EARNEST An Enterprise That Means Much for Hartford and This Vicinity ARK PREPARED FOIL BIG WORK Work is progressing nicely at the new oil well opening six miles 1east of Hartford and good results are anticipated Progress is heces sarlly slow at the beginning es 1t peclallyasthey have encpuntered a- very hard and flinty quality of limestone but the drill has gone down Sbout 200 feet and they are prepar ed to reach a depth of 2000 feet If necessary The last report we tad fromth well was that they were In a foBslllf erous limestone showing about the same Indications that the wells In the southeastern part of the State present There is no regulation nfepth at which oil may be found Usually there Is found a large body of limestone under which is devel oped a stratum of slate Immediately beneath the slate Is found 1 v the producing oil rock out of which large quantities of oil are drawn There are different grades of oil and it must be located before the grade or density is determined The density of the oilproducing sub- Stance or fluid regulates the price running all the way tram 50c to 3 per barrel Some single wells pro duce as much as a thousand barrels a day Sometimes the oil flows out strongly itselfcalled a gusher and sometimes It has to be pumped outIWhen a largely producing oil well is located pipe lines are laid y over hills and under rivers In a continuous line through which the- fit oil Is pumped to the big oil centers There are several lines now laid from the oil fields of Illinois and Indiana which carry the oil In a continuous stream to New York City Large pumping stations are located along the line the distance apart being regulated by the amount of force necessary to trans port the oil to a given point each pumping station being part of the long stream or line of oil There Is no sot period for the life of an oil well There are several in Ken tucky being worked now which were discovered and put In opera i tion before the Civil Wart The place now being worked by the West Kentucky Oil Company V near hero Is on a direct line be tween the famous oil fields of Can ada and Beaumont Texas Between these points oil has been discovered I In Immense quantities and there seems to be no reason why from all Indications that success should not be met with here It Is quite certain that If oil should be discovered In largely paying quantities ft will at once revive Hartford from a conservative plodding little village In to a small sized city It will bring people and enterprises hero In at rush and capital will seek a ready I investment 1No pains county jail awaiting sentence which will be passed upon her n6xt week by Judge Blrkhead when she wll1 then be taken to the penitentiary at Frankfort to begin serving ia term of from two to 21 years This was the verdict of the jury whtch was rBturnW lfit6 court 1f 1050 oclock this morning after deliberating on the case for severa hours as to the guilt or Innocence of the defendant who was charges with the murder of her soninlaw Amble Buck The trial of Mrs Lynch was be gun Wednesday afternoon and the case submitted to the jury shortly before G oclock Thursday after noon When the Jury first wen into the room to consider trio verdict a vote was taken as to her guilt and the jury stood 11 tor guilty and one for acquittal Final ly the one man agreed that she wais guilty and on a poll being taken as to her punishment they stood 11 for a life sentence and one for man slaughter No kind of an argument could convince the one Juro that Mrs Lynch should receive a life sentence artd he stated that he would remain In the jury room six teen years before ho would come over to the majority side It was then suggested that a sentence of voluntary manslaughter from two to 21 years was equlva Jent to a life sentence for Mrs Lynch and anther than to have a hung jury the eleven men who were for life imprisonment agreed to the verdict with the one juror who was for voluntary manslaugh ter x When they verdict ottbe jury was announced Mrs Lynch bar shedding tears but not until JcAlei Calhoun started with her to the jail did Cordelia Buck daughter of the prisoner and wife of the murdered man show any signs of grief or sorrow Her cries could be heart for some distance and this contln uod as the young widow and hoiI friends walked from the court house to the street Mrs Lynch was Indicted for kill- Ing her soninlaw Amble Buck and the evidence showed that the killing waswithoutkany provocaHor whatever The exact facts of the shooting were told by TCordello Buck at the examining trial and on the first trial afterira Lynch had been Indicted but he present trial the witness aware that she had testified falsely at the former trial because of a threat made against her by Courtland Buck that he would kill her It she testified otherwise I than she did It was known that Cordelia Duck remained with the family of Courtland Buck and not with Amble Bucks father as had been stated until
