Chicago platform platform adopted at Louisville con- ¬ tained not only an indorsement of the Chicago platform but it announced the partys position on the new questions tnat have arisen since and that regular way nor a convention to which delegates were sent In the regular way It was a con- ventlon formed of those men who were opposed to the other ticket that was nominated It can not be called a representative convention It can not be called a convention representing the Democratic voters of this state and now the ticket nominated by the bolt- ¬ ing convention Is in thiscampatgnwith no possible prospect of election and with but one influence and that Is to aid In the election of the Republican Applause ticket And the basis upon which they rest their fight is that the convention that met at Louisville did things that relieved the voters irum auf uousauuu iu supyo l iu When a man tells you that ticket you are justified in helping to elect a Republican governor you ask him whether If Mr Taylor had been a can- dldate against Mr Goebel in that con- ventlon there would have been any doubt of Mr Goebels nomination in Applause that convention Because a man was nominated who the LIME ANO GEMENT o Thero are few things moro inter ¬ esting in the natural history of ani- ¬ mals or indeed Jtiora wonderful than tho partiality which individuals of totally different raco have from the place where the fair was held and who had- probably brought it on foot from his cotfegc that morning Tho pig was driven up to the rec- ¬ tory andplaced in the sty and on the next morning my friend went to sec his new purchase and to turn him out into the fold to take an airing where he was left to pick a few peas that had been thrown down to make his pas- timemoretagrceable aiier awiuxe tne pig was not to ue found and a servant was sent to see if he had strayed back tc his old home There he was found happy and free among the other animals of the cottage Ho was again driven to his new quarters and confined to the sty for nearly two days WJien it was thought he had become reconciled to his new home or had forgotten his old ono ho was again liberated and suf¬ fered to roam at will about the field He was watched for awhile but seemed to be so entirely atliome that he was loft and forgotten until it was time to confine him to his own quar ¬ ters when he was again sought for in vain He had once more strayed to his old haunts and had to be brought back again On the morning following this es- ¬ cape my friend went to the sty and found near it a little brown dog which he then remembered ho had seen about the premises several times since the fair and it occurred to him that the pig and he were acquainted and would if the opportunity offered trot home together So tho pig was liberated in order to see if the surmise was correct and sure enough recognition sweet and tender was soon witnessed They were followed at a respect ¬ able distance for fully half a mile as they diligently trotted home together the dog leading the way and anxious- ¬ ly looking back every now and then to see if his friend was following The little dog had been missed by his master for long periods together and his absence could not be account- ¬ ed for till my friend solved the mys- ¬ tery There was evidently a strong attachment between them but whether it was the force of this attachment or anxiety to look after his masters interests the conduct of the dog was equally wonderful London Mail tlcHoc ana Skill The bell which Is ahuslcal instru ¬ ment may be likened to an organ to increase its diameter The illustration represents the large hour bell of the Cathedral of St Pierre at Geneva upon the lathe of the Atliers do Construction of Vevay This bell weighs 3542 pounds and gives the note ml The operation of tuning is performed as follows The bell is placed upon the lathe and ilrnily fixed thereto by the crown If it be desired to lower the note a tool is placed opposite the swell and the bell is slowly revolved so as to detach a thin shaving of bronze This operation is continued and more and moro metal is removed as far ns the rlni Meanwhile the bell emits a con- ¬ tinuous sound of which the tonality becomes lower and lower The tuner who must possess a perfectly correct ear compares this sound with the vibration of his tuning fork As soon as the latter and the bell vibrate in unison he stops the motion and tho operation is fin ished Thereafter the bell may mingle with that of its companions without any danger of putting their melody out of tune When it is a
