I- u iuI THE INTERIOP JOURNAL 1 iW PIYOL XXXVII STANFORD KY TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 7 1909 HO 55 The Effect of Printers Ink Like poison Ivy and the eeven year Itch is printers Ink Once gotton on the fingers jt Is Impossible to eradicate It from the system These thoughts are evoked by the announcement of the reentrance of Mr W P Walton Into Lexington newspa tperwork He Is very nearly If not the neator of Kentucky journalism Ho was tempted to come to Lexington from Stanford of which ho was the leading citizen to take chargo of the Lexington Democrat which wo pur chased from him nearly five years ago After a short rest he purchased and- y revived the Kentucky State Journal retaining however his homo in Lex ington during his ownership and editor 4 ship of that paper Some months ago he sold that paper and engaged in the brokerage builnew in Lexington and the announcement was made by his friends that he had retired from the newspaper world for good But he has found it Impossible to rid himself of the disease of printers Ink which he contracted at a time when the memory of man runneth not to the contra ry and now the announcement Is made that he has acquired an Interest in the Kentucky Gazette Publishing Company and will have entire control of the editorial policy of that paper For fear some one may get the mis taken and erroneous Idea that our com parison of the effects of poison ivy and the sevenyear Itch to the effects of printers Ink ta Intended for anything more than to emphasize the compelling held the newspaper profession has upon Its we distinctly and emphat f Isally disavow any purpose of suggest IK tlt Mr Waltons reentrance Into LexlSgtM journalism will bo somewhat like tiwjreturn of the itch to those whom he opposes He to a democrat dyed In the wool To him It Is u capital crime for one who has been a democrat to oppose democratic candidates or a democratic platform Ho gives his first allegiance r to tho regular organization condemn ing with unmeasured scorn those who aro Independent In politics and damn ing with unstinted blame those who OP- pose the democratic party Ho has always wielded a trenchant and forceful pen in his younger days permitting himself to use n violence of language which wo believed then and know now from tho acquaintance wo have had with him did not represent hit real nature which Is kindly As we took occasion to say In com menting upon the sale of the Kentucky State Journal he has gotten more mel low more gentle more tolerant with a advancing age and greater succws We 4 hope that in tho conduct of the Gazette his earnestness of purpose will bo so tempered by tho kindliness of his na ture that there will be no new wounds reopenedi The Dom I e osrat at which time It was absorbed by the Herald have seen remarkable growth In Lexington and great channel In the newspaper world At that tlmo both The Herald and The Loader vfero more thap content with n flatbed Cox duplex press each rather pluming it self upon tho necessary ownership and use of such a press Now both The Herald and The Lead er have perfecting presses the speed of which Is moro than twice as groat as that of the Cox duplex and we pro sumo it is conservative to say that each publishes twice as much matter as well as twice as many papers during the week as it did five years ago We doubt not that Mr Walton can and will adapt himself to the changed circumstances and If any man can make a success of a partisan newspaper in thLexington he can By nature by hab by conviction he is a partisan ho has more than any editor we know the confidence and admira tion of those who believe in party reg ularity eo that under his editorship 1t there is reason to believe that tho Gazette will achieve greater success and have wider Influence than it has had since jt was launched upon tho f tempestuous and somewhat uncertain i sea whose waves ebb and flow over so many journalistic wrecks To him personally we extend greet- Ings i To him professionally we hopo and expect to give through these col I umns much good advice and many wise admonitions which wo are entirely I confident ho will not accept and will return in kind ITohim politically wo wish success in the campaign in which he evidently in tends to take an active and aggressive part Editorial Lexington Herald It is tho weak nerves that are cry- Ing out for help Then help them dont drug the stomach or stimulate the Heart or Kidneys That is wro- ngFVitalize these weak Inside nerves with f Dr Shoops Restorative and see how last good health will come to you again now I beg Mr Editor to be allowed to say a word This Is the first time in its history that Turnersville has been given a kick and if those who are doing the kicking would only stop and do a little lifting there wouldnt be any kicking to be done Whose fault is it that such stuff as cream of hops Is sold in our vicinity Whose duty is it to seo that it is not sold there Where pray are the offi Ibo aero weighed January 15 1908 estimated 1800 Ibs IIPrlco January 15 1908 1008 cts Remarks on Calculation The pool and crop was composed of ono crop of eighteen hogsheads Ir strictly No 1 quality better thanI that that sold for J25000 and cents an aero In 1904 being raised by I same parties and balance ot hogsheads was b fair crop of dI tobacco good weight The latlon of money received and that wero legitimate and comparison January 10 1908 and final value shown too Burley president for10f county Now I claim it no part of the reserve fund Is I paid that this tobacco that sold for i 1659 cents in the pool only nets 1009 cents on the 15th of January 1908 and also that this reduction ot nominal value not only refers to my crop but to every crop In the pool whether In Blue Grass or elsewhere and that I whether the owner all or a part ot these Items of ex pease or ho gets somebody else to do so and I defy any ono to show that they are not equitable and necessary charges to bo made In any correct cui allan 1 have also a calculation made In a bill made out by the a 1906 crop In tho pool This crop ItIon 1120 pounds was appraised at delivered to tho Equity cnts or 54067 penses Equitycharged id to enough to leave the net amount to ohswas delivered to tho Equity February 01007years so oarIto the account Discounting 38338 two years and it equals 34230 which equals about 109 cents per pound In this case all the reserve rut IVi cents was paid So you can see how deceptive theso figures are and how they glvo false Impressions f value Now In regard to our pooled tobacco making tho proper reductions It Slatter to only 18150 per acre or 109 cents per pound to be in reascd by any part ot reserve that IImay be paid As compared with other I rears the average price per acre Is n Igreat deal less than tho average for years 1904 1903 and 1902 