by word and act t promote tho cause of education by foe tering a better spirit toward leaders I I 4tho work by helping to train the yoplh to habits of obedience to delegated au thorities rather than be rebellious and 1 to help to educate the wholo child In preparing him not only to live but to enjoy life Let us first look at some ruIU of education Some ono will say I know a man without any education who has made a sucsess also a man with education who Is a dismal failure Wo will grant this but know that each illustration Is conspicuous for Ita rarity Let us look at striking example Take the number of prison Inmates and look at the overwhelmingly large percentage of illiterates In any prison and then bo bold enough to assert that education docs not make a better citizen Craft and dcsires for learning and In t spiring respect for teachers so that the teacher may do hit best work and by creating high aspirations Wo should 1notonly have high aspirations but ate o the courage to try to realiz- them for as Emerson says j which befits us embosomed in beauty and wonder as we are is chcerfulnws and courage and the endeavor to realI izo our aspirations It would appear to a close interests and sapping the life blood of our race When this Indulgence becomes so pa tent that parenta and citizens permit tho youth of our land to bo deprived ofI I that one good gift to all whether criticisms or any other creature separate the child from that possession tho accretion of which pro pares and produces a well rounded mae n or woman fit for all tho duties of T The president emerdus of Harvard Unl yersity said in a recent lecture The American public has more faith in ed uatlon as a means to tho wholesa improvement of human conditions than in any other agency Let tho citizens of Lincoln county and every other coun ty show their belief In this proposition by entering heartily into tho support of every educational enterprise Will this not mako for the progress and safety of our nation t An educated citizenship prevents clvI ic strife Wars havo ceased with tho progress of education Since we kno that civic strife can turn the happiest hearth Into a grievous sore of self tormenting earth wo are moro anxious to increase educational pride and thus do away with civic strifes May tho I beams of mercy shine on every son and daughter of our old Commonwealth andI community patron teacher and trustee not only in District No 1 but In every district in Lincoln county The Stanford Graded and High School will open for work Monday Sept Gth and we have better facilities than ever before There is a teacher for ever grade There are three university grad- o uates and others very capable A hgh school teacher of five years exporienc- n has been engaged The county hfg school Is coexistent with ours This moans that all the pupils in the county prepared for high school work wit proper credentials are entitled to free tuition About 16 names are already assured and others will follow Vocal music and elocution will be taught as they were last year Art will be mado a special feature with Mrs Catherine McClary a lady of special talent and thorough preparation as teacher The use of color as a means of expression has come to bo regarded by educators e as an Important factor In the develop ment of the childs mental powers This is not a mere fad or frill but Is a know him best say that his desire to retain his job is greater than his party fealty or honor If he should accept a repub lican nomination it will show that he was a democrat for office and revenue only and place him beneath decent con sideration We dont know the judge except by reputation but we hope for the sake of his own good name that he will neither solicit nor accept a republican nomination which so far as we can hear means his political damna lion PRESIDENT TAFT is not following- my policies as Roosevelt called em in oneparticular at least The rough rider could not have too great an army or too many war ships Mr Taft is not so warlike In fact he seems as mild a mannered man as ever cut a throat I or scuttled a ship preferring golf to fighting and taking things easy to
