Beattyville Telephone Company which holds the franchise privileges for operating a telephone exchange in Clay City the right to charge 24 per year for phones in busi ness houses instead of 21 as stip ulated in the original agreement If tho Beatty villu Company could not comply with that part of the franchise and did not doso within Ute allotted time which soon expires the Council could then ad vertise and sell a new fcaiicliise and if the Beattyville Company could not fill their part of the agreement some other company could have done so perhaps or ave fttrnished the same service for say 22 or 28 which would have been better than 24 At least another company should have been given an equal show ing to furnish the same service for less money especallyso when theraro home peoplp wlio would perhaps ask that other lines now entering the city be removed Crops sow be laid by and other rush work with the farmers will soon be over Then it will be an opportune time for the road surveyors to get in sonic work on the poor and needy county roads By all means let us put them in better condition than they were left last fall to take the winter Such dreadful experience with bad roads as we had last winter was never under gone before in our memory While it is impossible to got n better system of roadworking this year we should make the very best of the antiquated sys tem now in force and have the best roads possible under such unfavorable circumstances Powell county has aroud ma chine which seemsto do firstclass work in properly grading the roads and when it can be used it should not
