Byrd Misrepresents Us Floyd Byrd one of the prose cutions attorneys in the Jett White trial at Oynthiana last week said that Ewen the star witness against the accused and whose testimony had been brought in question byanum ber of Powell county men had a better reputation than any man who testified against him The TIMES dont believe in slandering unwilling witnesses who are forced to testify in a case ssimply be cause it is to the benefit of the opposite side to do so and it should not be tolerated This is what Mr Byrd tried to do at Oyn thiana last week The Powell county witnesses nrenlbhonorablo men 03911 possess lig a stainless Character and when Mr Byrd asserted to the contrary he passed an insult to the whole county which will be remembered by Powellites for days to come The witnesses from this county testified to words of truth and twothirds of the number were strangers to Mr Byrd who knew absolutely noth ing against a one pf them In this particular the noted attar ney exhibited a spirit of little ness and the same is indignantly resented by our people More False Reports We learn from the daily press that a feud was broken out in Powell county by the killing at Stanton last week This is un wholesome news to our people butthey must bear if Powell is classed as a mountain county and must bear her part of the burden if a justifiable killing occurs on ly once in ten years Nothing is further from truth than the above statement and it only tends to prove further that half the mat ter in thedailies are either false or highly coloredrTile Stanton homicide seems to have been wholly justifiable and no feudal nature whatover at tended The victim was a resi dent of Morgan county and the slayer was a deputy sheriff of this county The enmity for the offi cer was created while the latter was performing his official duty so the difference was not even a personal affair Would Raise a Protest If there should be an attempt made to lew a tax to build a bridge across Ked river or to pike a few miles of our miserable roads there would be a determined protest and howl going up t from the peopleof Clay City and Powell county Yet these slime peoplenevofstty a word when a medicine show or soihe other kin game conies along occasionally and takes avay a few thousand dollars of ourhard earned money leaving nothing jn return Consistency in fiiis particular is lacking There has beeji enough money I vastefully spent on unedifying etertainments Clay City dur ing the past two months to build an iron bridge across Red river instead of that our money js gone and we have nothing in rep rturn i Gone pie Hunting L McOarty the Republican nominee for Superintendent of Public Instruction issh wnup in quite an ombarassiiiK position The ballot stubs of the Democratic prim lryd his county this spring show that Mr McOarty voted in the primary there by pledging his support to the Democratic nominees Perhaps Mr McOarty is run ning for the office from abusi ness point of view and still clings to his democracy The writer once knew a Demo cratic paper edited and puplish ed by a Republican who said it was purely a business matter that he published the kind of a paper that was in demand and one that would yield him an in come He saidthat hjs business did not in the least interfere with his sacredftpolitical wibWs On Saturdaysjup tillmidnight and on all pulilic days the side walk in froiiteprt the saloon is blocked alitiost like a circus crowd and often onorhas telbow his way through when ho passes this route It Is quite embarassing to ladies to
