Printtrs Union In Washington DC gives the iollow i ing Intel sllng story I One cold day in the winter of 18 CI quaint uichin panted to look into the window of a large pressroom in one of the western cities the whirling machines and the paper Jailing there t from having attiected bis attention ills attire was that ol many a poor boy of those times the remnant of an old mmy uniform =the trousers lied up fr4hhnttftdIease the length and the ultevea of the blouse so much toolong than the tips of hIs fingers were visible The old blue cap that crowned his head rested upon his era for suppoit and the army brogaps upon his feet were but poor protection from the wet and wild Institute a child of twelve jeers or I so his wf zned dtwu featuren j bowing Theitire fleets of want and hunger gave him mote the appearance of en isge nun than a boy Aa be g zed longingly at the busy scene thewaruilb and ltfjhttirfs of the place fug ttd to hit mind that tm ployment there must be a vtry pleas ant occupation and he rercvltd to make the tOut Just then a oung man oseofthe rppientices Mepped out upon the street nod to him the urchin put the question Say hosp j du you think there is any chance for IldlC11ulolltd to the young man that it would be I a good joVe toenll the youngster against the Old Man as before man of the ptesuroam was designated by all the employees and he told hint bethought he ws tbejutt the kind of a boy the office needed and lug gested that be enter and make appli cation immediately thinking that the outlandish spectacle of the mlnature vetetan would be a source of amuses ment to his shopmates And so he was l lor DO sooner bad he entered the door than one raishchievous feeder started whittling Marching through Georgia and lIthe balance joined in until the foreman walked down the room to discover the cause of the commotion Approaching the boy he entered into conversation with him very earnestly much to the surprise ol those who witnessed the incident and was seen to put his band in his pocket give the boy some money walk with him to the door and stand there conversing with him for some time btfore dismissing him Such was the induction to the printing bus iness of one of the quaintest charac tern I have ever come across In all my career for at the Wowing of the whit tie to resume work that afternoon the foreman brought thiiTsame odd look lug character with his old army uni form but with the appearance ot hay ing made some attempt at cleaning up for the occasion his face and bands showing the evidences of soap and water and bis staggly hair brushed andstralghlcdsomewhatto me and told me to put him to work taking Sheets from the folding machine the first duty assigned tOA new boy upon entering the pressroom And then the trouble began For all of the mischievous youngsters that ever en tereda printing office be was the worst He waa impudent saucy vie joeL meddlesome and he didnt know what fear was Small as he was he bad wonderful strength combined with great agility and ere he had been there a month more than one oi us were nursing sore spots froze con tact with blnii By reason ot bis pug naciousness he became a great favor lie with most of the men and was as heartily detested as well as feartd by th boys and also by the girls With the foreman he was Irom the flint a fivorite the reason for which we uilsunJersto for a long time and no matter what his offense the Old Map1 always had some excuse for him and it was evident that it was a gOOd policy for all hands to put up wth anything the kid chose to do if they wanted peace The engineer of the establishment was a grizzled old soldier crusty and overbearing whom nobody liked and j whop ver hesitated to administer a kick or n blow to any venturesome boy that dnred to get within his reach but be too took this pest 01 the pressroom to hU heart and would de lend him nt all htzafda Where no other biy couM enter without abuse the engine rOo IIhll youngster was soon a welcome guest and it was no unusual sight M not ntlnie to witness the old engineer and this ridiculously clay boyor be never ditcarded the old blue unifotm Mtting together L earnestly conversing enjoying some thing to eat and very often a can of I beer and a pipe P4Asorderedby the foreman I in- tuct1r d hirilas to hIs J tlc I n taking the sheets from the folder my assignment at that time being to run tbeItqne almost as well as known in those das as Yankee Doodlesnd he whistled that saute old tune until everybody In the place was nearly dls tracted Whether he knew any other tune I know not but Joe Bowers he gave us morning noon andnight I believe be could not help it So long as he waddle you would not hear it but put him to doing anything and hIs whittling began Complaint to the foreman was useless far he up held the boy in everything he did the fiend having I believe hypnotized he Old Mauso he saw nothing wrqn ordlsagreeblc lu him The Grand Army of the Republic was then in its Infancy and I well re member their first pnde In that city JheJorettmn bad trvtd with distinc tion during the war being one of the first to respond to the call for troops and the old engineer had served with him and both were active promoters of the organlzillon that has for more than thirty years made presidents and virtually ruled the country Prepara tlonn for the first puade were