ai pastor of M E church this year Wo live in the town of Harlan In tho parsonage We havo a good church edifice besides two in the country and others that will be dedicated In the near future We have REPQRT ON PENITENTIARIES The longexpected report of State Examiner and Inspector M H Thatch er on his investigation of conditions at the State penitentiaries was made last week It proved the bursting of a big bubble Sensational charges had beenJ made by a former warden of prisoners conniving with contractors on the part of commissioners and mismanagement of affairs in general MrIThatcher says that he found there bten some irregularity under former ad ministrations but that the present administration of the prisons affairs had improved conditions wonderfully He says that the charges against officials of the penitentiaries were much exaggerated George Chinn the formerE warden who made the charges a splendid fellow in every way but his friends here say that he was inclined to be too lax withthe prisoners when he was at the helm and did not realize that the character of men who make up the convict population soon overleap all bounds and override all authority unless restrained with a vigorous hand and taught the force of discipline AndI nothing has proven as efficacious in ac complishing this as a goodly taste of the strap now and then The State I penitentiary cannot be run on Sunday school plans and good behavior cannot be secured with gam drops and pretty phrases As Thatcher is a republican and the three Prison Commissioners democrats the report can be regarded as turning would wrest the honor from him might as well take their medicine and save their trouble CANTRILL A GONER Over in this the Seventh district Congressman J Campbell Cantrill is seeking a renomination and making a great ado over his defense of the Ken tacky tobacco growers in Congress But the tobacco growers in this section are mighty doubtful of Cantrills sin cerity Tho Burley Tobacco Society is watching his trail carefully and he is going to have a fight before ho is outiThetried to beat them with his Equity So clety and when he found out they had him whipped he got in line again Can trill has been known here at Frankfort- as a lobbyist for tho whisky interests and the liquor interests are vory anx ions to keep him in the National Congress Two years ago Cantrill promis ed to support for Congress this time Senator Claude Thomas of Bourbon county if the latter desired to run Thomas has not made up his mind yet but Cantrill has already anpounced his own candidacy again There is some for a visit Boon- S M S THE action of the Eighth Congres lanai District Committee which met Nlcbolasvillo on the 3rd inst in adopting a resolution providing for a primary election as the best method of nominating a democratic candidate for Congress in this district exhibits sound judgment on the part of the committee Previous to the meeting of the committee every effort to persuade the committee to call convention had been exhausted but the committee decided the welfare of the party would be subserved by primary After the resolution providing for a primary had been adopted there was some difference among the committeemen as to the time of holding the primary the major- Ity of the members thinking it best to hold It at an early date in order to avoid the fastapproaching busy season among the farmers commencing with the seeding season and including the harvest period which extends well into fall as wellas to avoid complica tions with the State races that are rap- Idly pressing to the front Besides the time intervening between the date of the committee meeting last Thursday and the date fixed for the primary April 30 1910ls the same length of time prescribed by the committee for making the last nomination for Con grew In this df trict and is about the same length ofUime prescribed by the committees for making nominations in the three Congressionaldistricts where the nominations have already been made Theonly one who made an ef r + t 6 toil through his friesda to fateea the I committee to take a different view and I have it fix a time to suit his interests was Hon W Je Price of Boyle who Was candidate four years ago and who has been a prospective candidate eVer since and has been prosecuting his can didacy in the district with more or lees vigor all the while He alto undertook to convince the committee that a primary could be held in this district composed of 10 counties for 1600 when he well knows that the late judicial primary in the counties of Lincoln Boyle Garrard and Mercer cost 1200 Isis effort to control a proxy held by a member of the committee by long distance tele phone to a gentleman not a committeeman and who stated to tho committee that ho did not know the committee man to whom he talked over the phone was as untenable as the other positions taken by him before the committee In fact we judge from the reports we have seen and heard that his aim after he realized that ho was unable to secure a convention was to create confusion arid discord with a view if possible Of making some cheap campaign capital and this conclusion is strengthened by his absurd appeal to the State Central Committee Tho people want contests of this character over us soon as possi ble and we are of the opinion that tho action of the committee will give gen eral satisfaction EDITOR W B HANSFORD who has made the Somerset Republican a newsy and creditable paper for many years has retired leaving his son Mr E H Hansford a capable young newspaper SAUFLEY After an illness of some seven weeks Mr George B Saufleys soul took its flight to mansions above at 10 oclock yesterday morning That dread disease typhoid fever caused his demise Ho was tho
