of a long and useful life and who in greatness grew as the years thickened over him Oh the writer knew him for thus ty years or more and can truly say that no braver man truer friend or juster judge ever lived than MIL Saufley as he was affection known by the people of his section who delighted to honor him and great lathe grief occasioned by his loss Although nearly three score ar ten he was a well preserved man and It was hoped and believed when he was elected for the third term as circuit judge of his district last No- vembert that be would live through t the term to dispense justice for which his court was always notable But man proposes and God disposes and today the body of this really great man will be placed by loving Iriendfl beneath the sod of the Kentucky that lie loved so well while tars of deepest sorrow will fill every eye When Judge SauHey ran for ap pellate judge in his district In 1904 we wrote to him for a picture and sketch of himself He had no picture t and said with reference to the sketch l There Is but little to say I only f want to emphasize that I am of Vir r ginia blood In every ancestral line- t t and chiefly that 1 was born and rear ed In the mountains of Wayne county Kentucky These facts are my on ly stock in trade He then went r to say that in the summer of 18G1 he entered the Confederate army as as private In a company recruited In Wayne county under many difficulties i and some perils with his elder brother and Shelby Coffey both t whom were killed very soon and In I j the first engagement they were in as soldiers with General Wolfords cavalry At first Judge Saufley was In the In fantry under General Zolllcoffer and then under General John C Breckln ridge with the first in battle at Fish ing Creek and the latter at Shiloh and wasliferred to j Morgans cavalry was captured on the Ohio raid and put in the Allegheny Pa penitentiary He Wild chased before the close of the and was In Virginia at Lees warI filer After an absence of three and ten months he returned to his home In Wayno county Of the delightful romance that the t war brought about for him let the Judges own words tell in his humor our way I was treated with great kindness while sick in Tennessee at home of Major Rowan an old lawyer of Mur rreesboro death of his son George BI Saulley a bright young lawyer who was following in his fathers footsteps and the blow nearly crushed him Six children survive the Judge In ad ditlon to one of the loveliest and truest wives that ever blessed a mar with her love and devotion The chll dren are Rowan Snufley Mrs Shop perd Webb and Mrs S M Logan Mrs Geo L Penny James Sauflej and Lieutenant Saufley of the
