aged 68 years a life long resident of Lincoln county died at his home in this city of Brights disease late Wednesday evening after a lengthy illness The funeral will tako place at Goshen Friday wife and a family of grown children and leaves many warm friends who will mourn that ho Is no more BITTEN BY BULLDOG Bohon Campbell Attacked by Vi cious Canine and Hurt Twice Bohon Campbell proprietor of a grocery store on Main street was bit ten on the right side and on the left arm by a large whIte bulldog belonging to Blcdsoe Bailey today The dog was taken out and Instantly killed by Mr Balloy It is not believed that it was affected with rabies so no uneasiness is felt regarding Mr Campbells Injuries Mr Campbell was sprinkling the street with a small hose In front of his store and as he stooped over to shut off the water the dog which was standing near sprang at his throat Ho dodged and the fangs of the canine sank Into the muscles on bs right side Tho animal snapped again as the man sprang away and caught him on the left arm Mr Bailey rushed up and made him desist and he was killed A physician exam ined the bites and pronounced them not serious Three Killed In Disastrous Freight Wreck In Madison County Three men were killed and four In jured In a collision between two freight trains at Maybee 10 miles from Richmond on the Kentucky Central divis ion of the L N early Tuesday morn tag One of the injured will die and three others were badly hurt The dead are George Devore fireman Richmond Russell Storm brakeman Paria Arthur Sanford engineer Richmond The injured are James Rourke fire man Paris fatally scalded James McCarty fireman Paris badly burned and scalded Harvey Justice track man Corbin burned about the face The collision occurred on a sharp curve at a little way station called Maybee just a short distance from White Sta tloe According to the story of tha wreck sent out train No 76 north bound should have waited at Berea for train No 913 southbound It was allowed to pass Bcrea however and as soon as the operator at that place real ized the mistake he at once telegraphed to Richmond and ordered out the wrecker knowing that a collision would be t r GRAND MASTER VISITS LOCAL ODD FELLOWS Tells of Great Work ofOrder And Is Well Pleased With Interest Shown Here Grand Master 1 N Williams of the Lodge of Odd Fellows of Kentucky visited Stanford Lodge No 156 at its regular session Tuesday evening and his visit was made a notable occasion In this popular local order About 75 members turned out to welcome him and to prove to him the live interest which is taken In the lodge by the mem bershlp Several members of the Lan caster lodge were also present to greet tho Grand Master and he was visibly Impressed by the cordiality of the wel come and the splendid showing made by the lodges in this part of the State Mr J C McClary introduced the Grand Master to tho lodge In a few well chosen words Mr Williams then told the Odd Fellows of the splendid work which the order is doing Ho dwelt particularly upon the excellent results accomplished at the Homo for Widows and Orphans at Lexington lie said there were at present 125 orphan children being given good homes and an education under tho care of the order With the addition to the homo which is now under way the order will be pro pared to taker care of still more of the dependent ones of its brothers who have gone on before Prof J W Ireland responded to tho Grand Master on behalf of the local lodge and warmly expressed the inter est which Stanford members feel in the work which the order as a whole is accomplishing Rev F M Tinder of Lancaster lodge also spoke and R L Tomlinson of Lancaster had a few happy things to say which contributed to tho enjoyment of the ORGANIZED I Young Business And Professional Men Want to Help Boost Stanford A number of tho younger men of Stanford both business and professional men lire seriously discussing tho or ganization of a commercial club hereto advertise both Stanford and Lincoln county also better to the State and country The matter has been quietly talked of for several days and has now reached a point where a call will probably be issued signed by a number of active young men for a mass meeting of all those who are willing to join in a concerted effort to boost the old town and community in an organized way- Commercial clubs are doing good work in a number of smaller cities in Ken tucky and those who have watched some of the results they have attained say that there is no valid reason that can be given why Stanford should not have one to push forward to the front of the procession There are a number of good things and much needed Improvements which could undoubtedly be secured by con certed effort II said a wellknown bus iness man to the INTERIOR JOURNAL All we need Is for tome of the young fel lows who have energy and determina tion to go to the front in the matter Theres no use going after things too big at the start Aim at something that can be attained go to work for improvement of sanitary conditions in the city for a better sewerage system for a new depot or for better streets