square miles or only C000 square miles leas than the area of Pennsylvania In un delvoloped mineral and timber wealth and in agricultural possibilities Kentucky is we aro sure the peer of Pennsylvania It has 12871 square miles of coal area against only 11200 square miles as the entire coal area of Great Britain The development of this enormous coal territory has hardly wo may say com- ¬ menced if wo compare what bus been done with what will be done and yet while only 109120 tons of coal were mined in that State in 1870 the output in 18Sf was according to local authori- ¬ ties 2000000 tons although this is more than Saward s report The greatest portion of the coal area of Kentucky excepting onlvthoso strips of territory contiguous to tfie Louisville and Nashville Cincinnati Southern and a few other roads which have been in operation for somo years is essentially an undeveloped wilderness but one which it is claimed contains greater possibili ¬ ties than any other rogjon of
