ACCIDENTAL KILLING tt peculiarly sad accident resulted r1iea r1tmVl11e on Monday f night It seems that two boys cousins and devoted chums by the names of WhittingIof a hill They saw a rabbit go into I a bunch of bushes and grass Young Whittington ran to the upper side the thicket to watch for the game while young Shaw remained below In the dusk Whittington thought he saw his game and tiered He was most paralyzed when young Shaw fell screaming to the ground He went at once to his chums assistance and seeing that the charge of shot had entered Shaws chest and face at once summoned aid Shaw was taken to his iome but all that Dr Dorsey could do did not prevent the fatal outcome and he died that night I The boys were respectively of the age ot ten and fifteen yearsyoung Whittington being the elder Whittington Is almost crazed by the accident as he and Shaw were Inseparable companions Slaw was the son of Mr Sam l Shaw and Whittington was the son of Mr Alonzo Whittington The funeral of Shaw which occurred on Sun day July 4 1848 Col John Cunningham has the reputation of having a remarkably won derful energy and is constantly re ferred to as one of the oracles of his county He has a fine library of law books and keeps himself thoroughly posted on all up to date events He was present at the magnificent Fourth of July Celebration and shook hands with a very old lady sitting in a chair who was introduced to him as Mrs Boone There were thousands and thousands of people in gorgeous and in brilliant military array with a glit tering dressparade of soldiers and brass bands of music and floating flags anc long lines 01 tables groaning with their beautiful and many delici ous fruits land refreshments Col Cunningham says Major C F Burnam has made a mistake in his dates in his History of the First Boonesborough Celebration Col Cunningham was captain at that time land afterwards promoted to be colonel regiment He rode a very hand some new saddle for the first time on that day on his spirited Bertram racer a noted dasher He was very erect in his figure and the girls described him Ias having sparkling black eyes and also as a popular and graceful danc er He has beautiful embroidered giltifriends which he highly prizes as a souvenir of his popularity with the ladies Col Cunningham describes the fine costly dressing of the beautiful Ken tuck belles on that occasion He tells of the great cloud burst and flood which poured down In torrents just at the dinner hour when the tables were loaded and piled with fish bread cakes pies olu ham mutton crackers beef and many other delicious Kentucky viands The soldiers gave up their tents to the ladies which soon became flooded with water The next morning the soldiers spiked the bread old ham and cakes on their bayonets and at shoulder arms marched down to the river to their boats which carried them to Louisville Lexington Frankfort and other places The girls slipped and fell and rolled mud in their fine brocade silk dressesI but came up screaming anti laghing with their new silk bonnets all completely drenched sand spattered with mudOne of the tender romances of the occasion was brought about by one of the Fayette beauties Miss Auditt Rogers taking such good care of her bonnet that a handsome beau present took notice and said in his heart she will make a good wife and he sought an Introduction to her on the spot She afterwards became his wife The Hood lasted from Sunday until Thursday and the river rose out of its banks We stayed with a party of girls find boys at Mt Stephen Eu banks all that time said Col Cunning ham My ladies were not exposed to the weather as they had retired to- Ih the home of Mr Holly before the rain After two hours of the storm the sun came out and the ladies were wading around in the mud and water when suddenly near night the rain burst forth in torrents again Col Cunningham says it was estimated that there must have been ten thousand people in that great assembly Miss Moore Miss Harrison the belles of Clark county and many beauties from old Madison were there for miles around and from over the State Col Cunningham remembered Ma jor I T Estill of Fort Estill as Lexington and Richmond society cir dies This was her happy hunting ground around dear old Sulphur Well where the handsome and brilliant equestrian gathered in their plumage at dawn to seebright Aurora with her rosy fingers unlock the golden portals of the east and throw her flood of liv- Ing light upon this gay and gladsome old Boonesborough And at sunset often they came In brilliant array with- of Hon Caleb Powers charged with the murder of Senator Goebel that court met at Georgetown on Monday with Special I Judge James S Morris presiding A numtfer of preliminary motions were acted upon and these being dis posed of Judge Morris ordered the sheriff to summon 200 jurors from Harrison county and especially order ed him not to make any discrimina tion in summoning these jurors stat 1ing at the same time that if he found such disgraceful illegal conduct he would at once discharge the panel of his own motion What a contrast with the actions of the judges who have presided here toforeA
