Kinnamon of the Western Normal School as conductor and Miss Avis Westcott assist antThe election of secretaries was en tered into at the morning session Osd after several rising votes Miss Elizabeth Roscoe was elected secre 1 tary A motion that Miss Mary If Seargent who received the next highest vote be elected assistant secretary was made and carried unanimously Dr Kinnamon who came in just aMjr the election with Prof C E j Dudley was greeted by applause The rest of the morning session was devoted to the enrollment of A members and other preliminaries- At the morning session Dr Kinna mon discussed Education and his t subject in the afternoon was Edu cation in Relation to Social Institu tions Miss Avis Westcott of Minneapo is who is assistant instructor gave stan interesting talk on is to be president of the Citizens Savings Bank at Birmingham Ala instead of chahier as announced in the last issue of the Kentuckian He regrets very much to leave his adopt ed home but the turn pike construction will be succeeded L by Jas E Moseley on August 13 TwyIin the country on the Newstead pike and engage in farming Mr Moseley is also a farmer living on a fine farm a few miles east of town HAMLETTWhile Prof Barks dale Hamlett was spending his sum mer vacation in Virginia he presented the merits of the famous Mogul Wagons so efficiently that several Virginia firms have Hangs Four Who Were in Wit1 I 4IfjComplicity the Cunningham a y I r Russellville Ky Aug lF urInegroes were lynched here at oclock this morning They were VirgilJorieLf John Jones John Boyer Joe Riley The men were in jail charged with trivial offenses but accused of con federating to prevent the arrest of Rufus Browder a negro who shot and killed J F Cunningham a prominent young farmer Cunningham and his murderer had a dispute over wagesMembers of a Lodge They were members of a negr lodge at Keysburg The lodge is o a local nature and it is thought tha they were conspiring against th JAboutt gather and by 1 oclock 100 men had arrived Coroners Inquest The coroner held an inquest over the bodies of the four negroes who were lynched and J W Butt the jailer was called as a witness He stated that about 1 oclock he heard a knock on the door and he was ordered tocome to the door which he did He was then covered with about half a dozen pistols and shot guns and was asked if the negroes John Jones Virgil Jones John Boyer and Joe Riley were there He told them they were and they caught hold of JI1 ls rte Him to the door of thejail and forced him to give up the keys to the cells where the ne- groes werefThe members of the mob Were heavily masked and spoke in a quiet tone There was no swearing and nod a shot was fired They asked for Browder the negro murderer arid COL EWINGENDORSED Christian County Committee Stands By the Old V Leadertiw BARBECUE VOTED DOWN Good Reports Received From All Parts of the County I The county committee of the To bacco Association held its monthly meeting yesterday in the city court room the circuit court room being in use by the county institute The districts were nearly all represented and the reports were in a most hope ful vein The crop is doing well everywhere except in the most southern part of the county where there has not been enough rain No lawlessness has been reported any pare except from the Gracey dis trict where the I C depot was burned two weeks ago The principal unfinished business was the matter of giving a barbecue for the association members This was discussed and it was decided not to have a barbecue this year Resolutions were adopted strongly endorsing Col Felix G Ewing forI reelection as General Manager These resolutions were unanimously adopted and Col Ewings support in thecquhty la enthusiastic and gen front of the jail and thence out the Nashville r pike by the mayorts residence and on to the place of hanging There was not a sound nor a shot The i bodies were discovered this morning by Prof Estice superintendent of I schools All the witnesses testified i that they did not know anyone in the mob The jury then retired and returned the following verdict We the jury summoned by C 3 OConnell deputy Proctor tree where the notorious Arch and Duke Proctor were hanged some years ago They were cut down and brought into the court house Warning to Negroes A large placard was fastened on Ithe hanging group bearing these words You negroes will learn to let white people alone and breakup your lodges Browder was in jail at Louisville Shortly after his arrest a mob called at the jail here to lynch Brow der but Sheriff Rhea had hidden him in the woods and Jater took him to Bowling Green from where he was removed to Louisville A special term of court has been called for Monday to try Browder METHODIST BUY ANDERSON LOT r Handsome New Church To Be On Main Street CORNER 6TH AVENUE I Price Paid Was 7000 For Lot and Improve f ments The deal that hadbeen on for some time between the Methodistchurch and Mr Jas H Anderson was clos ed Saturday and the lot was purchased for the new Methodist churct B The consideration was 7000 for the lot of 100 by 270 feet and improvements including one of the largest frame dwelling houses in the city orginally built by Jas M Howe and remodeled and improved by Mr An derson The lot is on the south west corner of Main Street and Six th Avenue and is only one Square from the Baptist church After donating the lot on Ninth street Mr John C Latham changed his mind and told the committee to secure a lot elsewhere and he would pay for it Thereupon the Anderson lot much more desirable in every way was chosen and was presented to the church by Mr Latham improvements areandthevaluable lot is deep enough to locate the house on the Water street with the enterprise A year or two later when it came time to appoint the New York commission to the Louisiana Purchase exposition at St Louis Governor Odell made Mrs Mack the only woman member of the com mission and she did excellent work in that capacity Mrs Mack was Miss Harriet Taggart and married the Buffalo editor in 1801 Her father like the late Grover Cleveland was once sheriff of Erie county And thereby hangs a tale It was soon after Mr Mack had acquired Mr Taggart as a fatberlnlaw and Roswell P Flower was then governor A vacancy in the sheriffs office occurred Mr Mack and the Times were not then the potent factors in the Democratic pol itics of western Now York that they have become since But the Times proprietor took a trip to Albany and laW the governor and Just when tho
