progenitors of fa mous Icings in Incredible treasure of funorary furniture richly carved and pverlald with gold Last year Mr Davis with Mr Edward R Ayrton as his assistant discovered the tomb of King SIptah of the XIXth dynasty This year Mr Davis and Mr Ayrtoo have made a more sensational find They have discovered the tomb of the famous Queen Til herself The famous Valley of the Tombs of tho Kings the Blban elMulak Gates of the Kings at Thebes the place where the remains of successive sovereigns of ancient Egypt from the sixteenth to the twelfth centuries B C were burled has become fruitful soil for the Egyptologist who has found In the tombs deeply cut in the limestone rock the royal bodies so long ago pre served and laid away And It Is either here or in the hiding places to which they were afterwards removed In or der to save them from the depreda tions of tombrobbers that most of th actual bodies of thegreatest monarchs of Egypt and of members of their families have been found In modern timesThe tomb In which the remains of Queen Til were found Is unimportant In Itself In no way comparing with the sepulchres of other monarchs nearby so that it may well be that It was not originally Intended to be the rest ing place of so great a queen Bu within It the explorers found the r mains of the funeral state of Til an goldeIa wings encircled and clasped the bro of Its mistress She lay wrapped about with sheets of burnished gold within a coffin slightly molded to the form of her body and encrusted with carnelian and colored glass set in This coffin was originally placed in a wooden shrine or naos of whit the remains were found Its side were covered with stuc overlaid wit gold leaf The stucco was modeled In relief with representations of the queen making offerings to the Aten the sundlsk which she and her worshiped These reliefs are tomLtraordinary beauty and delicacy the other objects found In the tho most beautiful are the canoplc jars to hold tile entrails of the de ceased the lids of which are fashioned- In the form of portrait heads of the deceased queen which show us her features more perfeotly than any other known representation of her Un happily the mummy Itself tells us nothing only the grinning skull and a heap of bones are left All the con tents of the tomb were found instate a ofj the utmost confusion The burial place had been roughly dis turbed by the orthodox priests of Amen who on the overthrow of the Ateri heresy Invaded the resting place of the queen In order to hammer out from her funeral furniture tho name of her heretical son And at sometime unknown water entered the tomb rendering most of the wood work rotten and reducing It to the condition of touchwood Much of it as well as the skull and bones of the queen has only been saved by being coated with bolting paraffin wax which soaks into the Soft material and hardens It When African Bess Get Angry The naUv bee would appear to ex haunt its entire stock of sweet nature In storing up honey and a more spiteful piece of natural history It would bd hard to find says the RhodoslaHerald A few days ago a suburban dweller found this out to his cost A clumsy native upset a hive and immediately the air was full of winged anger Tho native was wise aId cleared but a poor unfortunate goat and A few pigs quite Inno eejit of the danger lay on the aud were soon covered by the ated Although it Is estimated that many hundreds of thousands of dollars i worth pf precious relics ht ve already privatonthe scientists of tho government are highly elated over the fact that a law has those the wonderful Pueblo Bonito is probably tho most pic turesque as well as the most exten sive That scores of collectors in the west have for years made a lucrative living by exploiting the ruins of the has been known to the au 4southwest a long time During the hearing that the senate committee on public lands held for the purpose of gaining light on the subject Dr Henry Mason Baum president of tho Records of the Past Exploration society testified that three brothers in IColorado who were among the first to discover what a gold mine the ruins were had systematically worked the Pueblo and rightminded pcqple of the world especially to those in Amer lea who have followed with peculiar in terest the fortunes of the former Con suelo Vanderbilt Instead of giving way to morose despair because the glitter of a dukedom in England has been found to be a hollow mockery orI seeking to forget Her sorrow and hu miliation in the pursuit of gay thought less pleasure the duchess of Marl borough has with true womanly grace worthy an American girl thrown her activities and her fortune into a mis sion whose object is the bettering of the lives of the women and children of Imprisoned criminals She has just completed her plans for carry on this unique charity on a big scale and she has done it all in such a quiet and un ostentatious way that the facts have but just become known Some Amen can papers have inaccurately stated that the duchess had joined the direc torate of the Church army She has not done so neither will she work In its ranks but proposes to carry on her worthy charity on Independent lino This new benevolent enterprise of the duchess takes the form of a home in London for women and children of a special and previously almost nog leoted class They are the wives and children of imprisoned criminalsIn nocont sufferers for the misdeeds of husbands and fathersand to make a home for them or at least some of them the duchess of Marlborough has just taken a 21 years lease of a roomy building In Endsloigh street St Pan eras This Is being reconstructed entirely by her orders and negotiations are in progress for the use of two buildings on either side When all these have been opened and time has proved their usefulness the duchess out of her American millions may put up special buildings or add to her teases the adjoining houses on