Washington, Feb. 25. Col. Theodore Roosevelt's announcement for the Presidency has split tho Republican party beyond all hope of mending before tho election in November next. Not since Quay, Piatt nnd other strong Republican leaders sought to slaughter PreBldent Harrison when he sought ronomlnatlon In 1892 and did pave the way for his defeat after renomlmftlon, has the Republican p"arty been so divided. But It is generally known here that most all Kentucky Representatives feel that they are peculiarly entitled to go to Baltimore as delegates. They say that the House, bolng the only natural political branch In control of Democrats, Is largely responsible, by reason of Its sensible and efficient record, for the happy condition of things In Democracy. This fact is generally admitted, (hey say. They contend or most, of them do that Piesident Taft Is cei tain to be renominated, which will make the tariff a vital I sue in the next campaign. All tariff measures must originate lu the House, and Its members therefore are the bettor fitted for service as National Convention delegates. "The House took what was left of the Democratic party after 190S," said one of the Kcntuckv Democrats "and nursed It carefully and well.
