people speaks volumes of censure against them There was no excuse for taking the law in their own hands and disgracing the capital of the State with a lynch ing almost in the shadow of the newn State house except the gratification of s brutalinstinct Had the act been done immediately after the Negro shot the showman when heat and passion were of aroused there might be paliatlon for in the offense against law and decency but for men to wait hours after their victim was safely in jail and then in the dead hour of the night take him out and hang him is absolutely without rea son or excuse The Negro was in custody and sure of punishment unless the jailer would have surrendered him to his friends with as little resistance as he did to his slayers which according to newspaper reports was nothing to speak of A gamer or a less unwilling officer would not have given up prisoner without an alarm at least aS city supposed to be fully policed Theb whole business smacks of disregard fort oaths and law and is discreditable to the city which will pot soon recov in er from the effects of such criminal lawlessness Every man engaged in the cowardly business deserves the fullest punishment