tho same block For with her this is not anew charitable occupation of the Lenten season nor the passing and forced duty of a great lady of the land butt a life work in carrying out which she hopes to solve one of Londons many social problems Readers of course are familfar with apdduchesshas the friendship cf Queen Alexandra By marriage her aunt is the marchion ess of Lansdowne wife of the former I foreign minister She is the acknowl edged loader along women in political society Lady Lansdowno also is a great friend of the queen and may be come mistress of the robes afr court The queen and Lady Lansdowne deep ly sympathize with the duchess They have cheered her up and advised her on more than one occasion Soon after tbe estrangement between the Marlboroughs the queen suggested that the duchess devote her time to hard work in order to get her mind off i her troubles Her mother Mrs O H P Belmont was with the duchess at the time and together they went to the Church army and had a talk with Its leader the Rev Wilson Carlile The duchess wanted occupation which would not bring her before tho public Mr Carlile took her to No 6 Banner street St Lukes where in the midst of tho city slums the army has its lit tlo branch devoted to the aid of pris oners wives and families The work is carried on in a modest way without publicity by Mrs Hodder wife of Capt Hodder the man in charge of the fire wood department of thc hurehirmjv The duchess was asked to help and help she did She went feverishly Into tho work She bought 200 blankets 1OQO yards of cotton to be made into sheets and underclothing boots and shoes everything in fact that Mrs Hodder said was needed And she began visiting the wives of the jailbirds- A short time after the duchess had begun this work Queen Alexandra who has taken deep interest In the duchess suggested to Mr Carlile that the work be turned over to her entire control Mr Carlile Immediately followed her maJeBiyB suggestion In his frantical jy ppprgetlqway ce ruJfeed to Sunder I land houso The duchess arks at jiiiiOji eon with Mr and Mrs Belmqnt Carlile joined them He imparted some of his enthusiasm even to Mr Bolmont x v Next day the duchess of Marlbor ough motored with her motlfer down to No 6 Banner street and took over tho Church armys little nucleus as her own hervery own charity There fol lowed many days of hard office work And It was on one of these days that the new project of the duchess now being carried out was born In Banner street Is a big white washed buildingthe Houseless Poor asylum This was started in 1819 and the original work is still carried on But by the Church army which has its kindling wood brigades headquarters there Mrs Hodder six years ago personally started befrlendlngtne families of nYen in jail Tho yens grew to such proportions that she called the attention of the Church army to t Four rooms in a building across the street were rented and bits Holders lot charity established there It is this little beginning which the duchess of Marlborough has taken over Todays roll contains the name of moro than a hundred families It was after the first week that the duchess astonished her lieutenant by outlining her plans She announced that the society would continue in Banner street only until she was able to got new and proper quarters First ly she explained there should be a building devoted to children Here the little ones should live until their fa thers sentence ended and the family could be United once mores Here they should be taught to work to read and write and to play The next Item of the duchess plan was a maternity home properly and thoroughly equipped as a real home rather than a cold whitewashed mater nity hospital Lastly she declared she would have a womans home Hero prisoners wives were to be housed at least those whose health or condition needed something better than the wretched accommodation of a single dingy room or filthy hovel And here there should be an employment bureau and skilled women to teach these prisoners wives sowing domestic economy Ironing artificial flower making and such like simple Industries For many a day the duchess Mrs Belmont and Mrs Hodder drove round in the duchess motor car visiting ad dresses of suitable buildings given them by real estate agents None suit ed Until Endslelgh street was reached There are situated some large houses almost under the shadow of the old gray church of St Pancras No 16 was vacant It contains 14 large rooms and is four stories in height In addition to a commodious basement The two houses on each side are at present occupied though one Is to be lot So the duchess closed the deal for No 16 buying the lease which has 21 years to run The tenants of one of thq other houses want 1000 before they agree to move and with other lit tle snags In sight Consuelo has hand ed the matter over to an agent and will go ahead with one house The four big rooms now rented In Banner street will be continued until such time as the duchess decides to move everything to Endslelgh street But her office the headquarters of her now charity will be moved at once to No 16 and thqre also will be estab lished the employment bureau On the register of names to be kept there will be placed the occupation best suited to in enoh woman rjio Duchess then will advertise in the dally papers or her llttlo staff will answer advertise 1 ments Many of tho women if thoy can do nothing else will go Into do mettle service knowing full well that their children are comfortable and well cared for at the Childrens Homo The entire responsibility expense and management will be in tho hands of the Duchess She may ask tho aid of helpers from tho church armyfrom the dainty dames of high society or she may be satisfied with the simple help of the women to whom sbe now has become the guardian and minis tering angel J r V- CourierJournal I AND Hopkinsyi11eKentuoa iH n r n h a 9 Both One Year For Only 2
