were brought to Eddyville for interment Cadiz Telephone Layne Mr Benjamin Layno one of the oldest citizens of the Fairview neighborhood died last Thursday after an illness of more than a year Several months ago Mr Layne suf fered a paralytic stroke ana never recovered from the shock He wns a man of wide acquaintance and liked by all who knew him Deceased was 84 years old and was an uncle of Messrs C H and Henry Layne of this city The funeral services were held at his late residence two miles South of Fairvjew Friday morning a large number of sorrowing friends being present The interment took place at the family burying ground Jesop Mr Thos S Jesup died at Mr the home of his brother-in-laWS Davison at 915 oclock Sunday evening He was born in December 1851 and was consequently nearly 44 years of ago His complaint was a Btomach trouble called colitis by his physician He was taken sick a week before and grew constantly worse until the end came in spite of all that could be done by his physician Mr Jesup was the oldest son of the late Jas Jesup and was unmarried Ho was a man of superior intelligence and a graduate of Emi nence collere in which institution he completed the course in five langua ges English Latin lireelr tferman and French In Ureek he took the honors of a class of twelve His in tention was to engage in teaching but after a few years experience he acquired a dislike to school room confinement and engaged in active business For tho last five or six years he had been in the transfer business of which ho made quite a success Ho possessed unbounded energy and industry and his close at tention to his business was proverbial Be was a good business man and a clever gentleman who was much es teemed by a large circle of friends His nearest relatives are his made in recont speeches regarding alleged Democrat ic misrule and the pilfering of tho State Treasury by Democratic Judges in allowing witness claims in mountain counties He proved conclusively that the claims were allowed by He stated Republicans Judges that not one dollar of the states funds had been misappropriated un- ¬ der Democratic domoination save that which Dick Tate took and that more than one half that amount had been recovered He expressed himself as thoroughly confident of the success of the state ticket on the 5th of November and asserted that the currency ques- ton would cut but little figure in the result Bis speech was well received To morrow morning at 8 oclock General Hardin accompanied by Messrs Caruth Breckinridge and Berry and a multitude of citizens from all parts of the Lexington and Eastern Railroad to Natural Bridge where a big barbecue and political gathering will be held Penalty A MOUNTED BAND The Democratic gubernatorial can- ¬ didate has just returned from a long trip through the mountains of Eastern Kentucky where he frequently made two speeches a day For a time Gen- ¬ eral Hardin had a mounted brass band and took musicians around through tho mountains with him Astheyrode along through the rough mountain passes the band would playprobably the first music the natives had ever heard The mountineers would come out to see what the Btrange
