our removal sale X E POINTS tiU7 lOGAN DRY GOODS CD M r- aIn STTLZJVG Circuit Court The August term of the Garrard Circuit Court convened Monday morn ing with his Honor Judge M C Sauf ley on the woolsack The grand jury was soon selected and Judge Saufley gave the charge He dwelt at length upon the duty of the jury in regard to inquiry into county officers their duty etc He said that while no suspicion whatever was entertained toward any one yet no honest man objected to his acts being investigated and the jury should make careful inquiry into each county office The work house being partly the property of the county the jury should look into its management The law requires prisoners be kept at hard labor and full days should be put in The work house keeper should work them the same as though he had them hired Individually The county is now in need of broken stone for the turnpikes and if these work house prisoners are made to do hard labor on the rock pile it will be a great help to the roads Judge Saufley then went on to tell the jury how sharp criminals sometimes succeded in their witnesses before the grand jury and making their cases appear not near so bad as they were shown at the examining trial Where such witnesses could be smuggled in it was possible for a criminal to succeed in convincing the grand jury there was nothing in the case and no indictment would be returned He read the law in regard to trusts pools etc as the law requires him to call especial attention to it He said the move ment on the insurance companies had been declared no good by the higher court and there was no violation of law by thorn under that section He said he would not talk over the list of crimes which como before all grand juries at each session such as illegal liquor soiling carrying pistols etc as these offenses were always in the courts and probably always would be He dwelt at length upon the idea some people have of getting road at a juryman for doing his duty and said that the friendship of a man who would hate a juryman his sworn duty was not worth having He said that many cases got into circuit court which rightfully ought to be tried in the police court and advised the jury to let the little mousetrack matters alone The police court can and ought to look after them The charge was pronounced by many to be the best ever given in dur court house and it only Narrow Europe The Stanford Journal gives the fol lowing account of the narrow escape from death by a Lancaster boy As freight train No 35 was laboring up the hill from Knob Lick Engineer Crosby saw after he had whistled for the crossing of the pike near E P Woods a man driving on the track immediately in fi ont of He shut off steam and reversed the engine but it was too late The horse was killed the vehicle wrecked and the man thrown high into he air alighting on a cattle guard The crew immediately went to the rescue and found the man alive but uneoncious He soon and said that he was Nat Boyle of Lancaster He was brought to town and Eugene Brown a cousin of Dr Brown knowing where he lived him to house He was then taken to the Infirmary and Drs Brown and set to work to see the ex tent of his injuries They say he iscut and gashed from to toot butstrange to say is not seriously hurt He says he was not knowlngthat was anywhere near railroad when the first thing he knew he was in the is that he never blows off half cocked When he makes a statement you may depend upon his having stu died the subject deeply We have been reading the Advocate ever since he took charge and have never seen it cast a chunck of mud at anyone no matter how sorry the fellow on the other side of the fence may have been The people appreciate journalism as managed by Mr Woolfolk as the big following of
