order by President SL Stevens r t who urged that the business of the transacted with the greatest dlspatcllIA oilcall of the locals showed 37 locals represented by delegates The following committee on resolutions was appointed D Ford Warren Taylor J R Weller Lon Black and E PSanderfur They retired to consider resolutions The president announced that a few minutes would be devoted to talks for the good of the order whereupon Rev H D Burch asked if turtles who had signed the pledge of the new organization wino are now dissatisfied could on legal basis dis regard the same and sign thp regular Equity pledged ExPresident David Mbrelaud responded that he had con sulted with a firm of lawyers and they Informed him that the new organ ization would likely sue the regular Equity Finance Committee if they received any tobacco pledged to the new organization t Mr E G Austin responded with a splendid talk in support of the Jooperatlve Telephone business whloh has been in successful operation in lands which the priests compelled them to tenant and till Although Intensely loyal to the church the Filipinos against the friars and were In rebellion against them when we took over the Islands The union of church State they regarded as andIfor that was the way It had been centuries The priest was given plete supervision and power over the municipal machinery of his town They were loath to believe Mr Taft I when he told them that with us the I church had nothing to do with too State The situation between tLc natives and the friars had to bo settled and speedily It appeared best that tho Philippine government purchase outright the friars lands and resell them to the tenants or whatever pur chasers offered But tho consent of the Vatican had to be procured It also was Imperative that tho friars be deported transferred to other fields and that priests strange to the Philip pines be Installed In their stead So long as the friars remained there was certain to be friction and turmoil Neither Mr Taft nor any of those associated with him had th3 most re mote thought of lessening the author ity and spiritual power of the church In tho Philippines The matter was grounded upon expediency and was gone Into like any other piece of business diplomacy statesmanship whatever It may be called Mr Taft visited the Vatican armed with authority to pay 7000000 from the Philippine treasury for the friars lands It was a good bargain for the church The offer was accepted the friars gradually were withdrawn and so with a minimum of friction Mr Taft wrote Finished at the end of an and those Democrats who support him on the other Is that the Republican party proposes to revise the tariff without damaging American Industry and Bryan pro poses to smash tho tariff without caring what trouble he causes how many millions he deprives of a living what blight and desolation he brings upon the farm the factory the work upon all the various activities which keep the American people
