WAVLAX1) ALEXANDER The sad news was passed around Hnrtford early Monday morning that Dr. Wayland Alexander was dead, having passed away a few hours before at his residence In East Hartford. Carcinoma of the liver Is the technical name of tho disease which carried him away. For many months ho had been in falling health, yet he took part In the teachers' institute held here Just a year ago. At tho last ho was In a helpless and pitiable condition, scarcely knowing anything or anybody and not beliii? able to lie down at all. Tho most careful nursing failed to revive his waning energies, nnd all his loving kindred could do was to watch and wait for tho end. It Is hard In a few brief sentences to chronicle tho career nnd death of a man like Dr. Alexander. As for his life. It could be-- made to fill a volume ami yet the half of the goodness and worth of It would not be told. A man of tho most lova-bl- o disposition, n and affectionate person could hardly come Into his presence without a thrill of admiration and respect. But It was In the schoolroom where the brilliancy of his Intellect and tho tenderness of his heart shone with tho best effect. Every student loved him. They couldn't help It. It was his to swav tlio student body with a personality that compelled obe- dlenco for the very love of It. No educator In this section of Kentucky ever had a wider Influence nor could claim a larger number of bright young men and women as the product of his schoolroom, passed out fully equipped for the trials and vicissitudes of life. Hundreds of these people now occupy prominent positions on life's stage and can trace their early and latest teaching to tho noble and tireless we now whoso death Professor of their lives mourn. The worth pays constant tribute to his mntcli-les- s genius. Dr. AleNander had taught at South Carrollton, Owensboro nnd other places, but It was In our own days of city. Ho was 72 years old at the time of his death and leaves n wife and daughter, Mrs. E. L. FIXE VEIN OK OIL FOUND NOT FAR FROM HARTFORD While drilling a well on the Hartford and Hardlnsburg road, about three miles from Barrett's Ferry , and a mile from Sulphur Spring-flno and Mr. E. F. Cook struck a strong vein of oil. Tho oil was was struck about IS feet below tbe surface and affords a constant flow. Mr. Cook brought a specimen of tho oil to town Saturday and exhibited it nt The Herald office and elsewhere. This is the third vein of oil that has been struck In this vicinity within a small radius In the last few years. There can be little doubt that there is oil In Ohio county and plenty of It. If It can only bo located. It constitutes a mass of hidden wealth that Is destined at an early day to be Immensely profitable to those who own tho land through whose rocks It courses. It only lies ready to be worked out and placed upon the market. Recent Investigations of prospectors give every assurance that It will not be long until oil well drills will be pounding In several sections of the county. Annual Colt Show uwl ISailioruc.
