has not four which aro practically all wet Virginia presents a string of victories for tho antisaloon element as prohibition now exist in 80 out of the the States hundred counties In Texas where more than half the counties have accepted prohibition the voters soon will be called upon to vote upon al constitutional amendment for prohibi tion In Arkansas twothirds of its area or 75 counties are dry and the question of Statewide prohibition will be presented to the voters for decision Florida is partly dry through local option and like some of the other States the sale of liquor is principally confined to the cities The results of prohibition generally are gleaned from reports indicating a great decrease in tho record of arrests for drunkenness an increase in the bank deposits of la borers fewer cases of wife abandon ment and a decrease in criminality gen erally The difficulty in enforcing the prohibition laws however js conceded to be one of the chief obstacles to its absolute success in many States and this phase of the question together with a falling ofT in revenues is to some extent baffling to the authorities TUB situation at Stearns Whitley county is greatly improved but a com pany of boldiers is yet there Berry Simpson who led the miners in their resistance that cost the life of Deputy U S Marshal John Mullins of Rock castle and a miner named Ross who hailed from Casey county is still at large but he phoned Gov Willson that ho would surrender on certain condi tions which were not accepted The Stearns Company wants pay for their hotel which was set on fire by the marshals in their effort to arrest the gang and thinks the government should remunerate They claim their loss is 6 000 The trouble arose over the men ignoring an injunction granted by Judge Cochran of the Federal court prohibit ing union miners from interfering with those miners who did not desire to join the union and kept at work Six of the crowd was arrested ANOTHER rolled and we now write it lists furnished by all can didates who desire to submit lists The officers shall be as nearly divided as possible as to judges clerks and sheriffs among the various candidates The officers of the primary shall as soon as the polls are closed which shall bo done at 4 r M proceed at once to count the ballots cut for each and every candi date for office and after counting same they will place all ballots voted in the ballot boxes furnished by the commit- S tee scaling up the boxes as required by law and within two days thereafter the sheriffs and judges of election will deposit the boxes wjth the chairman of the county committee at the court house in Stanford The officers of the election in each precinct will make and sign a written statement showing the number of votes cast for each and every candidate for office In the precinct and place said statement in an envelope and deposit it in the ballot boxes 6th The returns are to be made to the chairman of the county committee and should
