the possession of Mr 811 perkin of this city Tho iknife was used by Col William Casslus Good In the fatal encounter In tho post office at Lexington In November 1839 In which Col Armstcad Miller Swopo was stabbed to death and Col Goodloo died a few hours Inter from the effects of a wound from a pistol shot 1 fired by Col Swopo Tho knife was picked up from the floor of the postof t nco by ono of the clerka in the office and covered with blood was wrapped In a newspaper J II Swope a brother of Colonel Swope went to Lexington Immediately f on receipt of tho news of tho tragedy I to look after the remains and for some reason the knito was turned over to him Mr Perkins was conducting a hotel in Danville at the time and Mr Swopo brought the body to his house on the way to Lincoln county for Interment and stopped with Mr Perkins The knife was banded over to Mr Perkins clerk to bo kept over night and was placed In tho ofllce safe In the excitement Incident to the occasion the knife was forgotten and remained in the safe wrapped In the bloody paper about a year Mr Perkins sold his rt h hotel to A Tribble and In cleaning out j hid safe Incident to turning over tho business ho found It there and still has It In his possession The knife has al buckhorn handle and a spring on thu back to preven It from closing when In use When opened It is a fraction over 7 8 inches in length the
