have been destroyed by tha recent heavy rains oth firs have been so damaged that their crops will not exceed one third ot the average crop while others will not get more than one half yield Many ot I am far from being a prosperous farmer but hope to pros per at least enough to pay all my de liteWheatthj hum of the thresher Is now heard In the land A great many of the thousands of men who came to asto assist in harvpisng he vtaat scrop have gone yet a greatI tnafty are still here helping to run tarnworkIt la estimated that about 30000 juen came to Kansas this year They began coming about three weeks be tore harvest began Every train hothpassngdr and freight brought harvest hands They were here from everywhere A great many farmers employed their hands and boarded them free several days before tho cheat wits ready In order to be sure cftheni Iwilf say right here tnat If the farmers had to harvest the cropa without any outside help Iota of It would go to waste 260 to 3 and board was the price paid man to pitch wheat and 3 to I for stackers and 3460 to 15 for man and teams All other work was dropped and every flan who could do a days work was In harvest Harvest lasts put 10 to 15 acre Is the best yield reported Ot what that tested 64 pounds from black land It U selling now at 88 cents The Ag ricultural Commissioner claims the crop in Kansas will be about 40 to 65 million bushels or about 25 million less than last year Corn Is looking fairly well but wax beginning to suffer for rain but Saturday the 9th night we had a nice shower that will do lots of good Oft in claimed that there la the largest acreage planted In corn that has rover been planted in Kansas The second crop of alfalfa has been cut and Is a fairly good yield Yet If we dont get more rain soon the third crop Is going to be short and I want to say that the alfalfa crop In Itself In an Immense crop Kansas raises wore alfalfa than any other State In the nlonlt seems to me that It the farmers of old Kentucky would give alfalfa more attention they would be better off The price of land Is climbing skyward pretty fast here Mr Harvey Tubba obught a tract of land near Tu rOQa few days ago with the 1m provements paid 100 per acre Mr Hardln Newell bought a tract five miles north of Neonla with the build ings both these men are from Pu laskl county anti doing well Our old friend H Bruce Newell and estimable wife spent the day with ua yesterday and he told me that he was offered 114000 last week for 160 acres that he bought for 6500 Just five years ago He has 160 acres of wheat that ho thinks will make above 25 bushels If the weather is favorable he will put 200 acres in wheat this fall Just as soon as it rains enough to put land in shape farmers will be very busy listing wheafland Now quite a few are cultivating their corn again since harvest Tworow culti vators are coming Intu use fast Most all the new ones bought this year arefhe tt row kind Made espe cially for listed corn They could not be used on surface planted corn and quite afow tworow listers were put out this year They are operated with one man and eight horses A new railroad Is being graded the south side of this county It will run from Wichita to Denver Col They begin grading at Turon June 16 It will ba a great benefit to a line wheat and alfalfa territory west Only a few years ago It was thought that wheat would not grow In the I western part of the State owing tc lack of moisture But this year tlui crop Is as good as If not better than mere Consequently land In Western Kansas has gone from a or 10 per- alre to 40 or 150 and even higher Before closing I must say a few words about alfalfa When we left Kentucky we thought we were going to a land of strangers With a very few exceptions where there was little sociability and everyone too busy chasing dollars to notice- D stranger but we were agreeably surprised to Shad that about half of the people in this locality are from old Kentucky and that the people areas plain friendly and an good neigh bore in every way as can be round anywhere If you meet any one hero who Is thirty years old you can ask them from what State they came tor they are from back east and th chances are that they are Irom Ken lucky Missouri or Indiana but more are from Kentucky There Is less crime here than In dear did Kentucky by odds There has not been a mur der In
