Tuesdays IMUO ills brilliancy his success In his every undertaking 4 his companionable disposition all drew people to him and their admiration for him was great He was one of those big brained broad minded scholarly young men who impressed those who camo in contact with him as did Saul of Tarsus of old Ho was ripe In wis dour though young in years and had ho lived tq maturer manhood we believe he would have reached tho topmost ruog of tho ladder of fame As a lawyer Mr Saufley was at the head of his profession A fine Interrogator able in argument and a thorough fundamental pearIgreatly sought and his practice wasI probably as lucrative as that of any IKonr izen ho was among tho beet HIs tak- eling away is a blow not only to the aged father and mother brothers and sisters who almost Idolized him but to tho people of his town his county and his State as well Mr Saufley was born In Stanford on March 2nd 1882 and con + sequcntly became 23 years old a few Co days beforo his demise lie finished the public school course hero and then attended Centre College After a brief period in that institution of learn I ing fn which he at onco carried off the honors of his classes hieyes began to taU him and ho was compelled to leave in his sophomore year Ho sought the services of a Knoxville ecu list and was under his treatment In that city some three months He was ad wised to rest a been Informed that the paper was sold to Mr Shelton M Saufley February first but at his tYrequest I continued in control till hi could arrange his Frankfort affairs and fill his contracts with a number of news papers to furnlh them the Legislative proceedings The Legislature Is about to adjourn now and ho is free to take charge of his property which his large and varied newspaper experience in sures that he will manage with marked ability 1 could not have sold it to a better qualified man and the patrons of the paper may be sure that he will improve the high standard I tried to i maintainWorn by unremitting Idbor and 1broken in health I would not havet even under those circumstances sold the paper to a less competent man for it has been tho love of my youth and the pride of maturer years cherished almost with the affection one feels fort his offspring so I could not have agreed to Its declineEIn retiring from the paper I hope I 4will be excused for a little personal reminiscence In November 1881 after the death of my father and the conse I quent breaking up of our home and family ties I came to Stanford to live with my brother Mr W P Walton who had in 1875 bought the INTERIOR JOURNAL from the late F J Campbell who started it in 1872 A mere youth at that time I soon got the fascination of a printing office and learned to set type Afterwards I became repdrter and solicitor continuing In these posi tions until I bought the paper in 1900 Since then I have done the entire edito rial and reportorial work with scarcely any assistance in addition to soliciting and collecting and making a hand ands half in the printing department I have worked day and night to give the IN- TERiOR JOURNAL patrons a paper wor thy of their support and the liberal patronage that they have given it dur ing all these years assures me that I have not labored in vain The work however has proved too much for me and I retire broken in health and old before my time t I do not suppose any publisher ever personally knew as many of his sub scribers and patrons as I do or eve bad more pleasant relations with them It is therefore with the deepest regret that I say goodbye to them as a news paper man They have encouraged me with good words and helped me in a- 1material way to such an extent that I can never forgot or cease to love themOf my immediate neighbors and clos est friends I cannot speak too much or too affectionately Whey have stood by me through evil as well as good report f and I shall never cease to cherish them in memory as long as God shall give me life l My plans for the future are not fully 1aratured but go where I will Stanford 1willalways feel like home to me and no matter where my lot is cast I think of it as the dearest spot on earth r and of Its people as Gods chosen To them to my patrons every one and to the newspaper fraternity which has treated me so considerately and kindly I beg to express my gratitude and hope that they will always not in many years produced any young man whoso future seemed more brilliant in the learned chambers of the law nor one more fitted by nature to adorn every high position to which he might be called THE VETO AX FALLS Gov Willsonlswung veto ax for first timejthis session on the Klai bill providing ajheavy fine for anyone who may buy or solicit the sale of a pooled farm producLThis bill was aimed at those who endeavor to purchase pooled tobacco and the Executive pronounced it a very dangerous measure manifestly a deadly blow to the rights of the farmers to sell their pro ducta and the right of having purchasers compete to buy them The sentiment is greatly against the Governor however in both Houses and strongly- in favor ofanything that the tobacco societies desire IThe consequence was that the bill was passed over the Governors veto by both Houses- A SOP TO TUB GOVRRNOK The circuit judges of the State have had their salaries raised and he Gov ernor let it go through though he had written out his veto but then changer his mind as he does frequently Oi Tuesday the House passed the Senate bill increasing the salaries of the prison commissioners from 2600 a year to 3000iwith 600 additional for the chairmanof the board It has been ex pected that the Governor would surely get this one with his veto ax and as he has final power these last days there would be no recourse However a bill was offered in the Senate appropriating 3000 additional a yearfor contingent expenses of the Governors office This virtually means 3000 extra er year for the Governor As ho now ceives 6500 a year and tho use of t mansion if this sop which has been gettinrby with other large expenditures go through the Governorship is going be a pretty soft office after all question is will the Governor take the bait RULES COMMITTEE IT The Rules Committee of both are the whole things and all who hay bills that they want passed have kowtow to these august bodies before theres any use asking any other