made with much care and attention and the event was the talk of the office for monthsWhen the day arrived the office i closed the propt letora being much in sympaly with the event and everybody was of course interested in the division to commanded by the fore man of the press room and when they appeared what was our surprise to lice them heeded by a band of three pi CMC a bass drum a snare drum and a filethe base drummer being theold engineer and the filer none other than Joe Bowers old army uniform and all stepping as proudly as one of Ha asIIitbe big printing office Heed up along street must have put mote ol the devil into him than before for from that time he was king of the office lie rode on the elevator and whittled Joe Bowers until the printers book binders and people upstairs were nearly crazed and he thrashed every boy in the place by fair means or foul so that none disputed his sway The foreman ot the press room and the old engineer stood by bint on all occasions and the proprietors con doned any cffense he mlght be charg ed with III graduated about a year alter the advent of Joe Bowers and some ten years niter found me working in a far western city near which was lo catedan army post one of the attrac tions of which was the excellent band attached thereto and parade days at tracted visitors from far and near to bear the splendid music discourse by the band the leader of which I Sound to have been an old schoolmate of mine many years agone Accompan- Ied by some friends I visited the post end renewed my acquaintance with my former schoollellow and he called our particular attention to a cornet solo that was to be the feature ol his program that daytelling us he was es peclally proud of the soloist because ot having taught the performer the in I strument Tbe parade and the band concert were a success the day being delightful and the attendance very large and must to my surprise I discovered the comet soloist to be none other than the pressroom pest ol for mer dayoe Bowers lie was master ol the instrument and the ap plause be received would have glad dened the heart of a Levy or an Ar buckle lIe was little changed in appearance since last I bad seen him his stature being not more than five feet and his countenance still had the aged pinch app arauce of a prema turely old man After concert we re paired to the quarters of my friend the bandmaster and at my request he elated how he bad discovered the talent for music in the boy by his per formance on the fife for the drum corps ol the Grand Army post had given hint infractions In music and finally when be organized his band engaged little Joe U cornetist and they had been together ever since He culled Joe in and introduced him and I dont think I ever enjoyed any thing more than bearing his comments on the characteristics of the diSerent employees 61 the old print lug office way back east and the tucks and pranks be had played on nearly every one of them As a mimic he was snperb and my friends were delighted with him He played for non the cornet many fine selections but the piece that pleased me most and that carried me back to my boy hood days and the scenes of my earl experiences was the old old tune ol Joe Bjwers he gave us as a final at my desirei Some years after I met the Old Man in Chicago where he hail beet located for many years and related tc him my meeting and Fro by the Wind The broad expanse of level prairie which makes up the greater portion oi Central Kansas is broken in one place by a range of bills whose origin Ls ri question that has puzzled scien tlsto Tbe prairies are easily explained they are simply the bed of a vast oCean The surface contains usually a limited amount of sand evenly dir tributed This also is to be expected for tiaction ot waves would spread uniformly over the sea bed the sand washed down Irom the bordering mountain But here In the middle of this vast ocean Is a miniature mountain chain as distinct from the surrounding laud as if it bad dropped from the skies The hills stretch from near Lyons KflqtO Hutchincon a distance of about 25 miles They form the ate of a circle and are on the average ol lour miles In width The curious feature ut them is that they are made up wholly ol sand without the fllIjbltft Intermixture of any foreign element The sand is comprised of finediamund shape particles so light that they seek a new position at every bretzt and brecz sin Kansas are too common to be noticeable These beds of cand are much given toshifting A heavy wind will move whole acres of them Hills 50 feet in height will be transferred little by little a distance ot too yards and a road between two mountains will be found next day entering the very bowels of a single hill There is no limit to the curious tricks the eddying storms will play with the sand The tflect prodacIvery snow In many places however a long period ol quiet weather has permitted a turf to form that can withstand the action of the elements In these spots much fruit is raised the best of which is a wild plumb renowned through out tie whole State But ifone digs through this turf the sand is found beneath and extends downward to the old prairie level At this point be gins the soil limestone strata and conglomerate exactly the same as InI all the rest of the regionIThis fact proves aceJereafter the enrtace