purpose of selecting delegates and instructing for a candidate for Congress Mr W D Jackson call ed the body together and stated the purpose of the meeting Billie Bow en was elected temporary chairman and Charlie F Spencer was elected secretary A resolution was passed indorsing the work pf Congressman J B White and instructing for his nomination again This resolution was unanimously carried Jr D At appropriate words withdrew his name from the convention This came as a great surprise to nUos he entered the contest with itiore instructed votes than any other cjndidate seeking Congressional honors at this con ventions hands Mr White said in his course he thought he could beat any ono man but he didnt think he could beat a combination of three and it looked that way The other nominations were sec oned by brief speeches and the balloting began The first hallo resulted 44 for Hopkins 42 for Davisand 38 for Lawson On the second ballot the vote stood the same as the first On the third ballot Iat+ sons strength went to Hopkins and the vote stood ODtoUl in favor of Hopkins when his nom ination wits made by acclamation MrHopkins was loudly called for and he appeared and delivered hh speech
