became discouraged until we saw in Fridays InteriorJournal where the Stanford city council had appropri ated 25 to send a committee to head quarters banquet the surveyors and do things up in style generally Now it is a settled fact that we cannot cope with such extravagant and lavish use of money Twentyfive dollars Just think of it We expected to meet with a hot fight from our clever neighbors bat such free use of coin takes the wind out of our sails City Council The regular August meeting of the Council was held Monday night The police judge reported fines and for feitures 85 Marshal Walker collected 8265 A number of small claims were allowed and ordered paid Dr Evans made application for permit to erect frame house on his lot and J I Hamilton to build a three story house 46 x 76 on the Alec Miller lot The Council decided that as these houses would come within the limit defined in the recent building ordinance they could not grant the permit Rice Benge was given per mit to erect a large stable on Totten avenue in Middleboroug The two ordinances referred to in this issue were introduced given one reading and will be passed before next The Record Appreciated Editor Louis Landram with the LANCASTER RECORD has accomplished more for the benefit of his town than any other man in Garrard county When he goes out after anything he never fails to bring it in There was the electric light changing of train schedules the construction of new stores opera house the Southern railway survey and now waterworks Much of the credit isdue Mr Landram for agitating the question that brought and will to completion these various enterprises Mt Vernon Sig nal Much obliged for the above Jim TIlE RECORD has done what it was its duty We only have a mossbacks left now but the high water is by far the best in Kentucky Curfew Rings at Danville The curfew law is now in effect at Danville and is being rigidly enforced Boys girls under 16 years of age will not be allowed on the streets after nine oclock at night during the sum mer and eight oclock during the win ter The court house bell will be rung fifteen minutes before the hour fixed for the children to be off the streets and when the warning bell is rung all children under the age limit must hurry home or the policeman gathers the urchins under his wing and takes them to the parents who pay a fine if satisfactory excuse is not forthcoming Danville people say the law is working great good Cattle Off The Street The Council adopted a good law Monday night when they took steps to keep the stock off thePublic Square and out of thebusiness houses Reg ular stock pens have been erected on Totten avenue and all stock must be driven there It is very unreasonable to ask that stock be allowed to stand on tfce Square all day and half the time on the pavements After coun ty court day the street and many pavements look like hog pens At all other towns the stock is taken to a regular place set apart for the purpose and those wanting to buy know where to go to find it When first adopted in other towns a howl is always sent up but when traders try it a while they are willing to go back to the old plan Some will kick but this can be expected in any enterprise or move ment for the towns betterment Jockey How Must Go One of the greatest nuisances the town has had to contend with is the court day Jockey Row The jock eys which means nothing mare nor less than bossswappers on certain streets on county court days and simply elevate hades all day long They get drunk shoot cuss and use all kinds of profane language People living on those streets are com pelled to close their front doors and windows and in some cases have left home At the council meeting night pne resident sent in a note threatening to have the town indicted by the grand jury for permitting a nuisance The ordinance introduced makes it a fineable offense to trade horses on any street of the town ex cept Totten avenue where the stock pens are located As this is only a short distance from the present stand the Jockeys will have no kick coming Water Work Contracts SIRed At the City Council meeting Mon day night the franchise was read a few minor details arranged and the documents signed sealed and This completes all the legal and all left to be done is a rati fication of the boards acts by a vote of the people in November The are beginning to see the painful need of water and it is safe to say the vote will be fifty to one in its favor There are a few erposed to it of course but the opposition is fast dwindling away The hustling push lug people want the water One of the lamest objections to the system is that the town is not large enough to afford it Of course its not large enough now but how do you suppose the town will ever grow if the people are not given protection from lire dust and disease There are ten thousand arguments in favor of the plant but we will not take space to argue it for any man who will give LocisvirrE Ivy Aug 0 The inle peiidcnt distiller of tic stati will hold u conference Tusday the Gait house iind will try to igrce upon a plan to limit the production of whibky the coming sa on About forty distillers lire expected to take part in the move menu The plan of the independent distillers is to figure out the curtail ment of production necessary to keep up prices and make trade brisk and to apportion this among themselves each di tiller to sign an agreement not to produce more than the quantity of whisky allotted to him When this is done a committee will be appointed to ascertain if the trust will agree with the independent distillers to limit the production of their plants The trust controls u little over half of the entire capacity of the state and it is not thought probable the officers of the company will consider any proposition from outsiders This makes doubtful the effectiveness of the movement as persons prominent in the combine have recently spoken of the plan of the independent distillers There is a disposition on the part of some of the latter to make war on the big concerns if it should refuse to limit production KILLED A CONSTABLE Jim JScltzrr Shut Itf a
