Records of the Courts The present Stato of Kentucky was prior to December 31 1776 a portte- of the county of Fincastlo In tho Stat of Virginia By act of tho Legislature of Virginia from and after that date Fincastto county was divided into three counties of which one was called Kentucky and embraced all that part thereof which Ilea to tho South and west ward of a line beginning on the Ohl river at tho mouth of the great Sand fit ti Creek and running up the same and the main or Northeasterly branch thereof to tho Great Laurel Ridge o Cumberland Mountains thence Southwesterly along said mountains to the I 1 lino of North Carolina and contained p 37680 iquaro miles In May 1780 Kentucky was divided Into three counties Jefferson Fayetto and Lincoln Jefferson embraced tha part of the South side of Kentucky riv er which lies west and north of a lino beginning at the mouth of Dig Ilcnson creek and running up the same and Its main fork to the head then south to the nearest waters of Hammonds creek and down tho samo to JU junction witH tho town fork of Salt river thence South to Green river and down tho same tolls juncture with the Ohio river Fayette embraced that part which lies north of the line beginning at the mouth of tho Kentucky river and run rtlng up the same to its middle fork thenco up the middle fork to tho head thence Southeast to tho Washington line I Lincoln county embraced the residue of Kentucky county 4 The first court In Lincoln county was held Harrodsburg on tho 16th day of j January 1781 Tho following persona having received a commission from the governor of Virginia appointing them justices for the county of Lincoln John Bowman Benjamin Logan Hugh Me Gary William Craig Stephen Trlgg John Cowan Jno Kennedy Jno Logan Abraham Bowman Isaac Hltc William McBride William McAfee and James Estlllo with authority us well to exe cute within the limits tho other duties of said offlco prescribed by law to be of any court to be hold for said county of which court one of the said justices being of the seven first named shall be one nnd also a commissioner of Oyer nnd Terminer directed to the samo person being commissioner of Oyer and Tcrml ner for the trial of slaves In the said county with authority to bo of any court of Oyer and Terminer The first court held the 16th of Jan uary 1781 was organized by the sever nl persons abovo named taking the oath of offlje court adjourned to Feb 21 Y 1781 When court convened Feb 21 1781 Col Benjamin Logan came into court and offered ten acres of land in r eluding the Buffalo Springs for build ins a court ho+ iun and other necessary pabllc buildings and also fifty acres atone mile distant nearly South oastfrom said spring as long us tho court of said county shall continue there and it ap pears to the court to be the moat con venient place U Is ordered that th court bo held there for the future an it is ordered that The court bo adjourn I ed from Harrodiburg to St Asaph to a be held there the next court in course May torm 1783 Benjamin Logan nnd George Davidson appointed to em ploy persons to remove the court hous and prison for the use of the county to such place on tho land laid off for that purpose as they shall think most convenient and to bo completed in such manner as they shall direct Ordered that Willis Green bo appointed clerk of this court August term 1783 Benjamin Logan 44 and Hugh Logan Gentlemen are appointed in room of William Mayjto view tho prison and courthouse July term 1786 Ordered that the dweling house of Col Ben Logan bo t made and considered tho Goal of the county until further provisions bo made heroin by the court February term Feb 21 1787 At n court held for Lincoln county Ordered that William Montgomery Walker Bay lor James Davis and Andrew Kincaid Gentlemen aru appointed and request ed to let the building ra court houso for the use of tho county of the dimen sions towit The body of tho house t be of good white ash or oak logs well hewed and dufltalled Thirty feet long twenty feet wide and fourteen feet pitch to ba covered with lapt Bhingles two jury rooms ono on each side of the same kind of logs and roof on each side at the end where tho door is to open so that the whole building shall form a T The floors to ba laid of good oak or I white ash plank at least two inches thick and the said commissioners are empowered to direct the Stantord and there held for tho future And then a court wa held at the new public buildings In th town of Stanford anti c Lincoln- on the same day and year aforesaid Justices present Isaac Shelby Henry Waiteaa cour t hold at Stanford April 23 1832 A ma- Jority of the justices of tho peace of this being present and concurring do order and direct that a now court house inYupon and select the best plan nnd structure of such it in ordered that Michr ael Davidson John Mctloberts and Wil liam Shanks bo appointed commissioners who are directed to draw and pre sent to this court a plan or diagram of such building and that an estimate of will ordert ed that said commissioners or a major ity of them do after the next term of this court proceed to let out tho erec tion of said building to tho lowest bid der stipulating for tho payment of the same to the undertaker at such time and in such manner as they in their discretion may think proper and that they take from the undertaker bond with good and sufficient condition bond for tho faithful execution and comple tion of the business February term Feb 10 1834 Com missioners plan and diagram approved and filed and that said
