whipping of their lives in a game play ed on Lancasters own grounds Friday J afternoon and won their IRth straight victory The final scoru was 16 to 3 or and the score eloquently tells the tale of the difference between the two nines The Lancaster boys are coming here next Friday however and will havep several new men and promise to make a great effort for revenge The Stanford players so far outclassed their rivals that a complete story of of the game would fill a volume All of the Stanford players had their batting eyes with them They slaughtered Her ron for four innings piling up a estimation if the Democrats of Kentucky are desirous of enjoying four more years of Republican rule in the state after the administra tion headed by Gov Willson is end ed they can insure it in no more if you had had the opportunity as we had to meet Democrats from all over the state at Frankfort during the recent legisla tive session and to heard the views of a great majority of them regarding Democracys next candid ate for Governor we believe that you would see where we are right In the first place the vast majority cf the Democrats of Kentucky the country Democrats who ar Democrats from principle and no from hopes of political pelf as is the case in many of the larger cit iesnre not to accept with open arms candidate for governor whose chief source of support is notorious boss from the Buckin ham Theatre in Louisville ColJn H Whallen The country democrats will doubt the sincerity and intentions of any man who is known as Whallens candidate Many will in deed doubt the brand of his demo racy for it is known to the world that Whallen contributed 250 to the Taft campaign fund in 1008 and- has Bryan from first to last A man who can po easily change his political cloak is hardly the onto name the candidate of a party atd especially when such a boss rarely warmly espouses th cause of any candidate who is no entirely subservient to his mastermind Ben Johnsons alliance with Whallen and his crowd would cost him thousands of votes in the rural districts The support of Whallen may be necessary to carry Louisville but this is not going to be the sole consideration in the nomination of the democratic candidate for gov ernor The country democracy js not going to permit Whallen to name the candidate as the price of his support of the ticket Whallen may bolt if Snot given his own sweet willthe Louisville brand of dem ocracy frequently does thatbut with a man at the head of theticket upon whom the united party out in- the state has put the seal of itsap proval it really makes little differ ence how Whallen feels about it And right here it may be said that tine part Ben Johnson played in alliance with the other henchmen- of Whallen in rafting the notorious i gag rules in the Kentucky Sen ate does not count in his favor 4 Johnson was in the private councils of the leaders who wrQte those rules and suggested immrfantparts in them rules were more odious to foyers Qrfair play than the ironclad rulesof Cannon How Mr Johnson could reconcile his position against the rules of Cannon in the National Houses and his suggestions in the drafting of the rules of the I Kentucky Senate would be rather hard to explains to the democrats of Kentucky it strikes us Again It has been said time and again that one of the causes that lent toward democratic disaster in the last state campaign was the lack of and aggressiveness of Judge Hager as a stump speaker and his failure as q mixer We spea plainly But the truth of this Johnsodoesstump speakerand further is as crowdHfI theboystong grand old democratic party He would not meet Judge ORear on the stump It would be a farce from beginning to end We can get a candidate who is a speaker we must rabble them so whats the use of going feeling to and nave Learned better by this time There are other reasons why Mr u ojTJohnsonis certainlynot Ipgical goveynoWehave cerning him of which we know little and many which we do not be lieve should be held against any man who honorably seeks the suf dontrbeen compelled to take human life in his pyvr Defense or xindei circum stances him in the right should cut any figure when Iris candidacy for office is consider ed But there is no gainsaying the fact that it does sometimes We do not believe it fair or just that the religious belief of any man should be even remotely considered when Ills candidacy for political office is suggested The Church and the fce kept inviolably sep orate In this connection we do net offer our own opinion in the matter but will quote one of the foremost citizens of Frankfort and one ofour warmest personal friends and he is a devout member of the Catholic church He said to us I know you feel as I do about it that a mans religious views should not be thought of in politics but I Ieknow that there a great many men in the state who would not vote for Ben Johnson because he is a Cotho lie I am a Catholic myself yet I know this to be true and I believe that for this reason alone if no oth era were to be considered it would be very unwise for the democratic party to nominate him for governor Its a pity that everyone is not broad minded enough to see the injustice of this but they do not seem to be And we agree exactly with what our friend this leading Catholic citi zen of Frankfort has to say on this- t question
