We feel so thankful for the splendid impression and the eminent success made by the representatives of Lancaster Graded" School during the Tournament here last week, that we cannot rciIst the temptation to write you. We have heard many kind words concerning the pupils and their teachers. They came for something, labored hard, acquitted themselves well, and crowned Lancaster with glory. It was our. esteemed privilege to have Profs. Patterson and Postleas our guests. We rejoiced when Prof. Postle's services as a teacher were secured by the Trustees of your school, lie is certainly a good man for the position he occupies. We had nevei met Prof. Patterson before: had heard the Superintendent of our Graded School speak very favorably of him, and his qualifications as a teacher, and as a man of affairs read the many good things The Record has said of we expected him and his to see a man a scholar a christian, and our expectations were fully met. Quite a number of Somerset's leading citizens, as well as many visitors from the different schools, were heard to make such statements as the following: "I just like to look at Prof. Patterson, of Lancaster, did you ever see a man so enthusiastic for the success of his pupils," &c. If abolition of the canteen would stop drinking among the enlisted men, army ofllcers would be unanimous in favor of stopping the sale of drink at Government posts. The practical dilllculty is that the abolition of the canteen does not stop the sale of drinks. It drives the men to other places to drink. Drink ing beer under proper supervision in canteens may be a serious evil, but drinking whisky from bottles and at disreputable saloons near posts is a bigger nuisance from a military stand point. So far as the recent canteen law, it was unquestionably weak. It did not accomplish what it intended. v. great hurrah has A Washington dispatch to a New York paper says that a relative of Ad miral Dawey has assured the promoters of tho subscription that the Admiral will accept the proposed gift or a home.
