Had the act been dono immediately after tho Negro shot tho showman, when heat and passion wero aroused, there might be paliation for the offenso against law and decency, but for men to wait hours after their victim was safely in jail and then In the dead hour of the night tako him out and hang him Is absolutely without reason or excuse. Tho Negro was in custody and auro of punishment unless the jailer would have surrendered him to his friends with as little resistance as he did to his slayers, which, according to newspaper reports, was nothing to speak of. A gamer, or a less unwilling officer would not have given up his prisoner without an alarm, at least in a city supposed to bo fully policed. The whole business smacks of disregard for oaths and law and is discreditable to the city, which will not soon recover from the effects of such criminal lawlessness. Every man engaged In the cowardly business deserves the fullest punishment, but unfortunately it Is more than likely that they will receive no more than that inflicted by a scared consciousness of having murdered a hu man being in cold blood, without the slightest danger then or ever. The governor may offer rewards for the murderers but it will Drobablv amount to nothing. There were too many engaged in the brutal business to maKe it available. It is a pity though that every man of them can not be made to suffer the punishment they meted out to their victim.
