declared that the Louisville electron of 1005 was void and that It was the duty of the governor to flll by appointment the offices made va cant by the decision of the court On Juno 15 1907 after the decision had been handed down and before the appointments were made the editor of the Courier Journal published an article from the Louisville Herald in which It viwas charged that Gov Beckham had a deal with John Whallen and I others to name YVhallcna friends for mayor and other office The Herald I article indicated that tho governor would appoint such men as would be j acceptable to Mr Whallen Tho editor of the Courier Journal proceeded in the same paper to write one of his heaviest and fiercest editorials denouncing such an alleged alliance While pretending to disbelieve tho absurd report he would neverles have his readers boo lieve that there was much truth in It We shall quote parta of his editorial to show with what tremendous Indigna tion ho only two years ago could hear of any democrat making an alliance with Mr Whallen Ho says We re produce elsewhere in this issue of the Courier Journai a most serious melange from the columns of our local republi can contemporary the Louisville Her ald There are some persons who might call this a pipe dream It is certainly fantastic That a newspaper however absurd its protcntlonv to virtue hould set up for tin divinity and to increase the illusion should supplement Its poet by the addition of two typical thieves would be the rather laughable than terrible but that the democratic governor of Kentucky seeking an organ should throw himself Into tho em brace ot such a combine Is preposter ousFrom the staggering grammar and reeling rhetoric of the above conglom oration of words and Ideas it is dUn cult to decide whether tho great edi tor was trying to criticise tho Herald nnnlhllato the governor or demolish the English language In Its maudlin com mixture however a keen eye can de tect that he was trying to say that the governor had reached or would reach the depths of sin and depravity if ho oven let Mr Whallen speak to him about those appointments Ho then proceeded to show as is his inveterate custom that ho and the CourierJournal had always been right and had never made mistakes lie proves at length to his own satisfaction that ho alono of all men possessed a monopoly of virtue political purity and Infallibility lie closes this fulmina tion with the following elegant and po litolanguageLet tho horrible horo scope of our lively young contemporary the Herald as either a vagary or t youth or mere horseplay in advance of a party convention No doubt some such conceit has penetrated the hot and hazy atmos phereof tho vaudeville theatre of our local politics perhaps has percolated through the precincts of disreputable and mercenary political adventure doubtless the professional traffickers in contraband goods havo given it out to enhance tho value of tho stolen waresI but the governor of any least of all tho governor of Kentucky meditating an act of suicide should pub licly select a house of Illfame In ordorI that he might die In the arms of pmsI titution is simply inconceivable This illustrates what the sinless editorI of the CourierJournal thought Whallen only two years ago and oven much later for their affectionate re conciliation only occurred a few months ago It is an evidence of his character istic inconsistency his reckless abuso and utterly irresponsible and immoral nature Ho Is today the close ally and journalistic advocate of this same Mr WhalJen His paper enthusiastically recognizes Mr Whallen as tho leader of the Democratic party in Louisville and is seeking to aid him In tho exten moil of his leadership over tho State I Almost dally his paper contains pane gyrics upon Mr Whallen and relates the ovations which ho receives in visit ing various cities of the State What bargains and sales what miserable po litical deals or manipulations brought this strange coalition we aro not to say The public is not into confidence in such But 11 goes to show that 1preparedsome magic process by which abuse from this pureminded day may bo changed
