woolsack The grand jury was soon selected and Judge Saufley gave the charge He dwelt at length upon the duty of the jury in regard to inquiry into county officers their duty etc He said that while no suspicion whatever was entertained toward any one yet no honest man objected to his acts being investigated and the jury should make careful inquiry into each county office The work house being partly the property of the county the jury should look into its management The law requires prisoners be kept at hard labor and full days should be put in The work house keeper should work them the same as though he had them hired Individually The county is now in need of broken stone for the turnpikes and if these work house prisoners are made to do hard labor on the rock pile it will be a great help to the roads Judge Saufley then went on to tell the jury how sharp criminals sometimes succeded in their witnesses before the grand jury and making their cases appear not near so bad as they were shown at the examining trial Where such witnesses could be smuggled in it was possible for a criminal to succeed in convincing the grand jury there was nothing in the case and no indictment would be returned He read the law in regard to trusts pools etc as the law requires him to call especial attention to it He said the move ment on the insurance companies had been declared no good by the higher court and there was no violation of law by thorn under that section He said he would not talk over the list of crimes which como before all grand juries at each session such as illegal liquor soiling carrying pistols etc as these offenses were always in the courts and probably always would be He dwelt at length upon the idea some people have of getting road at a juryman for doing his duty and said that the friendship of a man who would hate a juryman his sworn duty was not worth having He said that many cases got into circuit court which rightfully ought to be tried in the police court and advised the jury to let the little mousetrack matters alone The police court can and ought to look after them The charge was pronounced by many to be the best ever given in dur court house and it only goes to bear out THE REC ORDS oftrepeated assertion that Micah C Saufley is one of the ablest judges and lawyers in the state of Kentucky He is no nogsetnck judge runninf off op tQtimtafr getting for doing eye ities and hairsplitting questions which only go to hamper justice and cost the taxpayers motley If Ken tucky had more M C Saufleys she would be far better oil The juries are made up as the idea of establishing a station of of the new Parmelee system of the Library This plan prac same as that in vogue in Chicago and other large cities that is a Central Library is divided up into sections or divisions and sent to different parts of the city In this case the central Library is the home otlice of the company and the stations are located in different towns in the state He has furnished the editor a catalogue of the Central Library It lists 1000 books and comprises we believe as complete and interesting a s t of books as we have never seen We have also looked into the standing of the company and find them O K They are incorporated for 50 030 over half of which is paid up Let from leading banks of Chicago and Des Moines report them as having fulfilled all their agreements for the 15 odd years that they have been in the library work The day has gone by when we need tell an intelligent people that we need a library this is granted The only questson now is how can one bese be established and maintained This is unquestionably Vie cheapest and most practicable system of supplying libraries that have ever seen The books are care fully selected by competent persons and the library is kept uptodate by supplying the latest and most popular books at no additional cost to the patrons If the station be established at this town of course arrangements must be made while Mr Wilhitt is here Leading citizens of neighbor ing towns are patronizing the Library liberally Pile Plln Why be bothered with this annoy ing complaint when Banner Salve will cure you 25c i So Long The darndest nuisance in Lancaster is the court house bell It is large enough for a city fire alarm and can be heard for miles in the country It is rung frequently half dozen times a day and while in operation its almost impossible to hear ones voice on the Square If a pig trots across the street some fellow proceeds to ring this bell and when a trial comes up Dave Ross rings from two to three hours by the watch People of a temperment believe that one hours continual ringing is suflicient to notify all concerned of the time and will be obliged if Dave will a little A Fine Show Cooper Cos oldfashioned one ring circus drew a big crowd to town Saturday At both performances the tent was crowded The show is one of the best on the road the performers being far above the average The Japs the educated horse Bernattu the clown the band and many other features were greatly enjoyed and applauded Mr Hennessy the man ager and MrOatman ringmasterare clever gentlemen and they permit nothing objectionable under their canvass The show is one which can be visited by the most refined people The best people of the town and county patronized the show In the afternoon the order was splendid but at night we regret to say the show A flat kneads I addressed exceedingly noel Cincinnati Compare nervous slowdown omen candidate t n people and audience were atthe money of a drunken contemptible mob These toughs yelled at performers annoyed the audience and indulged in conduct which was dis gusting in file extreme No officer ap peared to make any effort toward keeping order which fact does not speak well for our authorities Cooper Co paid enormous prices for every thing they got here and it looks pret ty bad that they should not ba protec ted from the annoyance and insults by a lot of drunken toughs Beside this the people who paid to attend the performance should be given How long are