Breckinridge son of the Congress- ¬ man from this district and Mr Dalt Arnold of this city in which the for- ¬ mer formed a better opinion of Dalts flptic attainments than he had before It seems from Dalts own account which is corroborated by others who attended the ball and witnessed the cpnclusion of the affair that Dalt requested young Breckinridge to divide a dance with him and that the latter refused in a manner which Ar-¬ nold resented and he sought out Breckinridge after the dance was over and told him that his action was an insult and he demanded an apolo- ¬ gy This Breckinridge refused to give whereupon Arnold told him that he was a cowardly cur Breckinridge then accused Arnold of applying to him a vile epithet and he demanded an apology Dalt de nied the charge and of course refused to apologize for an offense which he Breckinridge had not committed then said You are a Q d liar when Arnold struck him They wero separated and left the ball room Breckinridgq was accompanied by about twenty of his friends Arnold with but one The latter disclaimed any wish to quarrel and said he would apologize for any wrong he had done if Breckinridge would do likewise but stdutly denied having applied the epithet as charged Breckinridge would not be pacified and as soon as his friends released him he rushed at Arnold and struck him twice before the latter seemed to realize what was up Then he went to work His first blow struck Breck ¬ inridge in the mouth and drew blood and the next two closed both eyes and knocked him down and ho was pretty badly whipped He had to be taken home by his friends but said I wont fight you with my fists any more but we will meet with pistols Notwithstanding this it is believed no Airther trouble will ensue Dalt didnt show a scratoh from the scrap ¬ ¬ j and finally caused his death He ral- lied in a measure from tho first attack and was able to sit up and even rode out at times bub it has been evident for several weeks past to those nearest him that in Washington D 0 the question of the value of carbonate of ammonia as a leavening agent in bread or as used in baking powders came up for discussion in which Prof Barker of the University of Pennsylvania and President of the Society Dr Rich- ¬ ardson late of tho United States De- ¬ partment of Agriculture in Washing ¬ ton Dr Wm McMurbrie late Prof of Chemistry in the University of Illinois Dr E H Bartley late Chemist of the Brooklyn N Y Board of Health and Prof of Ohemir try 01 tne Long lsianu uouege urn others took part The consensus of opinion was overwhelming in favor of the employ- ¬ ment of ammonia It was stated as a fact that ammonia rendered the gluten of the flour more soluble than the original gluten and that the bread in whioh this action was produced by carbonate of ammonia must be more digestible and hence more heathful and because of the extreme volatility of carbonate of ammonia and its complete expulsion from the bread in the process of bak- ¬ ing it is one of the most useful most healthful and most valuable loaven ing agents known These conclusions are borne out by the very elaborate and exhaustive experiments made by Prof J W Mallet of tho University of Virginia which show conclusively that bread made with a baking powder in which one percent of cabonate of ammonia is used in connection with cream of tarter and soda is not only of uni- ¬ formly better color and texture but a product more wholesome because the ammonia serves to neutralize any organic or lactic acids present in tho flour o ¬ ¬ IITTIDEIIFtlES Special Announcement Dr
