Sept 9 1899 at 10 oclock a m Mr Fowright Announces Mr J N Fowright the merchant tailor is the first Democrat to an nounce for councilman He wants to represent the Seventh ward Mr Fowright was born in New York in 1867 and his first vote was cast for David B Hill in 1888 He has been a Democrat all his life He came to Hopkinsville eight or ten yearsago andhas been a consistent party mag1 He is a red the public schools of this county in round numbers 8000 chil- ¬ dren A saving of 292 on each child means a saving of 23360 to tho pat- ¬ rons of the common schools of Barren county alone This one plank in the Democratic platform ought to be enough to insure the election of the state ticket by an overwhelming majority and we be- ¬ lieve when the people have been made thoroughly familiar with governor at the antl Goebel Democratic conven tion which is to bo held In Lexington Aug 16 now Is regarded by as a presidential possibility It all depends on whether W J Bryan comes Into Kentucky to make speeches for William Goebel If Bryan keeps out of the bluegrass quarrel ex Governor Brown will continue to be ex Governor Brown for even his most ardent admirers do not believe he can be elected But if Mr Bryan Ignores the score of letters which have gone out of this town today advising him not to come Into Kentucky during the present campaign the anti Goebel Democrats would repudiate him and our opinion it is both unjust and unfair to attempt to proscribe a man in politics because he does not think exactly like some other man or set of men There is serious doubt in the minds of some of our ablest and best men as to whether prohibition laws actually promote temperance Many maintain that men cannot be made temperate by law any more than they could be made christians by law and that temperance chris- ¬ tian influence business influence and a proper personal self control But waving this feature of the ques- ¬ tion it strikes us as a foolish thing for any man who is a Democrat and who believes that the principles of Democracy applied to our govern- ¬ ment are best for the general wel- ¬ fare to vote against the Democratic State ticket because the candidate for Governor was opposed to some particular kind of prohibition law The Roberts law in our opinion not calculated to advance or pro- ¬ Its mote the cause of temperance become a law effects if it should It would be bad
