Mayo and the Eleventh District crowd, which defeated McCreary In his race with Beckham, are said to have been secured for Judge Reed, and the Purchase politicians regard his race for the nomination as won. There seems to be no doubt that a big change litis taken place In the situation since the last committee meeting, and It is believed McCreary alienated many of his big supporters by throwing his Influence on the! side of the senatorial primary. This support has gone to Becd. Judge Beed will not resign until after the primary anyway, but it Is probablo tho he will relinquish bench If ho Is nominated for Gov- State. ernor. Tho live wires In the First district organization Democratic are feeling pretty "chesty" over tho kind of politics they have been playing up to this time, and regardless of how far tlioy have been aided by fortuitous circumstances and how far they are ontltlod to credit for their ability to of those clrcnm-stnnco- s, tnko advantage tho situation In Kentucky at this momont naturally looks pretty good to the Democrats of the Gibraltar. In the lirst place they have boosted Ollie James up and made a vacancy In the lower House of Congress from this district to bo filled by some aspiring patriot, and they did this to the honor and glory of Olllo, thus giving them n grateful friend In the Senate, If Olllo becomes the Senator. No one down hero denies that It was due to the work of the First District folk that McCreary was forced Into supporting the senatorial primary, thus making it possible for Olllo James to enter the race. The act created a breach among supporters, IMcCreary's erstwhile which was widened through the efforts of interested politicians. It Is bolieved in tho Purchase that championing of the senatorial primary resulted In the loss of tho Eleventh District support to him. McCreary's apostasy to the primary alienated the support of tho Mayo crowd, who expected to put McCreary In the Governor's chair and name the Senator. It was after this becamo apparent that Owsley Stanley was mentioned for the nomination, and his period of consideration covered the time while his friends were sounding the Eleventh District party men. Stanley wouldn't do, so he decided that his duty Is to his District in Congress. Then the State was scoured for the proper man. Every district leader bethought him of some one in his section who could be made to servo; but Judge William Beed proved tho most available and best quallflod. Again the First District boys won out, and If Judge Beed Is successful, they will have a friend In tho Senato and a friend In the Governor's chair, nnd a new Congressman and a new Circuit Judge to elect. The influence which the voice of the Irrigation Congress will bring to bear In this undertaking is suggested by the fact that It was the Congress which first brought about, through Its agitation, the Roosevelt Reclamation Act in 1902. Later, at the Spokane Congress in 1909, the Congress adopted resolutions requesting that the Government a bond issue for the extension of the reclamation work, and thlB bond issue was authorized. This resolution read as follows: "Recognizing economic waste and menace to public health connected with our vast areas of swamp and overflow lands, wo request our representatives in the Federal Congress to take suitable action looking toward reclamation of such lands under a policy corresponding to that of the reclamation of arid lands by $50,-000,0ze as tho Orland in California, tho Klamath, Falls in Oregon, and those of the Piatt Valley in Wyoming and Nebraska. "Thero are vast areas of the most fertile land in the world, which, througout the South, will not probably bo brought under Immediate cultivation unless some comprehensive plan Is worked out by which the Government can assist," said Mr. Park, who has for many years been prominent in western irrigation. Frankly, I do It with reluctance. It is ill to talk of an 111 thing. But perhaps one American woman may help others to avoid the curse that fell upon her. If the husband of Mrs. Evelyn AV. McLean, latest owner of the diamond, Is wise he will settle the expensive litigation been Into which ho has already drawn by the stone's baneful Influence and thon cast It Into the bottom of the sea. The Immense blue diamond which was formerly the property of my husband, Lord Francis Hope, has cut a sinister trail down the centuries, a trail that Is red with blood and black with shame and wet with tears. Death and disaster have dogged the footsteps of the temporary owners of this malignant stone, for It Is a notable fact that It has never remained long In anyone's possession. I have wondered sometimes If the bane were laid upon It by the will of a Jealous Eastern god In revenge for his loss. Because the first positive bit of history relative to the diamond Is that it was stolen from India In the latter part of the Seventeenth century by one Andre Tavernler, a Frenchman and a subject of Louis XIV. To the Grand Monarch he took his And, bartering It for 2,500,000 francs and a barony. But the good merchant did not long enjoy his fortune. Within a year he was torn to pieces by wild docs on a hunting trip In Spain, and the diamond's work of destruction was begun. Incidentally I have read that when Louis purchased the gem it was still In the rough and weighed no less after the Amstordam Jewelers had worked at It, only C7 carats were left. After the French revolution, when it was bought by the grandfather of Lord Hope, it had been cut down to 44 carats, which is its present size. But L am going ahead too quickly. Madame de Montespan, the beautiful favorite of the great Louis, is the first woman on record to feol the baleful influence of the diamond. Coincedent with her acqulslon of it came the growing ascendency of her successful rival, Madame do Malnte-noThe latter, who is said to have depended on' charm of mind rather than of person, was wise enough or 112 14 n. thnn carats.
