The factory Is a quaint structure situated In a disused quarry and ronlt i rot A number of shanties similar In appearance tq navvies huts The approach to it Is through some til the most beautiful sylvan scenery that Yorkshire can boast and the first indication that one has of Its proximity Is the presence ol companies Of bluebottles and a pun gent odor that somewhat staggers the nostrils at the first onslaught Around the neighborhood of the quarry at Intervals are placed pieces of flesh which attract th bluebottles from far and near and quaythem find where they usually spend the remainder of their days dinin like gourmands and laying their eggs The floor of the quarry Is lIt tered with the carcasses of dead horses diseased cattle that have had to be slaughtered and fish The first shanty one goes Into has the door covered with bags to prevent the bluebottles that have entered escaping On entering the- o ears are assailed by a noise compar able only 40 the whirr and bustle of a woolen factory The tempera ture is lute that of an oven The air Is literally black with thousands of bluebottles buzzing around and you have to shout to make yourself heard Here the first stage in the manufacture is carried on In tanks about S feet long by 3 feet broad and 2 feet deep are deposited carcasses in va rious stages of decay On these the bluebottles feed and blow their eggs and when these have developed sufficiently the tanks or baths are removed to the next shanty Here the maggots emerge from the eggs and begin to feed on the flesh They worm their way through it- t working with remarkable rapidity from the bottom to the top of the bath until they have reduced the carcass to the appearance of masses of string having extracted every ounce of nutriment from it Then fresh pieces of flesh are thrown In and the same process gone through again When the maggots have at tanned a certain stage in their development the tank Is removed to a third room and more flesh Is put In The odor in this place is so power ful that your eyes water violently and It tapes the visitor a minute or two to realize his whereabouts The odor Is caused by the fumes from the ammonia exuded by the maggots Here they reach their maximum development about half longtand then they are transferred to beds of sawdust through which they wriggle in that way cleaning themselves and at last fall through a sieve into a clean tank under neath They are now ready for the market and are packed in canisters and sent off to fish and tackle dealI ers and anglersIThe owner of the factory Is a man who was considered by the doctors as well advanced In con sumption but through working in the factory he has been completely cured Two or three of the work men wino were also consumptive have been cured and all the men about the place though the work IF somewhat disagreeable are in the best of health Medical experts have visited the place and they attribute the won derful cures that have been wrought to the quality of the ammonia made by the maggots In their judgmen I r i f r It la the purest ammonia obtalna ble Its curative powers are remark able and If It could bo produced Insufficient quantities its value would be almost incalculable Some time ago the Bradford l Town Council discussed the advlsa l blllty of purchasing the factory and turning It Into a sanitarium for consumptives but the proposal fell through owing to local opposition Tit Bits- ANOTIl1lt e MAMMOTH CAVE IX KASTKUX KHXTlOKl 3PerhapsII Sergent Ky Aug one of the most wonderful caves I InII the worldthe Mammoth Cave appointed to report on the condition of the tobacco crop at the close of each month which report has Just been taken and will be read with Interest by those concerned as there has been much comment on the crop since the heavy rains The report Is given by four rep resentatives from each Magisterial District In each county that composes the association The report shows the crop to be In much worse condition In some localities than others especially In the creek bottoms where tile land was overflowed but all report very serious damage for want of cultiva tion as well as too much water The report shows that about 110 per cent of a normal crop was planted The estimate of what was entirely lost runs from 10 to 35 per cent and a general average of the condition of what was left as glvlen shows at the close of the month about 63 per cent of a crop While It Is Impossible yet to de termine just what will be the out come of the crop most every one Interested either In buying or sell fug Is guessing as to the future results The condition In some re spects Is rather unprecedented the early planting buttoning very low with a hard stalk leaf narrow with very little spread while the late planting Is more promising- We want to thank the farmers who have sent in this report and ask them when they receive their card at the close of next month to till It out as accurately as possible Very
