NOT CATCHING Declares Conference of Doctors at Corbin FAIL TO LOCATE THE CAUSE For the Dread Disease Sev eral Cases Were Submit ted by Doctors AN INTERESTING DISCUSSION CorbIn Ky Aug 9At the close of a conference here today participated In by members of the State Board of Health superintend ents of the State asylums for the insane and nearly 100 physicians practicing in the mountain counties of Whitley Laurel Bell and Knox where pellagra is prevalent and after a public clinic at which pa tients suffering from the disease were exhibited and the history of their cases was given by the attend ing physicians ft statement was adopted by the members of the con ference declaring the cause of the disease to be unknown but caution ing the public against the use of diseased corn and recommending an Improvement of sanitary conditions of the homes of the people The physicians asserted that pellagra isnot communicable and said that cases should not be quarantined They asked the State Board of Health to gather full data of tho disease in Kentucky and requested physicians to report every case to the board with such facts as will tend to Increase knowledge of the malady The declaration was drafted by n committee appointed on motion of Dr J N McCormack secretary of the State Board of Health and com posed of Dr McCormack and the following Dr H V PennIngton London Dr T W Oardlnor Mad Isonvllle member of tho State Board of Charitable Institutions Dr M W Steele CorbIn Dr H S Keller Frankfort member of the State Board of Health Dr J G Foley Plnevllle and Dr F H Clark Lexington It was adopted without n dissenting vote Pellagra first made its appear ance in the southeastern counties of Kentucky about two years ago There are now about fifty clearly developed cases In Whltloy county and about one hundred cases In ad Joining counties There have been more than twenty deaths from pellagra In these counties since the dis ease got a foothold here In tho absence of any treatment approved by the text books and the schools the physicians of this section have been left to their own devices in fighting the disease At the conference today they gave de tailed accounts of numbers of cases and results obtained from different methods of treatment Men wo men and children In the different stages of pellagra were brought from the country around and tho members of tho assembly were giv en an opportunity of making exam inations of the symptons and ef fects of the dIseaseI dlsIeaseciated bodies hollow checks and parchmentlike sklnand the vacant listless stare of those who have been afflicted for a long time Manifesting itself at first by n redness and soreness of the wrists and fore arms not unlike sunburn gastrointestinal troublo soon develops the sufferer falls to assimilate his food the skin becomes dry and hard sometimes peeling off In sheets the patient becomes forget ful apathetic and dlspondent finally lapsing Into some form of dementia Insanity Is the result and not n cause of pellagra those who are familiar with the disease say Most of the patients suffering from pellagra in the asylums for the In sane of the State contracted the dis ease It is sold before their admis sion to the Institutions Physicians at the demonstration today showed their absolute assur ance that pellagra Is not contagious by rubbing their hands over the in flamed hands and arms of the vic timsDr J H Hendry of Gary first pave a history of pellagra In the United States and In Kentucky lifter which he presented a fully developed case In tbe person of one of his patients who had had the dlo ease six years Treatment with Iodine Dr Hendry said had allay ed the disease but bad not effected a cure or checked It permanently He gave a history of the case And lescrlbtion of its manifestations ja A good deal has been said about h i4 pellagra being a form of leprosy said Dr Hendry but It Is not anything like leprosy It has noth- Ing more to do with leprosy then typhoid fever has to do with tooth ache Dr Hendry said also that pellagra has no connection with or similarity to a certain form of loathsome blood disease as som have thought and that treatment along that line had either had no effect or had made the patient worse The public he said Is com ing to be more at case on the sub ject of the disease Dr F D Haston of Arjay gave his experience with pellagra which had inclined him to believe that bread syrup and other products made from impure corn or meal tend to Induce the disease Dr O P Nuckles of Straight Creek declared pellagra to be nervous affection He did not think it was caused beatlnA corn meal He gave a prescription he had used which he said held the symptons in abeyance though they usually re turnedDr E S Moss of Williamsburg Health Officer of WhItley county told of the development of1 pellagra In his county At first he saldthe cases were isolated no two cases occurring in the same family but now there are as many as four cas es In one family This Inclined him to believe the disease to be conta gious He said he had been appeal ed to to keep children suffering from pellagra out of school but under tho existing law he had no power to do so Dr L O Smith cf Williamsburg described the mental deterioration of victims he had observed hpr H L Willis superintendent of the Eastern Kentucky Asylum at Lexington said pellagra had first appeared thero In the summer of 190S There have been about ortyI four cases In the Lexington Asylum and four or five have died The physicians and officials of the Insti tution ho snldliave not been alarm ed put the public and to some ex tent the nurses and attendants have been fearful of contracting the disease I have never hollered pellagra to be contnelous he raid I have no definite conclusion as tits cause or cure It Is not a skin disease but a constitutional trouble The skin trouble Is simply a mani festationDr H Clarke of Lexington former superintendent of the East ern Kentucky Asylum for the In sane said that the malady was not observed In the State institutions until four years ago He was notable to account for the origin of tho disease All types of insanity accompany pellagra he said The skin eruption he said is the most distinctive characterization of th disease but Is of little Importance the more serious manifestations being the Impairment of the digestion stomatitis diarrhoea nervous exhaustion and mental confusion In the South Dr Clarke said more than half of the cases of pellagra are found In Insane asylums The diagnosis of the disease tis easy said Dr Tr GardIner of the State Board of Control We know nothing of Its pathology and little of Its treatment- Dr H P Sights superintendent of the Western Kentucky Asylum at Hopklnsville told of the devel opment of pellagra there since May 1909 He was unable to assign n cause There have been seven deaths from pellagra in the Hop klnsvllle Institution he said Nine deaths in Kentucky from- pellagra have may mirror tho great of men in a new light now much credence The bulk of the fragment Is concerned with a conversation betwee- Jesus and a chief priest which takes Jr place In the Temple of Jerusalem the episode of which Is of a dra made character being preserved al most complete according to the translatorsiIt Is preceded they say by the close of a speech of Jesus to His disciplesI exhortingI them to I avoid the example of ceftMnMang doers and warning them of the penalties which await the latter both In this world and the next What particular class Is refer red to In this passage is not clear Jesus who throughout the frag ment is called simply Tho Sav iour then takes His disciples with 7 Him inside tho temple to the place of purification by which tho author of the Gospel perhaps meant the Court of the Men of Israel though how far the use of this term Is le gitimate Is doubtful They are met by a chief priest who is also a Pharisee but whoso name Is uncertain The chief priest reproaches them Tor having neg lected to perform the necessary ceremonies of ablution and change of garments before entering the holy place and looking upon the sacred vessels- A short dialogue ensues In which Jesus asks the chief priest If q he is pure and ho answers re counting the different purificatory rites which he had himself observ ed To this Jesus delivers an elo quent and crushing reply contrast lug outward and Inward puritythe external bathing described by the Hebrew ritual with the Inward cleansing which He and his follow ers had received In the waters of eternal life Before the
