the army brogaps upon his feet were but poor protection from the wet and wild Institute a child of twelve jeers or I so his wf zned dtwu featuren j bowing Theitire fleets of want and hunger gave him ws tbejutt the kind of a boy the office needed and lug gested that be enter and make appli cation immediately thinking that the outlandish spectacle of the mlnature vetetan would be a source of amuses ment to his shopmates And so he was l lor DO sooner bad he entered the door than one raishchievous feeder started whittling Marching through Georgia and lIthe balance joined in until the foreman walked down the room to discover the cause of the commotion Approaching the boy he entered into conversation with him very earnestly much to the surprise ol those who witnessed the incident and was seen to put his band in his pocket give the boy some money walk with him to the door and stand there conversing with him for some time btfore dismissing him Such was the induction to the printing bus iness of one of the quaintest charac tern I have ever come across In all my career for at the Wowing of the whit tie to resume work that afternoon the foreman brought thiiTsame odd look lug character with his old army uni form but with the appearance ot hay ing made some attempt at cleaning up for the occasion his face and bands showing the evidences of soap and water and bis staggly hair brushed andstralghlcdsomewhatto me and told me to put him to work taking Sheets from the folding machine the first duty assigned tOA new boy upon entering the pressroom And then the trouble began For all of the mischievous youngsters that ever en tereda printing office be was the worst He waa impudent saucy vie joeL meddlesome and he didnt know what fear was Small as he was he bad wonderful strength combined with great agility and ere he had been there a month more than one oi us were nursing sore spots froze con tact with blnii By reason ot bis pug naciousness he became a great favor lie with most of the men and was as heartily detested as well as feartd by th boys and also by the girls With the foreman he was Irom the flint a fivorite the reason for which we uilsunJersto for a long time and no matter what his offense the Old Map1 always had some excuse for him and it was evident that it was a gOOd policy for all hands to put up wth anything the kid chose to do if they wanted peace The engineer of the establishment was a grizzled old soldier crusty and overbearing whom nobody liked and j whop ver hesitated to administer a kick or n blow to any venturesome boy that dnred to get within his reach but be too took this pest 01 the pressroom to hU heart and would de lend him nt all htzafda Where no other biy couM enter without abuse the engine rOo IIhll youngster was soon a welcome guest and it was no unusual sight M not ntlnie to witness the old engineer and this ridiculously clay boyor be never ditcarded the old blue unifotm Mtting together L earnestly conversing being to run tbeItqne almost as well as known in those das as Yankee Doodlesnd he whistled that saute old tune until everybody In the place was nearly dls tracted Whether he knew any other tune I know not but Joe Bowers he gave us morning noon andnight I believe be could not help it So long as he waddle you would not hear it but put him to doing anything and hIs whittling began Complaint to the interested in the division to commanded by the fore man of the press room and when they appeared what was our surprise to lice them heeded by a band of three pi CMC a bass drum a snare drum and a filethe base drummer being theold engineer and the filer none other than Joe Bowers old army uniform and all stepping as proudly as one of Ha asIIitbe big printing office Heed up along street must have put mote ol the devil into him than before for from that time he was king of the office lie rode on the elevator and whittled Joe Bowers until the printers book binders and people upstairs were nearly crazed and he thrashed every boy in the place by fair means or foul so that none disputed his sway The foreman ot the press room and the old engineer stood by bint on all occasions and the proprietors con doned any cffense he mlght be charg ed with III graduated about a year alter the advent of Joe Bowers and some ten years niter found me working in a far western city near which was lo catedan army post one of the attrac tions of which was the excellent band attached thereto and parade days at tracted visitors from far and near to bear the splendid music discourse by the band the leader of which I Sound to have been an old schoolmate of mine many years agone Accompan- Ied by some friends I visited the post end renewed my acquaintance with my former schoollellow and he called our particular attention to a cornet solo that was to be the feature ol his program that daytelling us he was es peclally proud of the soloist because ot having taught the performer the in I strument Tbe parade and the band concert were a success the day being delightful and the attendance very large and must to my surprise I discovered the comet soloist to be none other than the pressroom pest ol for mer dayoe Bowers lie was master ol the instrument and the ap plause be received would have glad dened the heart of a Levy or an Ar buckle lIe was little changed in appearance since last I bad seen him his stature being not more than five feet and his countenance still had the aged pinch app arauce of a prema turely old man After concert we re paired to the quarters of my friend the bandmaster and at my request he elated how he bad discovered the talent for music in the boy by his per formance on the fife for the drum corps ol the Grand Army post had given hint infractions In music and finally when be organized his band engaged little Joe U cornetist and they had been together ever since He culled Joe in and introduced him and I dont think I ever enjoyed any thing more than bearing his comments on the characteristics of the diSerent employees 61 the old print lug office way back east and the tucks and pranks be had played on nearly every one of them As a mimic he was snperb and my friends were delighted with him He played for non the cornet many fine selections but the piece that pleased me most and that carried me back to my boy hood days and the scenes of my earl experiences was the old old tune ol Joe Bjwers he gave us as a final at my desirei Some years after I met the Old Man in Chicago where he hail beet located for many years and related tc him my meeting In width The curious feature ut them is that they are made up wholly ol sand without the fllIjbltft Intermixture of any foreign element The sand is comprised of finediamund shape particles so light that they seek a new position at every bretzt and brecz sin Kansas are too common to be noticeable These beds of cand are much given toshifting A heavy wind will move whole acres of them Hills 50 feet in height will be transferred little by little a distance ot too yards and a road between two mountains will be found next day entering the very bowels of a single hill There is no limit to the curious tricks the eddying storms will play with the sand The tflect prodacIvery snow In many places however a long period ol quiet weather has permitted a turf to form that can withstand the action of the elements In these spots much fruit is raised the best of which is a wild plumb renowned through out tie whole State But ifone digs through this turf the sand is found beneath and extends and sandhill cranetwo animals which still linger in this unfrequented region though otherwise almost driven from the State Even human bones have been dug up the remains probably of early travelers caught in the dangerous sands during some unrecorded storm Under these conditions especially if the storm is rotary like the famous tornado this region forms a natural deathtrapNo explanation of the hills has ever been advanced Early and less well informed investigators thought they might be the remnant of some heavenly body which by chance had encountered the earth after the surface formation was practi cally finished Some even went so far as to declare them to be the remnant of the nucleus oi a comet Later on when the cataclysmic school of geologists was in the ascendant they suggested that some mighty prehis tone cyclone as it swept through the country had collected the sand and had deposited it there where the force of the storm was expanded Scientists of the present day are disposed to find a more simple expla nation They say that as the inland sea subsided this stretch of land may have been uplifted somewhere no that it formed an island and the action ol the waves collected and deposited the sand about its borders Then after the water had disappeared the laud lank to a level with the surrounding territory thus leaving behind it the heaps of sand in the form of hills The theory though it does not ac count for the phenomena is perhaps the most rational yet proposed and it will probably be found to have consid erable truth when the complete hlsto ry of these
