of horscstaallng It was while in pursuit of Lockhart that Dawson lost his life and Dell was wounded The officers followed him across the Ohio river Into Spen cer county and coming on him In a lonely country road engaged In a Jt revolver fight- Daweon was the gamest man I ever saw said Lockhart speaking of the tragedy He followed me nnd when his round of cartridges had been used he started to beat me with the butteiTd of his revolver I shot him and he fell face down ward Lockhart was wounded In the left leg by one of the policemen and fled without stopping to have the Injury dressed The first two days Lockhart walked forty miles on the Ar Injured leg He then went to Belle yule III where he sold his revol ver and front there he went to St LouisLockhart has a long prison rec ord He has twice been sentenced to the State prison for grand lar ceny He Is also wanted in the southern part of the State It Is said for taking stolen goods Into the county A reward of 600 was i offered by the city of Owensboro Ky for his capture The arrest of Levl Lockhart was brought about by a letter sent here- byV Lockhart last week and Intended to be forwarded to Ella Campbell his sweetheart at Rockport Ind The letter to the woman was a pas sionate one and also expressed his contempt for Indiana officers and boasted at the manner In which he i eluded posses Blackburns identity as Lockhart a miner formerly of Princeton and who had served a term from there for larceny and la ter from Boonvllle for robbery andI r that lie had been paroled aid had f t violated his parole was established by Chief of Police Dan Haley of Princeton Ind few days after the murder June 1 near Rockport 1 f and since then Haley Gibson Sheriff Skelton of Gibson county Pits on Agent Larmore and other offi cers have been working constantly on the case Lockhart Is believed to have spent the Monday night af t ter tlig murder in Princeton with his brothers and then to have gone I West Owensboro Chief Busy Owensboro Ky June 16 Levi Lockhart alias George Black burn who was arrested In St Louis and hurried to Indianapolis Is Iwanted on the charge ot murderl and horsesteallng In addition to his parole from the Mich fviolatingff Ind penitentiary to iiwhIclt place he tfas sent on a grand charge Lockhart was ac cused of having stolen a horse In RI j Spencer county Ind two weeks ago and bringing H to Owensboro and selling It He was followed to Spencer county by Officers J C Dawson and James Bell of the Owensboro police force The om cers came unexpectedly upon Lock hart at a bend In the road and he pulled two automatic pIstols and v began firing Dawson was shot six times and died Instantly Bell was badly wounded Lockhart escaped and made his way to St Louis where he was tracked by one of the Indiana penitentiary officers Chief of Ponce G F Reynolds left Owensboro today for IndIanap- olis and will request that Lockhart bo turned over tothe Spencer coun ty Ind officers at Rockport Ind which Is only Bath county last week beginning h Monday and ending Friday- A twenty minutes drive southward over a good turnpike roada from Olympia a station on the Chesapeake Ohio Railroad through a region laden with the odor of the pine brings the traveler o these famous Springs There nestling In a beautiful valley of some six hundred acres I surrounded by lofty hills covered with primeval giant growth of pine and oak seven distinct mineral springs pour out their lifegiving lealthrenewlng waters As early as 1805 we find In the oM Kentucky Gazette a notice that Aaron Burr then probably deep In his scheme of western em lire with Blennerhassett was en route to this charming spot A few years later Henry Clay be came Interested In these Springs and there every summer for many 1 rears found rest recuperation and I ioclal pleasure in its quiet sur roundings and meditated upon such perplexing problems of State as the Missouri Compromise and other no less difficult questions of state raft which he solved with consummate ability There Is a tall elm tree standing to the large shady grove near the electrical power house of thett Springs which has a rather interesting history It Is called the HenI y Clay Elm and the legend goes that Mr Clay then principal ownerI of the premises used to enjoy many games of quiet draw with friends under Its wide spreading branches It Is related that on one I believe It is within reason to say said Senator Hitchcock at the conclusion of a speech he made on the subject that a careful exami nation of the profits from all classes of privileged wealth In the UnlteTl States would reveal that the pro tected Industries of this country exact from the people over and above a fair profit approximately a thous and millions of dollars a year The fact that these industries have a monopoly granted them through thisIbtUtled with figures taken from authenticIstatements The Steel Trust alone gets 300 000000 annually in excess of a fair profit This monopoly does an an nual business of three thousand million dollars and It Is admitted that without the tariff on steel that trust would have to sell Its products at ten per cent less than It now charges and ten per cent of three thousand millions is three hundred millions Every man woman and child of the ninetytwo millions In this country then pays an annual tribute of 350 to the Steel Trust over and above
