the rear of the building about 1 oclock and was under headway when discovered William Bybee tho merchant and family were living In the rooms Just over the store Tho key to the front door had been left In tho rear of thoL store where the flames were tho thick eat Bybeo escaped by jumping from l the window of the second floor The loss was 15000 with 9000 Insurance The cause of the fire is unknown Tho following dispatch is sent from Frankfort Following an investigation E into tho affairs of the county officials of Garrard county M II Thatcher State Inspector and Examiner makes sen rational charges In a report which he filed with Gov Willson Ho has placed his report in the hands of the proper civil authorities and will attempt to prosecute certain officials In the crimi nal courts Important records in the clerks office In Garrard were burned and Mr Thatcher says that he roust conclude that these books and records were destroyed or abstracted with some criminal or unlawful Intent in view Mr Thatcher charges that A D Ford County Judge of Garrard not only drew money from the State as com mittee for two idiots In direct violation of the law which forbids m county Judge from acting as a com mittee for an Idiot but also drew money for an Idiot after the death of tho ward of the State The money alleged to have been Illegally drawn was paid back to the State by Judge Ford Alleged coming out for Judge M C Saufley of Stanford for governor If he can be induced to run he would be a certain winner and would reflect enduring credit upon the grand old Commonwealth In Judge Saufley as the democratic candidate for governor Judge ORear Or any other republican tbat could be named would find a foeman worthy of his steel To his qualities of a gallant soldier an able jurist a distinguished and success ful lawyer may be truthfully added that of an orator who can stir his audiences to unbounded enthusiasm by his eloquence and convince the thought ful by his logic If an old time democratic majority could ever again be rolled up in Kentucky Judge Saufle would be the proper man to select to lead the boys in the trenches to cer tain and overwhelming victory Advo cate As yet the Judge has given no public intimation of his attitude in connection with the gubernatorial fight but the frank and open character of the gentleman causes all who know him to rest assured that a positive answer willcome when the time is ripe and if that answer should be yes he will wage a campaign which only those who have been pitted against him know how hard it is to overcome JUDGING and the president has accepted the same to take effect Dec 4 which is the end of Gov Blackburns leave of absence- A conference on the amendment to be proposed by President Taft to the in teralate commerce act was held at the White House Attorney General Wick ersham Senator Cummins of Iowa who will introduce a bill of his own next week and Senator Elkins chairman of the Senate Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce took up the subject with the president Recent conferences at the White House have pretty definitely developed two facts in connection With the legis lative program ct
