Percy Haley as a member of the Board of Control. The place has to be held by a democrat and of course wo are anxious for our brother to land the plum, believing he would HI) the office with credit alike to himself and the State. Mr. Walton has never had the opportunity of proving his fitness for office, because he has never held office. He has spent his life with the boys in tho trenches and it would be strange indeed if his first appointment should come from the party be has fought for years. We hope Gov. Willson will prove that he Is a judge of men by naming Mr. Walton for the responsible position. Down in Tennessee, where the confessed murderers of Capt. Rankin were saved from just punishment on the gallows on a flimsy technicality discovered by the Supreme Court, a man was given 11 months in the workhouso for murder. The one doesn't seem more of a travesty of justice than the other. The laws seem to be made to protect those who break them. Dr. Osler, the man who became famous because of his suggestion that men having lived as long as useful be chloroformed at 60. has just reached the limit himself and there are those who expect him to take his own prescription. But he will doubtless say when asked why he doesn't, that a doctor prescribes for other people, not himself. The Aldrich bill increases the duty on mofquito nets from 60 to 150 per cent, just as there is a great demand all over the country for protection against the onslaught of the terrible little insect. But what difference does it make to tho leaders of the g. o. p. if they do bite us poor folks? The Conference Committee decided to reduce the corporation tax to 1 per cent. As tho tax can not be collected for a year and probably not in two or three if the Supreme Court takes its usual time to decide such questions, the corporations are not losing any sleep over tho matter.
