LEXINGTON Brief View of the Pretty Little City and Peep at Her New Court House Running Procllvlte of Sonic of Her Citizens Demon Ye editor had occasion to nuke a brief visit to the pretty of the Bluegrass Saturday and notwith standing the fact that we only lAd a few hours to we had the plea ure of seeing a number of relatives and friends and take a peep at the new court house Much has been setting forth the beauty and of this building but no pic ture of it has been overdrawn in the least We have seen many fine public buildings but the one completed at Lexington is beyond all doubt the handsomest best constructed and most handsomely furnished we ever saw Each official has sepenite ap partments which are fitted with hand somest furniture carpets lights and in fact every convenience money could provide Every cent of the 255000 to have been used to the best and the citizens of Fayette are to be congratulated upon the use to which it was put The street car service is much bet ter than before There was plenty room for improvement and a few wrinkles could yet be pressed out The cars make faster time and are much cleaner yet it would not be a bad idea to require the strapping con ductors alight and assist ladies in and leaving We concluded they not do this because they were too bashful Our wife being here in Lancaster we stood at the opera house and watched the pretty girls come from the matinee and dear reader be lieve us when we say that sight oflov liness was one that would make any old rheumatic editor straighten up smooth back has matted hair and ad just his paper collar We heard a fel low say there were more girls to the square foot in Lexington than any place on earth we agree with him excepting Lancaster of course A striking feature of Lexington is her retail stores of them arc fully up to Louisville and Cincin tastily dressed and displayed as uptodate goods as the most could Occasionly I had cause to think of what Bill Nye said of his visit to Lex ington Bill said among other as Lexington is very industrious city can be seen running in all directions I used to run in all directions myself but now I dont touch liquor in any form Saturday night when I went to the C O to return home there just across the street I was told that Taylor had ordered the Lexington company to Frankfort had re to obey his commands and a ment A large squad of uniformed police some fifteen or twenty men in citizens clothes stood about nervously champing the bit waiting for the Everyone was on the qui vieve and expected to see the ar mory washed by blood when the troops arrived When the train came there sure enough sat a detail of twenty state guards in the smoker Then the that instead of the first report being true the po lice and sheriffs were to arrest Cabel Powers and Jno Davis who were with the Frankfort malitia and to escape the warrants charging them with complicity in murder A was made for the train and the writer who was awaiting to board that car was with the crowd and into the train One big red policeman grabbed us by the arm and wanted to know what we knew of Powers and Davis On being assured that we knew nothing of the case and cared a sight less he released his of steel and started for another fellow about our size heighth 5 ft 2 inches weight By this time the around the train numbered fully onethousand anxious men who stood with shoot and such was never heard of as those fleetfooted Lexing tonians made We have read of cat tie stampedes in the West but we never them the way those fellows at Lexington ran over one another to save their hides from perforation Each police man had a pistol while many of secondfiddlers or two Davis the commanding The soldiers 3 RECORD YJUB IN strated published careful entering corporal were still on the train when we left it in and may be going yet for all we know One of them told us he fell in when commanded to do so at Frankfort and had since been obeying orders and didnt know or care much where they were bound for But re seen such running as that done when the cry Fight rang out Baggage trucks hacks sidewalk signs all went with the push A negro waiter was making for the train with a tray of hot coffee and sandwiches Negro tray and coffee went through the air as if in a cyclone One fellow caught a cup of hot coffee on his head and the oaths he fired at that coon would do justice to any sailor Most of the arresting party appeared to be brave gentlemen but as is usually the case there were a few of the this and Igad that kind who were bent upon making the crowd moral life to a certain point there is imperative need AT ONCE higher or the toil and of the past are lost In almost every city there are found two elements the citizens One there is deserving but doing to bring to pass a clean city and a wholesome moral The other desires for of its own and usually puts into practice a government which if not wilfully viciousis at least inefficient The older citizens of Lancaster will remember the struggle which for years has been carried on here There was a period when the lawless almost entirely dominated all affairs political and moral was a frequent crime drunken rowdyism was so common as almost have lost its terrors saloons were not only countenanced and licensed but were handsomely supported But gradually the moral element grew The of desire formunicipal purity increased and the friends of reform felt that their hour had come They were not slow to seize the day the leadership of that noble Rev J C Prank the moral demanded and obtained the of the open saloons The saloon went but there came in its place that twin child of blind ti ger When the victory over the was won the temperance people at once disbanded their organization not so the whisky element From that day to this there has been a energetic determined preparing to bring back the old regime of liquor barrooms blood rowdyismOf way to do this was to render the local option law as in force so ineffective as to disgust many who had voted against the Then they quietly began to the suggestion that barrooms would be far better than blind the tigers cause as much disorder and bring in no revenue c c Of course they did not suggest one time the thought that all liquor revenue is BLOOD MONEY that same which abolished thesaloon could and should make a blind tiger an impossibility Did they that if the the saloon had caused drunkenness and menaced the with dangers so great as to arouse all moral public sentiment the blind tiger was creating for its a class of citizens who regard lying and perjury mate subterfuge of honor Not theyOur young men have been that the most indecent practices are legitimate is no crime if done in protecting a criminal and that even the churches of the town are legitimate places for disorder and mockery For years this has been in progress What man has lifted his or voice in protest But the crisis for this city has come There was more need for the righteous citizenship of this to arouse itself Let me point out to some reasons 1st There are SILENT but ACTIVE plans on foot to restore the OPEN SA LOON2nd A determined fight is being made to have the present city prohibiting the sale of liquors inoperative and 3rd To declare that there is now no local option law governing the city of Lancaster 4th The moral element is sick of blind tigers and their attendant evils and if that moral sentiment were crystalized about one purpose to de the tiger it certainly could be done 5th There is no choice here are evils as awful as both the blind tigers and the prospective open bar must be prohibited For these reasons and many others there ought at once to be a public law and order league to guard this danger and to preserve our honor J C MASSEE ww Mrs Calvin Zimmerman Mielsburg Pa says As a speedy cure for coughs colds croup and sore throat One Min ute Cough Cure is unequaled It is pleasant for children to take I heart ily WOOLSON SPICE I figure ever before recorded in a single week Yinciie3ter dealers doii think that last weeks large receipts will have much effect on the price of hemp as the news was discounted on the re port that the total amount of hemp in the islands at the opening of the ports was 200000 to 250000 bales Of this amount about 135000 bales have already reached the ports leaving somewhere from 65000 to 115000 bales to arrive This hemp which has been waiting will be rushed to the shipping ports but after that re ceipts will be light as the natives near Leyte Samar and other hemp centers are fighting instead of raising hemp It is predicted that hemp will not fall under ten cents per pound this year although some consumers declare they are confidently looking for sixcent hempChildren often
