as they can be made The men are worked eight hours a day six days a week and are able to make 100 a month above living ex penses On the average the miners make 5 a day the schedule belng 60 cents a ton for room work 70 cents In tenfoot entries and 80 cents In sevenfoot entries For the single minors the Government furnishes free barracks the men furnishing only their own bedding A mess Is provided where meals are given for a quar ter each Neat cottages are provided for the married miners at a rental of 10 a month As to the safety of the mine It pelf the Interior Department has sought to develop a model mine Adequate exits are arranged so that entombment Is considered Impossible all modern safety appliances have been Installed while a system of ventilation had been put In by which the air in tunnels 2000 feet underground is said to be kept al most as fresh as on the surface Notwithstanding the expense of operating a model mine the coal costs the Government only 160 a ton for mining The mine Is run during the cropgrowing season only four months a year and the engin eers of the Reclamation Service who are In charge declare that If the mine were operated the year round the cost of mining would be cut to 12C a ton So far the Government mining experiment has been free from most of the troubles generally Incident to mining No one has ever been kill ed or seriously Injured Jarvis lileasantvllle Norcross is in the Atlantic Coun ty Jail at this place awaiting the action of the Coroner He Is badly broken up over his fatal mistake According to Norcrosss state ment made to a Justice of the Peace at Minotola ho was standing behind some underbrush at the side of a road when ho heard a noise Not thinking that any other hunters were In the vicinity and believing that the sound came from a deer walking down the road Norcross says he raised his gun and fired one barrel of buckshot in the direction of the noise Before he could lower his gun there was a shriek and jumping
