Option Election in Danville May Follow Ruling of Judge Sauf Icy In Bunk Raum Case In accordance withthe county unit local option law now upon tho statute books of Kentucky Judge M C Saut Icy at Danville Friday held that the city council of Danville has a right to grant license to sell liquor in that city if It so chooses Judge Saufley render ed the decision in the case of Bunk lUura the noted colored blind tiger op erator who was before the court charged with violating the local option law In 33 cell The judge held he could be fined under the city ordinance but could not bo Imprisoned as the state option law could not be construed to cover his case- In 1890 Danvillo voted dry but no option election has been held there since Tho county unit law of 1906 which exempted fourth clan cities from a vote with the whole county repealed the old option law and as Danville has not vot ed upon the local option question under the present law no charge of Its viola tion could I entrance to the Congressional primary I set for April 30th to announce Mr Preacher a Night Rider Federal Court Hands Out Heavy Fines to Eight Men Eight of the alleged night riders of Grant county on trial in the Federal court at Covington were found guilty Saturday and three were acquitted Fines ranging from 100 to 1000 were assessed against the guilty parties by Judge Cochran who released the men on their own recognizance pending an appeal to higher courts The top fine of 1000 was inflicted upon Rev John S Steers a member of the Legislature from Grant county Perry Simpson A C Webb and Jere Carter were fined 500 each Frank K Conrad H L Conrad and R Lee Conrad were fined 1300 each John Cald well was fined 100 The men acquit ted were Marlon Bennett John Callen der and Isaac N Conrad Tho jury was out about three hours The charge by the judge was such that a conviction at least of some of the men on trial was generally predicted Crime to Give it Away Jim Tall Got In Bad All Around For banks as a result of the heavy rains of the past week Bud Rowe a negro farmer tried to cross Hanging Fork at the ford near the old Dawson mill and his horse and buggy were swept away He barely escaped situation in Stanford but whatever the state of I case we would advise the city council to go mighty slow in taking any action which might force the East Tennessee Telephone Co to cease furnishing its service to the people of this city and community In the first place I all the old subscribers to its service are t Retting advantage of the 2 and 1 rate and we are informed that fully two thirds of the subscribers have this rate Practically every city in the state the size of Stanford and a great many larg er have the 275 and 165 rate where the East Tennessee service is used Other telephone systems can undoubt be secured at a slightly smaller frate but the character of service and area of territory which can be covered should be considered We have had ex periencejwith both the East Tennessee service and the Independent or Home Telephone service and we say frank I I ly that where we have seen both inuse there was no comparison between the two the East Tennessee being so much the superior Harrodsburg is said to have learned a lesson which should prove valuable here Those subscribers who are now paying tolls at 2 and 1 will certainly not appreciate any change of conditions which would force them to pay higher Wo believe that 1 the city fathers will do what they be lieve to be for the best interests of theI city in this matter but wonld caution them to go slow Be sure of