Every business man in town ought to feel a personal interest in such a move ment and be willing to help it all he canIt has been suggested that one of the first things that a commercial club could find to do would be to arrange a suitable and appropriate program for dedicatory ceremonies for the new court house An orator of note could easily be secured to make the address of ded ication The details of making such arrangements would naturally fall upon a commercial club and it has been sug gested that the affair could be mode a noteworthy event in the history of city and county with a little boosting of the right sort Rev L 0 Hobbs Will Assist in Protracted Meeting At Methodist Church Rev E 0 Hobbs who has been as elating Rev J J Dickey in the pro tracted meeting which has been in progress at Logans Creek for the past few weeks has been selected to assist Mr Dickey in the revival services which will be held at the Methodist church here beginning the first week in May Mr Hobbs ficials regarding freight rates on cattle Stanford is becoming one of the larg est cattle markets In tho State Mr Nunnelley has recently received ship ments fromdown in Tennessee a number of herds have come to his large stock yards from as far away as Russell and Whitley counties and other sections not adjacent to Stanford An average of over 500 cattle are handled here every court day while the busi ness in the interim has grown to large proportionsWith equitable rates from the railroads on freight shipments of cat tie Mr Nunnelley believes that Stan ford will soon take the lead in all this part of the State as a cattle market Buyers are flocking here from all over the South and Eastern houses have their representatives on hand The central location of the city and its ease of access makes It especially favora ble for doing the largest business In cattle in this part of the State Death At Highland Mrs Baugh mother of Elbert Baugh of the Highland section died at her home there Saturday aged 78 years She is survived by two children and a number of relatives She was a faithful member of the Methodist church and well beloved In the community Young Girl Dies In Garrard Miss Sallie Watkins died at the home of William Purr of the Flat Woods section of Garrard county after a long illness from consumption She had been a resident of Garrard for some time but was a native of the Big San dy border of the State and also leaves relatives in Johnson county She was a bright and energetic young girl just entering her 14th year The body was taken to Paintsville to be laid to rest in the locality where she had passed the happy hours of her childhood Distinguished Woman Dead Margaret Wickliffe Beckham one of the best known and most highly esteem ed women in Central Kentuckv died at her home in Shelbyville Monday night She was 66 years of age Mrs Beckham was of a distinguished ancestry Her grandfather Charles A Wickliffe was governor of Kentucky and also served as Postmaster General in President Tylers cabinet Tier lath er Robert C Wickliffe was governor of Louisiana and younger brother of hers who bears his fathers name is now one of the Congressmen from that takes great pleasure in paying this humble tribute to an official of the opposite faith who can truly step out of office with the encomium Well done thou good and faithful servant We have had the pleasure of watching Prof Crabbs work intimately during the past two years at Frankfort and if all public servants were as faithful to the people as he the old State would go forward by leaps and bounds Prof Crabbe does not carry his politics into the execution of his duty Ho rightly believes and practices that the schools should be out of politics This has bee one of the secrets of his success and the confidence In which he is held b those who are familiar with tb active steps taken in recent to give ed ucational work in Kentucky the promi nence which it should have To traffic in votes is a crime but secondary in degree to using the machinery of the courts for political purposes There is no penalty attached to the pur chase of a voters registration certifi cats even if there should be and consequently the act is not punishable However in order to intimidate both seller and buyer Judge Parker of Fay tte county permitted the grand jury which he kept in session a month or more preceding the last election ti indict a number of those charged with the alleged offense The object having been attained he now dismisses the in dictments on demurrer saying that i1 Is not punishable under the law Edit or Breckinridge who called the Court y P attention to the matter at the timer goes for Judge Parker in a recent edit orial in the Herald which must make the head of the fusion ticket at Lex ington feel that honesty Js the best pol icy and there are dearer consideration In life than the acquisition of office though men of Judge Parkers calibn do not seem to think so IN rejoicing over the summary spik lag of the republican Cannon there is another thing connected with it everI more worthy of genuine gratification It is that the democrats in Congress presented a
