Mountain School KINGS MOUNTAIN Seth 4In a letter by Lane Wall and Smith Aug 17 they say wo were president and secre tary at the time we urged them to levy ti the tax Thla la Incorrect as any ono can see by referring to our first letter to the INTERIOR JOURNAL of July 30 In that letter we say the night MO were retired a president and secretary thatI Dr Acton Informed them that the tax s4 had to be levied in June This is correct and as stated in the I J Aug 9 Mr Lane admitted that Dr Acton did say something about It but ho paid no attention to It Tho latter part was atf a meeting hold July 14 all trustees ii present with Maurice Singleton We were retired as president and secretary the very last days of May or the firstI days of June as stated previously They say at a meeting of the board on July 14 President Lano suggested that wa borrow money and have a nineI months school and then vote an add I tional tax A part of this Is correct and part Incorrect Lano suggested that we borrow the money and have a nine months school this borrowed mon ey to be paid out of next years levy which will be needed to run the schoo next year M G Murphy was the one who proposed that wo vote an ad ditional tax of 20 cents advalorem and a poll of 160 This was discussed ful ly end a molten made that it be done After the house was motioned on the question Ur Acton said If wo go into the preposition wo want it to carry and R1ho was fearful a 1 50 poll would be vot J down but stated he was for the lW poll if we thought we could carry It but suggested the poll bo put al1 The motion was seconded and all voted for 1 poll and 20 cents property tax- I which is tho limit on property 30 cents having been voted when tho school was established They say Murphy and Acton wero to keep quiet This Is not correct but it was unanimously agreed that all trustees keep this a secret and Dr Acton turned to Maurice Singleton and asked him not to mention it and he said ho would not All trustees with Singleton know these are facts They say they wore informed that we p were trying to Influence men to vote against the tax Wo know nothing of their information but we do know that all agreed to keep it n secret and in side of three or four days Lane and Wall had been talking It to others In a few days after tho tAX question was introduced Morris Wall came to Dr Acton and said Say nothing about this for the people will think this tax is just for one year but it will be fort every year After this they had 4 meeting and never notified Murphy of course this meeting was illegal At this meeting they voted to mako the poll tax GO cents Instead of 1 Dr Ac ton voting against it They got the J petition up without our knowledge and sent It to the countyjudge as we were informed When taxpayers would coma to us and ask us if this tax was for just one year as tho other fellows seem to have represented it we simply told the facts and that is why they say w were against tho tax They speak of us wanting to rule the board That ia not true They claim wa did rule the old beard You may 4ask any or all of the old board about this buUf wo did rulo it we always levied tho tax to support tho school They speak of tho girls from out the district going to school hero They were not hired girls and went to school with tho full consent of all tho trustees r We dislike to engage in personal af I fairs but they have opened it and wet suppose it is all right Morris Wall sent a girl to school last year who was r not five years old July 1 1908 He paid 1 60 cents tax and refused to pst 1 poll tax whici was levied on all patrons of the school lie is sending this girl to 18chool and she is not in tho school age 1After the petition was sent tb the coun ty judgo they called a meeting of the tax payers of the district and all pres t ent except ono man voted to give us the limit which is 1 CO poll and We l property tax and these men were tho ones they saId Fould vote the 1 poll tax down but say only have COc poll The face of it will show that l Lano pays nothing and has no children and Wall pays only GOe and they wan i as small a poll as possible so the foyThey say Murphy was elected truste- M In 1907 for two years and the record- show this When tho school was organized five men were elected trustees The school law says page 71 Sec 116 i Dlv 2 At the next regular election after the school Is organized and every third year thereafter there shall be but one trustee elected Then two true tees would go out the second year and two the third year We made a mis take In drawing or casting lotsbut that doesnt change the school law nor are we ngto blame some oe etee tot oijr mistake They sy Murphy re fused tho man elected trustee a certi ficate This is not correct They say In one statement that wo urged them to levy the school tax and in another we didnt say anything about It If you will kbdly refer to the issues of July 30 and Aug 13 you will see that this too Is incorrect After they were warned that tho tax had to be levied in June they failed to call the board together to levy it but that does not change tho school law Out why dont they Toss up about their mis tike
