on the Alec Miller lot The Council decided that as these houses would come within the limit defined in the recent building ordinance they could not grant the permit Rice Benge was given per mit to erect a large stable on Totten avenue in Middleboroug The two ordinances referred to in this issue were introduced given one reading and will be passed before next The Record Appreciated Editor Louis water is by far the best in Kentucky Curfew Rings at Danville The curfew law is now in effect at Danville and is being rigidly enforced Boys girls under 16 years of age will not be allowed on the streets after nine oclock at night during the sum mer and eight oclock during the win ter The court house bell will be rung fifteen minutes before the hour fixed for the children to be off the streets and when the warning bell is rung all children under the age limit must hurry home or the policeman gathers the urchins under his wing and takes them to the parents who pay a fine if satisfactory excuse is not forthcoming Danville people say the law is working great good Cattle Off The Street The Council adopted a good law Monday night when they took steps to keep the stock off thePublic Square and out of thebusiness houses Reg ular stock pens have been erected on Totten avenue and all stock must be driven there It is very unreasonable to ask that stock be allowed to stand on tfce Square all day and half the time on the pavements After coun ty court day the street and many pavements look like hog pens At all other towns the stock is taken to a regular place set apart for the purpose and those wanting to buy know where to go to find it When first adopted in other towns a howl is always sent up but when traders try it a while they are willing to go back to the old plan Some will kick but this can be expected in any enterprise or move ment for the towns betterment Jockey How Must Go One of the greatest nuisances the town has had to contend with is the court day Jockey Row The jock eys which means nothing mare nor less than bossswappers on certain streets on county court days and simply elevate hades all day long They get drunk shoot cuss and use all kinds of profane language People living on those streets are com pelled to close their front doors and windows and in some cases have left home At the council meeting night pne resident sent in a note threatening to have the town indicted by the grand jury for permitting a nuisance The ordinance introduced makes it a fineable offense to trade horses on any street of the town ex cept Totten avenue where the stock pens are located As this is only a short distance from the present stand the Jockeys will have no kick coming Water Work Contracts SIRed At the City Council meeting Mon day night the franchise was read a few minor details arranged and the documents signed sealed and This completes all the legal and all left to be done is a rati fication of the boards acts by a vote of the people in November The are beginning to see the painful need of water and it is safe to say the vote will be fifty to one in its favor There are a few erposed to it of course but the opposition is fast dwindling away The hustling push lug people want the water One of the lamest objections to the system is that the town is not large enough to afford it Of course its not large enough now but how do you suppose the town will ever grow if the people are not given protection from lire dust and disease There are ten thousand arguments in favor of the plant but we will not take space to argue it for any man who will give learned of the death of Mrs W G Dunn which occurred at an early hour Saturday morning at the family residence near the Fork church Mrs Dunn had only been ill a day or so and was only considered in a danger ous condition for several hours the end came The physician the cause congestion of the brain The deceased belonged to one of the most widely connected families in the county and was a great favorite among all She was a good Christian woman an exemplary wife and a great church worker and had been prominently connected with the local charities for years to which she gave liberally of her time and means and her loss will be greatly felt by all with whom she was associated She leaves a heartbroken husband and three children to mourn her loss The deceased was 47 years old and of Pleasant our citizens are very proud Bob is what may be called aselfmade young man When quite a small boy he went to work in his fathers office as devil on the Lancaster News This was in 1885 He displayed a won J derful fondness for all branches of newspaper work and when the News was bought by Jas II Marls and TilE RECORD established he was immedi ately put to work as local editor and solicitor lie held this place until 1893 when he gave it up to accept a place as U S Ganger He held the latter position until 1897 at which time he resigned to accept a place as reporter on the Louisville Commer cial The Commercial people readily recognized his marked ability and six months later promoted him to city editor of that paper He has tilled the latter until the present time Mr Hughes is now visiting relatives in Lancaster and yesterday received i telegram from the Commercial man agers asking if he would accept the place of night editor a position honor and responsibility He has not decided whether he will accept place but will detirmine when he to the city Hr Hughes was married in 1892 to Miss Maggie oldest daughter of Col and Mrs Jno W Miller Bob is a boy entitled to credit for the