forma don bad been completed and further corroboration Is found in the sub stances burled beneath the bills Bor hugs have uncovered great cottonwood trees with the branches all intact and bones of antelope and sandhill cranetwo animals which still linger in this unfrequented region though otherwise almost driven from the State Even human bones have been dug up the remains probably of early travelers caught in the dangerous sands during some unrecorded storm Under these conditions especially if the storm is rotary like the famous tornado this region forms a natural deathtrapNo explanation of the hills has ever been advanced Early and less well informed investigators thought they might be the remnant of some heavenly body which by chance had encountered the earth after the surface formation was practi cally finished Some even went so far as to declare them to be the remnant of the nucleus oi a comet Later on when the cataclysmic school of geologists was in the ascendant they suggested that some mighty prehis tone cyclone as it swept through the country had collected the sand and had deposited it there where the force of the storm was expanded Scientists of the present day are disposed to find a more simple expla nation They say that as the inland sea subsided this stretch of land may have been uplifted somewhere no that it formed an island and the action ol the waves collected and deposited the sand about its borders Then after the water had disappeared the laud lank to a level with the surrounding territory thus leaving behind it the heaps of sand in the form of hills The theory though it does not ac count for the phenomena is perhaps the most rational yet proposed and it will probably be found to have consid erable truth when the complete hlsto ry of these hills shall have been dis covered Chicago Chronicle Much pain and uneasiness is caus by piles sparing neither age nor sex Tablets Buckeye Pile Ointment cures the most obstinate case Price 50 cents in First theystand upon the declaration emI bodied in that Chicago document then they tome to the wiee conservatism and the peoples interest admin iitration of J 0 W Beckham andt lastly they highly commend the Dem ocratic officials of the county in hand ling the county business It is al most needless for us to say that there are only two Democratic officials int the county and they are members of the Fiscal Court One other Justice la a Populist and two are Republicans while the Judge is aPopu1iltaodr the County Attorney is a Republican As to the manner in which tbee countys business has been handledI we will have a word to say when thee time is opportune What we desire to look after just now is Mr BeckE hams wise cootervatiam and to the peoples interest administration- In 1899 Mr Beckham and his colt league Mr Goebel were candidates for the highest offices in the Statee The State held an election under the supervision of the latter at an enormous expense The Constitution beI ing the court instructed the jur1I the people of Kentuckyto cast their ballots for their choice which should be the law of the landand thejury being the people found for the other fellows The disappoint ed in the cote rebelled against the peoples verdict and instituted a con test at an enormous expense iu which they succeeded iu reversing tbe willc of the people as expressed at the polls by a partizau and biased legilt lature This revolutionary course of tbe office pirates arnmtJ the peaa pie to great excitementalmost to revolutionand in the beat of this dilemma the pirate leader was slain Immediately came this decree The Voice of the people is set a side by a Vote of tho legislature ami Btckbam b is declared to be the Governor of this Commonwca tb Tbe next thing luurt needed was f100000 of the pea pies money appropriated to bangs une man and damn a whole party and the Democrats of this county wy publicly we endorse this think it wise conservatism and to the peoples interest Proceeding in that remarkable ca reer Beckham ordered that 3 100000 of the peoples money be given him that he might raise and equip a large blooding armyto guard the office n- piratelto protect tbe fficial revolutionists in setting a aide the verdict of the peopleand this the legislature a did And the Democracy of Ohio county come en masse before the very citizens who help pay these enor mouse expenditures and ceclare that is these things are a part of discreaiion and good sense commend ug them toIi to the intelligence of thia country as bits of wisdom conservatism and to tbe peoples interest lt king that 4 they be endorsed and give n positions his of trust fiver law abidin constitu tiundefeuding honest citizens Not eatid led with these enormous foolhardy appropriations of the leo be i p Aid ftbheyva pbclateatlda fioiilel tilling us that our election laws need modifying that they didnt work a planned and that Itwas necessary fur tho expenditure of about an other 100000 in payment for an election lawto be framed by the same body ol men that refused to abide by the voice of the people expressed under the law Accordingly this proclamation was promptly put into effect and as a result a law very little better was given the people after 11it ye Ix days labor Though amazingly strange the Democracy en mass as sembledvjted this to be deeds ofwis dom conservatism and