Titanic Is sinking The message came via the cable ship Mlnla off Cape Race It said that the steamers towing the Titanic were endeavoring to get Into shoal water near Cape Race for the purpose of beaching her Wireless dispatches up to noon today showed that rho passengers of tho monster Whlto Star Liner Titanic which struck an Iceburg off the XewTounaiand coast laut night were being transferred aboard the steamer Carpathia a Cunarder which left New York April 13 for NaplesAnother liner the Parisian of the Allan Company which sailed from Glasgow for Halifax on April C is already close at hand and as sisting In the work of rescue The Baltic and Virginian also are near the scene and the Olympic apparently Is near at hand as the wireless information concerning the transfer comes from Capt Had dock of the Olympic The first news of the accident was received by the wireless opera tor at Cape Race It said Have struck an Iceberg Wo are badly damaged Rush aid I IWithin half hour the Virginian of the Allan line had been com municated with and her captain was headed directly to the scene Shortly afterward the VirginianI r sent the following p her local r agents Titanic says she is badly damaged as result of striking an ice j berg She demands immediate assistance and we are rushing to her i help From time to time other wireless l advices were received In each it was stated the Titanic was still In touch and It was not until 1227 that the Virginian reported she had lost the Titanic A wireless message from the Ti tanic received shortly after mid i theigiant Jfcerg off the banks of Newfoundland and was in a sinking condition Transfer of the passengers to the I l lifeboats began at once The accl dent occurred at 1025 oclock last I night Two hours later the ships wireless doe not forbid giving them away i9- ew CAPTAIN ALEX ROWAN MET DEATH ON RIVER Went to Watery Grave in a Strange AccidentWell- Known Here Captain Alex H Rowan forty seven years of age and one of the best known river men of this sec tion of Green river was drowned at 11 oclock Saturday morning about two and onehalf miles above Liv ermore near Jamestown His body was recovered about 2 oclock In the afternoon Captain Rowan was the owner of the gasoline towboat Jolly Tom and at the time of his death was engaged In a raft of logs taping down to the Cooperage company at Livermore The raft was ahead of the boat which was go Ing down the river The tow drift ed against the bank and struck some trees that hung out over the water and Captain Rowan stepped from the boat onto the raft for the purpose of pushing It out Into the river He stepped between two logs such a manner that he was un Iin to extricate his foot and the was carried down under the t boat with him on top of 1 It crushing and TlrbWnlifg him between the raft and the bottom of the boat An account of the accident was telephoned to Livermore and an other boat was sent out at once The little boat was pulled off the raft and tho body of Captain Row an was recovered and taken to his home in Owensboro For a number of years Captain Rowan had engaged in the towing business up and down Green river and was a very popular man Sev eral years ago he was landlord of the Commercial Hotel In Hartford and was well known here He Is survived by a wife and two child ren Miss Annie Laura Rowan sixteen years of age and Tanner Rowan twertvone vears of age TWQ sisters Mrs Maude Peay of Little Rock Ark and Mrs Julia Ather ton of Nuckols and one brother AIL Louis Rowan of Livermore also survive him He was n mem ber of the Livermore within an hour of the reported Illness of Gen eral Grant eldest son of the eight eenth President and himself Com mander of the Department of the EastMrs Grant telephoned the clerks deskGet a physician quick The General is dying- It was first reported he had strangled but later the doctors its a statement said it was heart dis ease He had been suffering from dlabestes and attendant digestive disturbances His heart stopped instantly He was born May 30 1850 and was with his father through sever al of the civil war campaigns La ter he went to West Point He re signed In 1881 and in 1888 was made minister to Austria He re entered till army In the Spanish American war and reached the grade of MaJorGeneraTln 1906 He married Ida M Honore of Chicago In 1874 From 1894 to 1899 he served as Police Commissioner of Now York City Another Robbery nt Mnceo Another robbery has been com mitted at Maceo being the third within the past four months Sometime during Thursday night the barbershop and restaurant con ducted by R Goode was entered nd the burglars secured 25 in money It is not thought anything else was taken The front door to the building was pried open and the cash drawer in which the money was kept was demolished- It was only a short time ago that burglars entered the store of the Maceo Mercantile Company and secured about 75 in money by blow ing open the safe with dynamite II ASSESSMENTS INCREASED 137000000 And Debt of the State Will be Wiped Out as Result of j This Action Kentuckys indebtedness will be wiped out In the next three years and the burden of taxation lifted from the people as a result of the action of the State Board of Valua tion and Assessment Friday in increasing more than 13 1000 000 the assessment on franchises of the railroads of the State The State will receive In taxes nearly 700 000 more than was received last year from this one source and when the board completes the assessment of nIl public utility corpora tions IIt1 I sbellevcd that these cor porations will pay to the State a to tal of nearly one million dollars more than they paid last year One result of the action of the board Friday will be to do away with anj necessity for ations In the figures announced to day but from its final action there Is no appeal At the rate of tlfty cents on the 100 this Increased assessment will produce to the State the sum of approximately 685000 and since it Is not likely that there will be a decrease to any appreciable extent during the subsequent three years of this administration or for that matter at any time beyond the life of Philadelphia Taft gets seven of the twelve national delegates Woodrow Wilson Is at the head of a practically solid delegation UDDEN DEATH OF SIRS isf SMITH AT HARTFORD People of Hartford were Inex pressibly shocked lust Wednesday Horning upon the announcement that Mrs T J Smith had suddenly expired at her residence here She had gone out into the yard to at tend to her poultry when she was suddenly stricken with an attack- f acute Indigestion She was assisted Into liar house by members of the family and Drs Riley and Wedding hastily summoned but she began sinking fast About half in hour later she expired but was onsclous to the last She realized the end was at hand and spoke tenderly to her family of her depar ture No better woman ever lived and loved and died In Hartford than Mrs T J Smith It was hers to enjoy the love and highest re ipect of alii who knew her Mrs Nancy Ellen Smith was the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Norris and was 62 years four nonths and one day old at the time- f her death She was born and eared In Davies county Ky She olned the Baptist church atWhites rUle Ky In 1877 under the past 1 f torate of Rev Arnold and in 1882 moved her membership to the Hart ford Daptlst church and was ever a faithful Christian and loyal to her church and its institutions- On February 211878 Mrs Smith was married to Col T J Smith who survives her To this union were born six children Three of these died in Infancy and the fol lowing daughters are living Mrs Jesse Thomas Render and Mrs Mrs Mary T Bennett of Lhwton Okla and Miss Wlllye A Smith at home She also Greenville at 6 oclock Wednesday after noon He had been In feeble health for some time and his death was not unexpectedJudge Johnson had resided in Greenville for nearly 20 years mov ing there from Calhoun He was 78 years of age and his long life had been full of activity During the Civil War he was a Colonel In the Confederate army and as a lawyer and jurist he has been widely known He was a
