killing of Arch Dixon Brown eon of Governor John Young Brown together with tho slayer Fulton Gordon April 80 in Louisville recalls tho fact that some of the most striking tragedies nnd romances thiB state has known has been connected with Kentucky governors a d their sons In the battle of the Thames in tho war of 1812 Gov Shelby then an aged man wa present in person and at the request of t en W II Harrison afterward Pres ident and tho grandfather of a president commanded tho Kentucky troops One of tho Kentucky major generals in that cngagernpnt was Joseph Dosha who in 1824 was elected governor of this commonwealth During hia term the contest between the old court of appeals and tho new court was on nnd Gov ernor Desha proved himself equal to the exigencies of the trying times But ex eitinp as the fight was between the two tribunals it was entirely overshadowed when tho jjreat Desha Baker tragedy occurred in November 1824 in which Isaac B Desha son of the Governor was the assassin and the survivor Some time during the summer or fall of 1824 a New Jersey trader named Ba ker had gone pouth on busines and in November was returning on horseback from Natchez Mississippi to his north- ¬ ern home When passing through Fair view Fleming county on the old Mays ville and Lexington turnpike about ten miles from where I now write he was brutally stabbed and beaten over the hea 1 with a whip by an unknown assailant As Baker was supposed to have on Itis person a largo sum of money robbery was supposed to be the motive The finger of suspicion pointed to Isaac Desha Bakers gray horse was found in his possession and other belongings as well A web of circumstances strong as Holy Writ wound themselves about him and the son of Kentuckys governor was charged with being an assassin and a The ablet legal talent highway robber was employed on either side and the trial became and is still regarded tho most famous Kentucky has ever kuown Never before had there been such an effort to save a mans life but the shrewd- ¬ est defense the repeated trials and shifts wero not able to shako the jury in its decision that young Desha had cruelly murdered the New Jersey trader in cold blood nnd he was therefore condemned Tho old soldier governor to be hanged who had never experienced a tromor under the fire of the British and who had helped to carvo out the young state when utmost every day and hour exposed the white man to the trencherous Indians tomahawk or bullet now trembled like a leaf when placed between stern official duty on one side and parental affection on tho governor of Kentucky Thomas Metcalfe elected in 1828 was the tenth chief executive As there seems to be no record of any one else between I am confirmed in tho belief that Gov Desha continued to serve out his term notwithstanding tho popular impression to tho contrary It is a coincidence however that Gov Metcalfe the successor of ¬ ¬ a son who became noted as tho slayer of his irran But this occurred many years later and was regarded as an honorable nffair Gov Thomas Metcalfe was known as Old Stono Hammer as in his younger days lie had beon a stone mason and had built many houses in Kentucky and Ohio He came up from the ranks serv ing in the legislature in congress and as chief executivo of his stato elected on the National Republican ticket repre- ¬ senting the Old Court party Leonidas Metcalfe son or tho old governor became a strong Union man during the troublesome period leading up to the war of 186I fi5 In this section of the state avowed Union men were not particularly