to the peoples interest going to the people asking them if they didnt think them to be about to get right in this course by entering a plea of innocence and demurring to the peoples right to govern themselves To reasonably intelligent man these endorsements would seem to be aplenty for any organization to de fend while asking the people to give them political preference bnt our friends the enemy have more gall than the Dutchmans calf When they commence to endorse there appears to be no stopping place Any old thing done by any other old thing calling himself a Democrat is worthy of endorsement consequently they endorsed it Why they even endorse a man who as an official pleads for competition in gambling the distraction of monopoly in that vice and when this man as an official pardons a notorious charac ter gambler and fiend these fel owsthe Democratic bosses come commending these things to tho pee ple as acts of a Statesman being composed ofwisdom conservatism and peoples interest All these things did the Demeocratio convention do Now we do not believe that the Democrats of this county approve these things We do not attribute to any others than the hoses for when this clause of the platform was read not one word of applause- was spoken but deathly silence instead Every citizen should ask himself what is commendable tbe Beckham administration s it wiso to lavish money on admitted confessed perjurers Is it conservatism appropriate funds to raise and maintain a large State standing arm Is it to the peoples interest to pardon all the criminate in he penitentiary Whether you agree with us pditically kind reader you forced to answer the questions in the affirmative when you are on the draw bridge of the Ohio county Democratic platform There la no alternative it is to believe and damned in Novemberor disbe lieve and your party will damn you The good people of Ohio county have repudiated this same party before and they will repudiate it again regard less of the character who teaches these political fallacies TODAY closes the first spring term the Hartland College It goes without contradiction that this has been best termss work in the history the old Institution More live energetic ambitious working students in attendance than seer before and more accurate and satisfactory work is being accomplished both by students and teachers than at anytime formerly So great has been tbe increase during the last year that anew and more commodious building badly needed and the demand is most imperative Nothing more beneficial could be Molded to the progress of the town thau a genuine firstclaas eat of learning which our worthy servants are so rapidly estab lishing They need the hip and eu coura ement 01 the citizens of the town and tbe young ladies and gentlemen searching for an education Ihroughoul Western Kentucky There is no reason why Hartford should not be a popular educational center STIIANOK indeed that agrand jury should make its mission aJo aurprces from diflueing the news and happenings in this country ofI free speech but such is the case with Barren county grand jury and the Louisville Evening Pott Instead of attending to Jeflerain countys affairs the Barren citizeu should djjyote their attention to homo atlases The Poet a freethinker ands fluent speaker and because of this fact a Barren county grand jury seeks chastise it by finding an indictment against its editoru WE hcve learned tbat young Beck hams Hartford noise recently advised Excellency that his Excellency made a sad mistake in pardoning Ei Alvey had been marked by wisdom conservatism and to tho interestMRS CARIUE NATION seems to have abandoned her new profession to the delight of the Sunflower State Had ehe directed her energies and abilities in a more persuasive man- n ner to preaching she would doubtless have had better results at any rate she would not have been the laughing stock of tbe world WREN being urged to make tbe race for County Attorney one of the leading liwyers at this bar stated that 10M L Heavrin was invincible that it was only political suicide for the man opposing him This is a com monsense view of tbe matter We heartily agree with our friend and we believe there are others who will concur with the above statement WE note that the Democratic zoos ter still refuses to scratch dirt in the eyes of the tread of the ticket in tho Herald The fact of the matter is this that proud old cock has not been accustomed to scratching dirt iu tbe eyes of Pppulists and it will doubtless give him theache when he tries it- Tnn South African war is not a compromise by any means The Boers are yet sanguine that fate will deal kindly with them in the end hence they maintain their war fur in dependence claiming that they will be able to holdout three years longer A OOOD Democrat was asked the oth er day why their emblem did not ap pear over the ticket in tboeraUwhen he replied that the old bird had absolutely refused to disgrace himself by crowing in the barn yard under the present circumstances WHEN a great politician and states man has finished his mission on earth and is called from tbe walks of life all parties are then ready to join in eulogizing his name So it is with ex President Harrison IT is generally conceded that Mr Wade tbe Democratic would bo Jail er will have to wade long and deep before
