what they are talking about say this will be the finest hotel they ever saw in a country As town It is undoubtedly the biggest the state Messrs Ryan the contract ors have had much trouble in getting material and consequently have been much delayed but the building will be ready for occupancy within the next six Meeks or two months The com pany has not yet rented the building to anyone though they have many applications They will exercise much caution in making the contract with a renter and use all precaution to keep out any renter who is not a hotel man and one who will endeavor to starve out his patrons Unless they do get a man who will feed they will soon find the building a white elephant as the traveling pub a lie will hunt a place where they can get good victuals well prepared Ken sent here last Wednesday one would have been lead to believe the Southern Railways ex tension was to be made through Gar rard for a certainty whether the rightofway was donated or not We have found some to believe this and to assure them right now most emphatically that the road will not be built here unless the ground is the company The Southern has made this survey and its officers say it is exactly what they want both in and in curvature Now they will not run another line nor enter tain any proposition whatever to go another route it Garrard comes up to her offer in the matter Garrard can and will unquestionably deliver the goods if the land owners are anything like reasonable in their demands As the money has to be made up by subscription of course we raise the amount necessary to pay unreasonable and disgustingly prices for the little strip of land running through a farm Our people ate perfectly willing to pay actual damages but when a man has the nerve to ask the price for his entire farm it is stretching the blanket just little toofar Any man with business ability can see that the building of this road here means many dollars in the pockets of every citizen of the county and if his is now so valuable that it will make it doubly so If those along tha line will only talk to parties over whom a road now runs they will learn that a railroad is not the disadvantage that some croaky are trying make them believe As tar as the commit tee has gone they have mot with replies from the land owners and some of them have seen so clearly the advantage it will be to them that they have donated the land We can not beleive that we have any citizens narrowminded that when by the committee they will try to gouge their neighbors of Garrard by asking fabulous prices We do not believe there is one in the county who so fond of a penny or so greedy and selfish as to try and stop this road and thus forever and eternally shut us out from the world of commerce and pro gross Of course the courts can be culled upon to condemn the land but RECOUD would dislike very much it to go out to the world that Gar a has within her borders a man that is so shortsighted and penny wise as to place an obstacle in the way the countys march to prosperity advancement Boyle and Lincoln counties are standing with open arms for this road and will not only give right of way but will come up any other request the rord may see proper to ask Now as we said at outset this road through Garrard depends upon the rightof way company has the survey they want it is as near perfect as it is pos sible to make a road in this country they want to strike the territory reached via this line and no other line will be run if Garrard conies to the front as she should an1 is able to do The survey will be corn pleted to Jellico within the next fifteen days and if this county stands ready to the goods work construction will be at once begun the distance from here to Burgin is short it will only be a short time until trains can be rune ing to this county Fellow citizens of Garrard now is the opportunity of your life If you let paS you may as well sit down and content yourself to always pay Satur days CourierJournal much in terest to Garrard county people at present The announcement that the South ern railway has determined to build an extension 115 miles long from Bur gin to Jellico is only one of many in dications of the industrial revival which though coming late to is coming at last This being an agricultural State not shared in the remarkable prosperity of the manufacturing sections which began as early as 1897 and the work of de eloping its resources has been almost suspended for years However both in Kentucky and in other parts of the South we see the movement has now been begun on a substantial basis Large purchases of timber and min eral lands are being reported every week and with this news there comes as might be expected evidence of rail road building The Southern railway is taking the initiative in the matter of constructing new lines although the Louisville and Nashville and the Illinois Central are each spending very large sums in betterments on their old tracks in this state Within a short time we shall doubtless hear of new roads projected making additions to mileage and opening up in new directions the vast mineral timber and agricultural resources of the State The mileage of Kentucky is far too small for a condition of high agricultural prosperity not to the development of our for which so many natural ad vantages are offered Millions of acres of fine farming lands are so remote from railway lines that thev can not send to market and instead of a surplus the farmers of that sectiion are content with making a bare living With new railroads to open up the markets these now regions would be regenerated The people of that part of the state through which the new Southern line is to pass are to be congratulated This city will be a large beneficiary Importantas this undertaking is how ever it is trifling in comparison to the general development of which this is only an incident but which is surely coming DEATH entered the home of ex United States Senator Blackburn night and struck Mrs Blackburn wife of the Senator Mrs Blackburn had been a great sufferer from heart disease for many months and had every attention that loving care could bestow but the case was very serious from the start There is no public man who has more friends in this county than Senator Blackburn and in his bereavement he has the sympathy of our
