term oprned on June 8th and will close on July 17th The enrollment for the present term alone Is 159 This makes 733 to enroll In the Normal School for i the entire year A large number of students are In the Summer School who r have been here for several months In all there about 275 doing work at pres ent in tho Normal School Tho enrollment e of this year surpasses that of last year by 183 and there ore a few who perchance may enroll before tho closo of this year As the progress witch has been made during this year far ex ceed that of last year so it is hoped that next year will keep abreast of tho educational demands and greatly surpass i tho present year An enrollment of 1500 and an actual attendance of 1000 has been adopted as the battle cry for 1910 There oro 4500 teacher in tho Eastern District and it docs not seem impossible to reach these figures All that is needed is an awakened public sentiment and a reali zation of the opportunities of tho Nor mal School at Richmond Prof I II Uoothe of tho faculty will visit during tho Summer and Fall a number of county institutues as a special repre r sentative of the Normal Ho will en deavor to show tho teachers why they should attend the Normal and como In contact with tho educational move merits of tho day and better prepare themselves for their work as teacher l Tho school has been at a disadvan tage in the past en account of tho lack I of ample room This condition will bo relieved by another year Three hand some brick buildings are now being erected upon tho campus at a total cost of 97000 They aro tho model school building a girls dormitory und a pow er house They are modern in every respect and will add greatly to tho con fort and convenience of tho school Tho contract for theso buildings was let to Combs Lumber Co of Lexington some time in April and tho work has been progressing nicely all Summer Tho power houso is nearly completed and the brick layers are about through with their work on tho model school building A pipe line ditch which con nects tho power houso with the other buildings extends across tho campus and makes tho campus a little unslght for the present The work Is being ijry pushed rapidly and will be finished by WinterTen twelve of our young men at q tended the Stato Convention of the Young Mens Christian Association which was held at Danville Juno 1117 The local organization of tho Y M C A Is very active and our delegates reported a pleasant and profitablo stay i in Danville It Is tho policy and spirit of tho Normal to have representatives In all such gatherings as this one Wednesday Juno 23 was a day oil at the Normal and tho school went in a body to the Kentucky Educational As sociation at Estill Springs Tho trip was an Interesting and enjoyable one except for a Summer shower that added the discomforts of dampness and mud to the occasion Tho cornerstone laying and dedication of tho model school building occurred last Tuesday A crowd of 500 or GOO people was present and listened to ablo addresses from Gov Willson Senator McCreary and Hon A R Uurman The cornerstone was laid by Gov WII son at 530 and the handsome immense building was dedicated to the late Dr f K N Roark In his speech Gov Wit f son made a strong appeal for bette and better schools He said that Iroade measure the civilization ofau people and that the schools measure theI 1 1 education and enllghtment of a people Tho Normal School has enrolled sev oral prospective county superintend cots during tho present year Thi nominees for that office from six coun ties have reversed because of some little irregularity in getting the jury This is the beginning of the end The men will never be hanged Old techni cality has saved many n murderer and will save as many more The laws seem to be mado to save those who break them It is just such acts as the Ten nessee court has been guilty of that breeds the mob spirit and makes arel- ort to lynching sometimes apparently necessary If there had been the least doubt about the guilt of those convict ed of murdering Capt Rankin the caso would be different There being none they should not have escaped on a mere technicality The reversal of these case es will create greater contempt for the law than ever and if mobs get in their work the highest court of Tennessee will be responsible for it Tile Somerset Journal says it is all poppy cock about Caleb Powers and Charley Finley opposing each other for Congress and that the battle royal will be between Powers and Edwards with Finley on the stump for the lived in Lincoln county in years died at the homo of his father Mr A W Carpenter at 630 Tuesday evening after a lingering illness of a complication of troublees Ho died on the 35th anniversary of his birth and we dont suppose that there was ever a young man more willing nor better prepared to meet his God Joining the Christian church at Huatonvillo when a nero boy he followed the teachings of that church and so lived that he would be ready when the final summons came Mr Carpenter was in business in Stan ford for quite a while and he made friends here who sorrow at his untlme ly death He was scrupulously honest conscientious business man and it was 1a pleasure to deal with him The writer had known him for many years and unhesitatingly says he never know a letter man or citizen Deceased was a graduate of Kentucky University Lexington and was an unusually well posted well read young man He is survived by his father Mr Adam W Carpenter stepmother and several ulf brothers and sisters
