Tho Supreme Court of tho United States decided the case of the Adams Express Company vs the Commonwealth of Kentucky, involving the right of tho company to ship liquor into n local option county, contrary to the law of the State, In favor of tho company. Tho case Involved the shipment of whisky from Indiana and Tennessee to for which the company was lined $50 for each otTenso by the circuit court of Hart county. Sheriff Shipp, Deputy Sheriff Gibon and four other residents of Hamilton county, Tenn , were declared to be guilty of contempt of the Supremo Court of the United States, in combining u conspiracy in 190o to lynch a Ne gro named Johnson, sentenced to death for criminal assault. Johnson was lynched after he had been granted an appeal by tho Supreme Court. Sen tence will bo passed upon the six men next Tuesday week. The opinion of the court was handed down by Chief Justico Fuller. I! this week when the supreme court of the United States decided in tho case of tho Commonwealth of Kentucky vs. the Adams Express Company that the latter can not bo fined for shipping liquors to this State from another, be- causo it is interstate commerce and not subject to State interference. The case involved the shipment of liquor from Tennessee to Oonnieville, in Hart county, Ky., in which the Express Company was fined $50 in each of several cases of a similar nature. A law which permits the will of a local majority to bo set at naught in this manner ought to be repealed. Prohibitory laws can make Proiubiiion pot another black POLITICAL. but slow progress so long as it remains on the statute books. Estimates show that the deficit in the State treasury will reach $1,500,000 by tho end of the fiscal year, June 30. Considering that there were $1,400,000 to tho good when tho republicans took charge, this Is going some. It is but justice to say, however, that tho last general assembly made many large appropriations without providing for their payment. It is also but justice to soy that Gov. Willson has spent $1G1,14S.99 for soldiers to suppress the night riders, much of which was a useless expense. The unveiling of the statue of Gov. Goebel has again been postponed owing to the illness of Arthur Goebel, who is in the West fighting an unequal battle with the dread tuberculosis. The monument has not been veiled for some time. It stands near the entrance to Frankfort' 8 city of tho dead, and is the object of great interest to all visitors at the capital, who loved the martyred statesman In life and revere his memory in death. We are not a very ardent admirer of Congressman Langley, of the 10th Kentucky district, but he is right in some things. His bill to prohibit the National government from issuiug liquor licenses In dry States or sections ought to be enacted into law. Maine has been "dry" for two generations, by State law, but the government in a measure nullifies its operations by issuing 358 liquor licenses in the State. It is a burning shame. The report that Gen. Johnston has resigned es adjutant general ought to be true if it isn't. It is humiliating to see this old Confederate soldier and former head of the democratic party in Kentucky playing second fiddle for an incompetent republican administration.