the people going to pay taxes and get no police TilE FAIR NEXT VEEK Rapidly Sliupliig up for the Lancaster Record is very over the prospect of theSouthern road passing Danville instead of perforating his own town Its this way Louis When the Southern railroad folks told the news editor of this Locality Saturday night about 830 oclock two young ladies at Mr E W Harris residence saw a flame shoot from the kitchen roof of the Hamilton Bo tel on Danville street They tele phoned quickly to Clay Hamilton who rushed up stairs and saw what to all seemed a fatal blaze The alarm was given and people flocked to the spot The fire caught from a defective chim ney or flue in the second story of the frame building and had eaten between the ceiling and roof Smoke poured from the raves and filled the entire building Everyone who saw it be lieved the house doomed and a hasty removal of furniture etc was corn menced The roof was cut into a big blaze extinguished and many left thinking the fire out Mr S C cashier of the National Bank thought otherwise and remained on the roof His belief was well founder for in less time than it takes to till it another blaze shot out and the came the hard fight Mr Dennys energy spurred up others and several soon climbed the ladders and passed buck ets to the gallant young banker who continued to dash the water until ev ery spark was extinguished a cistern is located directly back of the building for had it been nec essary to carry water any distance the building would have been consumed Had it burned the houses of Mr Book out Misses Tillett and II A B Marksbury would surely have gone too as they are only a few feet apart and with only buckets to fight with the saving of them would have been out of the question In addition to this Thompsons Jewelry store is only a few feet on the opposite side and as it has several unprotected windows the chances arc it too would have caught Had it done so the fire would have wiped out onefourth of the Public Square from Thompsons to and including the post office This sounds a little unreasonable but when it is remembered that we have nothing but buckets with which to fight fire and the only water being from a few private cisterns it can be readily seen that should one big building burn it would be impos sible to save adjoining property So general was the belief that all below on Danville street would burn thatwe folks along there packed our belongings had them ready to be moved out This miraculous escape ought to cast a wet blanket of the kickers who are erposed to water works With one hose turned into the Ham ilton building the fire would been in stantly drowned out much excitement prevented and Mrs Hamiltons furni ture saved from almost complete de molishment The building is damaged probably 100 twice presents smashed and his libra ry was scattered to the four winds The of gas Picketwire which flows for many miles through magnificent canyons Not one of the regiment returned or was ever heard of When nil hope had departed from the wives children and friends left behind at Trinidad infor mation was sent to Santa Fe and a wail was sent up through thin land The priests and people then called this stream EI Rio de las Animal the river of lost souls Years after when the Spanish power was weakened and French trappers came into the country under the auspices of the fur companies they adopted a more name they called the river Le Purgatoire Then came time American KINDNESS TO DRUMMERS They Are Told at an Iowa Station of the Towns Ho tel Capacity The average traveling man regards Grinnell la as the most desirable ter ritory on earth through which to carry a grip and sell his wares Citizens gen rally have a soft spot in their hearts for the genus drummer and do all they can to make his roaming life as pleas ant as possible The authorities of many of the towns are also interested in the comfort of their goodnatured visitors and in sonic of them laws have been provided to the end that the knights of the road may be protected against the disappointments so often met in a migratory existence One law that is particularly appreciated by tram clers is an ordinance already in opera tion in several cities and about to be tried in others It provides that the owners of the hotels in each town shall send to meet every incoming train censed runners whose duty it is to an nounce exactly what each hotel has at the time These are uniformed and are supposed to be of sturdy lung power and as soon as the train comes to a stop they cry out No room at the Jones Three but the bridal chambers vacant at the Waldorf Cots in the hall at the Little or some kindred an only wounded soldier of the late war who has reached New York and been supplied with an artificial leg was a member of the Astor battery says the New York Commercial Advertiser During the civil war 40000 men were deprived of limbs and in the recent war only 30 half of whom met with their losses either in camp or on war vessels not in action The manufacture of artificial limbs has been developed rapidly of late one firm nlone in this city has on its books the names of 70000 persons who have been or are to be supplied with artifi cial limbs The proprietor of one of the largest manufactories in this city said recent ly Wars have very little effect on our business The railroads are the great est destroyers of life and limb not ex cepting disease I find that 100000 per sons art killed or maimed yearly on the railroads of the United States alone principally employes a very small per centage being passengers Up to this time the manufacture of artificial limbs has been considered a local in dustry but so great a degree of perfec tion has been attained that New York manufacturers are shipping to all parts of the world Recent improvements are the rubber hand and foot The ductile fingers are made of Norway iron the most assume any position The improved foot has a spring mattress embodied in the rubber which gives it greater elas ticity durability and than those with articulated joints