that I being 20639 These three wore before any pool had been ormed the first pool being on 906 crop It is also a good deal Itban the average for the six years 1902 03 04 05 06 and 07 Now this calculation reveals anther tiring that out of thirtythree bog heads six have not been sold and ypald for In general figures 1 have been told by tho officers of the assocla Ion that there were leads In tho 1907 pool Threefourtbsj of this was to go to the Continental paid promptly and onerourth the Independents Now Instead ot calling for twentyfour at least of our tobacco they asked for 23 lenvl back ten Instead of 9 hogsheads all should Then I understand tbero about 4400 hogsheads allotted to Independents who failed to tako On this basis not over three hogsheads of ours should have been left on unsold instead of six I wonder I I want him to answer It If 1resl LeBus has between onefifth and of all his tobacco in the 1107 I This pooled tobacco was sold last notIpaldto attenZingu It Notice ono moro thing about the cal culatlon That my tenants who did go Into the moro for their tobacco than those that did Now we havo shown that financially the pool was no such success as claimed for it let us see what are the other results of the societys policy In tho proIoftent thrown out ot employment Ilnd In many Instances forced to leavo thll state Secondly wo havo driven 9ur largest and best buyers out of the state They had established warehouses at our county seats so we could sell them our tobacco at homo with out the uncertainty and expense of shipping to faroff markets They bnve sold out their property and left tbe EO far as I know I was talk lug the other day with one of our best farmers and asked him If ho had sold hla grass seed by tho territory un gathered lIe replied that as he had a sou old enough to learn business that he could not afford to do so for fear that his son might do tho same way lie was wise Exercise develops fae ulty The only way to keep up the character ct our people In judgment selfreliance and manhood is to gvo them the opportunity to exercise theso qualities By turning over our busl ness to a commltto of managers or maybe to one boss as this new pledgo Indicates we tend to make babies and weaklings of our people There Is no more certain and surer entering wedgo to socialism or communism Another evil result of this Equity movement has been a substantial denial of froe speech Any policy must bo tunda mentally unsound that demands as one of Us necessities the suppression at free 3peech Our colleges schools and our various means of cultivating tho mina are all Intended to teach us to think for ourselves In tho conflict at reasonable debate and discussion error Is gradually eliminated and truth evOo luted and strengthened Any cause that will not submit to this test there by confesses Its weakness and un soundness Again the policy of the Burley trust or society has very much Increased the production of tobocco outsldo of our Burley district Report from Missouri Illinois Indiana Ohio West Virginia Tennessee and also the outlying counties of Kentucky all speak of much Increased productlo The tenants and workers that OU drove out last year aro valuable assli ants In this development The extra ngant figures In regard to prices of th Equity orators have no doubt ver much aided this movement The hec that laid the golden eggs has been bad ly crippled if not killed Again whether Intended or not they haVE produced a crop of violence and lawlessness which has brought shame and humiliation on every patriotic Ken tucklan as well as financial disaster and which crop I fear may be pore vial unless wo arouse ourselves to a full realization ot the situation and de termlno to alto tho necessary measures to extirpate it The only rcasc why Bourbon county and a few olber counties have escaped tho most ottbl lawlessness has been time forbearance ot tho Independent tobacco grower and ther refusal to exercise their 10 propswere their friends and neighbors an for once they were willing to help them out ot tho hole Into which their pollc had placed them The Equity luu prosn1tltuteof domination and despotism By onE breach of contract mamountthe worst measures over presented Ie n Kentucky legislature they provide that Interest ompetltlon In manufacturing tobacco will continually arise Though they may buy It out for a while still new competition will spring up like the water in some great and everlasting spring whose flowing la rather In creased than diminished by draw ing tho water from It As a mate teer of fact we hare had more or less competition for the lalltslx- or eight years slnco tho Continental commenced buying In tho ficient at least to glvo us very profitable prices for our tctacco during that period For about half of that time we have sold to tho Independents Should tobacco get too low growers on land not suitable for tobacco where the cost of production Is relatively high and this would Includo prob ably a good deal of the new territory will quit raising and thus reduce the supply and Increase the price If tobacco wore to sell too high so that the consumption at tho prlco would not take up the supply raised then the accumulating surplus would be a weight to break down tho market finally A fair price for a commodity Is the average price nt which con sumptlon or the demand will take up tho supply too high or too low tho equalization process Is bound to go on Tho mills of the gods grind slowly but exceedingly flno These forces embodying the law of supply and demand work without cost or friction or violence or disorder On tho other hand the artificial arrange ment of tho Equity works by the arbi trary dictation ot an executive com mittee or president taking a mans business out of his hands with all sorts of costs for prizing insurance storage interest shrinkage fees and salaries with all Its bulldozing ot Indi viduals and the attendant violence and lawlessness Then again as a further means of protection against all trusts the Continental as well as the Equity the worst probably however well Intentioned by Its founders we havo over had Bend sensible practical men not demagogues to the legislature and congress who will pass reasonable laws to regulate trusts this Is a very complicated matter and even the best mccn at first and afterward will make mistakes but let them profit by their mistakes and gradually as taught by experience cvolute laws that will approximately accomplish tho purpose Then let the people elect honest and fearless executive ofllcerBto enforce the law But to be honest wo must trust mainly to tho law ofsupply and demand The speakers on the other side In regard to the now pledge give about tho same reasons In defense ornt- hat the Czar of Russia would give In justifying his refusal to gjve further liberty to his
