surrounding Mrs Alice Jett who died at the residence of W M Cornell at Ixo 732 West Market Street Wednesday night was cleared yesterday Early in the morning two well dressed strangers who are residents of this city but who refused to disclose their names called to look at the remains and remark- ¬ ed that Mrs Jett was from one of the best families of this State Later on a telegram was received from Lexington asking Mr Cornell to place the remains in a vault and wait until he heard from the brothers and sisters of the deceased It directed also that the remains be placed in a good coffin The letters in Mrs Jetfs trunk were thoroughly overhauled yesterday and they went far to explain her past life She was 32 years of age and the daugh ¬ ter of Eobert Cockrill of Breathitt coun- ¬ ty The woman inherited a great deal of property mostly farm land lying on the Cumberland river In 1874 she married John Jett who was killed seven months after marriage in afued between the littles and Jetts A short time af-¬ terwards she went to Lexington where she lived for several years A great deal of her property was sold and the money dissipated in luxuries Mrs Jett started a confectionery at Lexington and afterwards went to Hazel Green and Eminence where she established millineries All her business ventures were- - failures and in despair she came to this city where she lived a disreputable life until broken down in health and spirit Ehe was taken in by Mrs Connell The woman was a slave to the opium habit but in her last days she finally conquered it She still has considerable property mostly coal land at tho old homestead This is valuable and several time3 she refused to sell it to speculating agents The remains were placed in the hands of City Undertaker Hess who will care lor the remains until her friends arrive Courier Journal During the past year a prominent lady from one of the mountain counties an own cousin to Mrs Jett visited Lexington Jeflersonville and Louisville searching for her but without any success A few weeks ago a brother of Mrs Jetts dead husband also visited Lexington and spent two or three days and after making diligent search returned to his mountain home giving up tho missing woman as ¬ ¬ ¬ -- ¬ ¬ dead Mrs Jett came to Lexington about ten years ago bringing with her a snug little sum of money and engaged in the millin ¬ ery business After remainining in this city for nearly two years she decided to locate in Eminence She engaged the services of one of our most worthy young ladies moved to Eminence and opened a millinery store in the old Bowlder block where she did a very successful business for about one year After leaving Emi- ¬ Never has a publication so thorougblv carried out the true meaning of a cowardice of the people in their treatment of the liquor traffic cannot fail to be read with much interest The publisher may well be proud Published by WJennings Demorc3t 17 East 14th Street New York On last Tuesday morning Craig Tolli ver came into town heavily armed and stated that he apprehended trouble with James and Jesse Blair and requested several of our citizens to go out and make an effort to secure peace between them After remaiuing in town an hour or so he started out and discovered the two Blairs armed with double barrel shot guns coming into town He returned and informed Judge McKenzio of the facts The Judge at once placed Tolliver under arrest and disarmed him and summoning a posse he arrested the two Blairs and disarmed them After a talk it was agreed that the parties were tho victims of a misuuderstanding and they pledged themselves to peace and good ncmeanor and were permitted to depart They are cool determined brave men and but for the prompt ac-¬ tion of Judge McKenzie serious trouble would have resulted and he deserves great credit for it It may be understood now that there will be no disturbance of our peace allowed while there is physical force
