WATTERSON Declares the Veteran Jour nalist Told Him Money Makes Presidents JOV WILSON REMAINS SILENT New York Jan 27Suggestlon- sf by Henry Watterson that he solicit a contribution to the Woodrow Wil son campaign fund from Thomas F Ryan were met with declarations by William F McCombs Gov Wilsons campaign manager that Mr Ryans money could not be accepted as such contributions were not within the spirit of the Woodrow Wilson campaign Mr McCombs declared in a statement made public hero to night His statement follows- I have read the correspondence Interchanged between Col Wattor son and Senator Tillman which appeared in this mornings papers I had thought that Col Wattersons statement of several days ago Itself entirely disposed of tho alleged Incident I so stated In an interview a day or so afterwards- I have made no statement with reference to It since that time From the beginning of a campaign for Governor Wilson which I have man nged I have received all of tho con i tributions made to it I assume responsibility for themI and I know all their sources They have uniformly been made by peo tple who had no Interest except the consummation of the Idea which hej represents Not one of them Rebecca Baker and H Baker and Daviess GeorgeII 1000 damages alleged to 4 on account of the construction of an embankment causing their land to overflow The petition states that the plain tiffs are the owners of GO acres of land and the Bakers own two ad joining tracts that the defendants erected an embankment or dam along the south side of their land which Is 18 inches higher than the county road which completely ob tructed tho now of water from plaintiffs land causing a large body of water to accumulate and rendering five acres worthless for cultivating crops The plaintiffs state that Daviess county has per mitted and suffered the dam to be erected and to their damage of 500 The plaintiffs say that for five years they have been unable to cul tivate the five acres of land the rental value unexplained disap pearance after leaving Rockport Ky on January 14 started a quiet search through three States has been located through the St Louis V W C A The news that she had been found was given out just as Chief of Police Young announced he would begin an Investigation upon learning that tho young wom ans trunk had remained at the union station here since January IS IEvery effort was made by Miss lFords family to preserve secrecy In tho search and for that reason the police learned of her disappearance only through the newspapers She had visited Miss Polly Coleman at Rockport Ky and departed for Louisville presumably to return to the Western College for Women at Oxford 0 The first Intimation that she had not reached her supposed destina tion came from the college officials who tOraham of Grayson county and Identical with the socalled Niles bill tha passed the House last Friday passed the Senate at 415 oclock this after noon by a vote of 24 to 14 The real test of strength however was the rollcall on the substitute meas ure offered by Senator flute Huf faker of Louisville It losing by a vote of 22 to 16 Those who voted for the substi tute and later voted for the Gra ham measure were J R Catlett of Princeton and W F Welch of Estlll county The only Rcpubllcans who voted against tho Graham bill were J F Bosworth of Mlddlesboroand Commodore Holmnn of Morgantown Now that both the House and the Senate have passed a county unit extension bill It will borieceissary for one of the two Houses to con cur in tho measure passed by the other The Graham bill may be sent over to the House tomorrow for action upon It by that body later or the Senate may pass the Niles Mil already passed by the House If the latter course Is pursued Representative flea Niles of Henderson will of Ow onsboro Mr Tichenor became criti cally ill a weok previously of pneumonia and since that time his death had been momentarily expected Ho was sixtyseven years of age Mr Tlchenors wife died at the last week from his daughter Mrs Sudlo Barnett of Golden Col orado stating that Master James Earl Ellis the elghteenmonthsold child of Mr and Mrs Howard Ellis of that place was drowned in a pond that Mr Ellis had dug In the corner of his yard Mrs Ellis is tho daughter of Mr and Mrs R A Anderson and Mr Ellis Is the son of Mrs Mary E Ellis and are well remembered here In the letter Mrs Barnett said that the little fellow was out In the yard playing with his older brother Blanton while the father was away from home and the moth er engaged In the house When the family missed him they began searching When they found him her was dead and had been brought out of the pond by a neighboring boy A physician was hastily sum moned but all In vain It Is not known how he came to meet his death but It Is supposed he walked out on the Ice and fell Into a hole that Mr Ellis had chopped In the ice to get water for his stock The Denver Col Dally News gave an account of the sad affair accompanied by photographs of the little drowned baby and also of young 15yearold Stanley Musser a neighbor boy who was on the pccno a few minutes after the child was missed and recovered the body from the pond which was small and only three feet deep It Is quite remarkable that Mr Anderson has been married 43 years and this is only the second of his immediate family to die the first being the little
